Personal History:
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
T'lar was always gifted physically, having a natural coordination remarkable
even for a Vulcan. Unfortunately, she had little patience for more mental
pursuits, disliking anything that kept her sitting still for long periods of
time. Considered a troublemaker by her Masters, she was disciplined often,
particularly for the fact that she resisted her pre-chosen vocation, to serve
in the diplomatic ranks of the Federation, using her powerful psi abilities to
some advantage in delicate negotiations. T'lar had heard of a powerful race of
empaths called the Betazoids who were recently discovered, and she realized
(far sooner than her teachers) that any hope of relying on her telepathy for a
free-ride into the prestigious diplomatic corps would be a waste of time.
Indeed, even when she petitioned the aid of Sarin tosiou Thrisanna (an old
advisor to her family and a powerful voice in the diplomatic corps,
particularly on Vulcan), her words fell on deaf ears. Sarin told her that her
future was as a messenger between the Federation and those with whom it might
be thrown into conflict, and that any deviation from this mission would meet
with a bad end. Sarin promised to find her a place in the diplomatic corps, to
take her under his wing. She soon realized that it was he who had originally
suggested that she should be steered into diplomacy, that he was, in effect,
railroading her life from the sidelines because of some mad obsession.
When she finally confronted him with this hypothesis, he agreed with her that
he was mad... madly in love. Note that T'lar, at this time, was merely a
quarter his age. He told her that he had been watching her for a long time, and
that it was their destiny to be married, his only logical justification being
that she needed guidance, and he needed a wife, a vulcan wife who felt emotions
as did he. T'lar, however, could not see her way into marrying the old man, who
she had seen more as a respected elder for so many years. Nor could she bring
herself to disgrace him by making the substance of their discussion known. So
she held the secret and petitioned to enter Star Fleet Academy on Vulcan, which
she had finally decided was her vocation, as it would (at least) take her away
from Vulcan and, hence, away from Sarin and her family.
Service History:
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
T'lar entered Star Fleet at the age of 18, attending the Vulcan Branch of the
SFA. Though less "logical" than most of her counter-parts at the Vulcan
Academy, she managed to steer her emotional energies toward Flight Training,
calculating the cost-benefit ratio of various dog-fighting tactics at her
disposal (as she was taught to do), and then figuring in the unquantifiable
heuristics of the situation, giving her just enough of an edge to beat out her
opponents at the simulator. So impressed were her superiors by her apparent
ability to "beat the odds" time and time again, and despite that fact that she
was noted as having a "problem with authority figures", T'lar was awarded the
rare opportunity to attend the Graduate Flight School on Terra after her
graduation from the Vulcan SFA.
As one of the few Vulcans admitted to the GFS, she was somewhat of an oddity.
Popular opinion held that Vulcans could not make exceptional flight officers
because they lacked the "killer instinct" that would enable them to come out
ahead in a dogfight. T'lar proved the theory wrong, not only showing her killer
instinct, but using her psi-talents to gather information about the strategies
employed by her fellow student. Further, her ability to quickly calculate the
odds of various tactics (something emphasized in the Vulcan Academy), gave her
a reputation as a walking computer. In short, she was considered the perfect
helmsman, at least from a raw-ability standpoint, and as such, she graduated at
the top of her class.
T'lar was positioned as a "Helm Chief Trainee" for her cadet cruise aboard the
USS Dominion. Although the position as Helm Chief In-Training posed numerous
difficulties from a personnel-relations stand-point, T'lar's unnerving
excellence at the helm station earned her the instant respect of those who
worked with her. At one point during the cruise, her skills proved to be of
particular merit, as the Dominion was meeting the USS Federation (the Star
Fleet flagship) in a simulated face-off. The Federation had recently been
upgraded, however, with the very latest in transwarp technology, allowing it to
pick and choose the moment of confrontation, and allowing it to optimize the
range of attack for its weapons/shields ratio. Being the "walking calculator",
T'lar noticed the opposition's strategy at once. While her superior, the real
Helm Chief, was unable to thwart the Federation's tactics, she saw an opening
in the way the Federation was perpetrating its string of victories. In short,
by optimizing its attacks, it was making itself predictable. T'lar, when
finally given the chance to sit at the helm controls, reported the Federation's
strategy to her Captain, as well as advising a method for defeating it. On the
very next attack, the Dominion toasted the Federation in short-order (until the
officers aboard the Federation realized what was going on, and then compensated
by entering in a degree of randomness at the cost of reduced efficiency). But
all in all, it was a very good day for the vulcan midshipman. She had become
the first person to defeat the USS Federation, Star Fleet's flagship.
Of course, her victory cast a small cloud of shame over her supervisor during
the remainder of her cruise, which brought about a whole host of interpersonal
difficulties to which she was unused. It was here more than anywhere else that
T'lar learned the importance of respecting human pride even at the expense of
truth and personal excellence. After her cadet cruise, she was given a choice.
She could either transfer to a capital ship and serve as an assistant helm
chief, or she could take a post aboard a smaller ship and be the helm chief.
Either way, she'd be promoted directly to 2nd Lieutenant, skipping the rank of
Ensign, but only via that latter route would she be assured of side-stepping
department head school.
T'lar opted for the side-step, feeling that she'd had more than enough
schooling for one lifetime. She was given the Dept. Head post aboard the USS
Columbia, a small scout ship operating under the colonial operations command.
The Columbia's job was to go around from planet to planet, updating previous
survey data and zooming in to study particular aspects/regions of especially
noteworthy worlds. It also checked-up on existing colonies, in some cases off-
loading critical supplies. This was the case in one peculiar incident, where
the colony in question, Alpha Mercury IV, was suffering from intense doses of
radiation being "pulsed" into the stellar wind by it's primary. The reason for
these disturbances were unknown, and there was talk of abandoning the colony.
T'lar was ordered to stay at her helm controls, ready to bolt in case of an
intense solar disturbance, however, when she lost contact with the landing
party due to a strong solar-magnetic flux, she decided to disobey her
instructions and make off with a heavily armored warp-shuttle to study the
phenomenon at close range. What she discovered was that a cloaked vessel was
dropping salvo's of antimatter into the star, intensifying fractures in the
"stellar skin" which in turn caused the solar phenomena to occur. T'lar managed
to evade capture and report the intruders, hence saving the colony from having
to be abandoned. However, her disregard for direct orders got her chewed out
even though everything turned out okay in the end, and while she was promoted
to full lieutenant, her next assignment was aboard a Loknar Class Frigate, the
USS Phobos, not exactly the fleet's premiere vessel). The Phobos currently
serves as a border crawler along the Romulan Neutral Zone, operating out of
it's home port, Albuquerque Station.
At this point (this point being the beginning of the campaign), it is important
to note that Lt. T'lar has an essentially flawless service record. While she
has not actually done anything worthy of decoration, she has performed her
duties with unequaled excellence from her very first days at the Academy. This
makes her a very rare officer, one who should be watched, nurtured, and given
an increasing level of command responsibilities.
Other Notes:
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
T'lar has a keen eye, with superior peripheral vision and an ability to see
minute details which few without mechanical enhancements can match. She is
lithe and lightning-quick and can throw a stahl (a javelin-like weapon used
mostly now in athletic games) or fire a phaser with the same pinpoint accuracy.
Her greatest weaknesses are her impatience and a dislike of authority that
makes her often question or even disregard orders in extreme cases. She tries
to maintain a Vulcan detachment, suppressing these impulses, but is often
unsuccessful (to her occasional shame).
