Service History:
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Jacob O'Neil studied medicine in San Francisco, where he ended up working as a
general practitioner at San Francisco Community Hospital. Living right next to
SFHQ, he became increasingly interested in Star Fleet and was encouraged to
enroll by Dr. Henry Banks, a colleague and friend who had served numerous
years. Jacob's then girlfriend, Janette Bratko, was entirely against the idea,
however, seeing Star Fleet as a threat to their relationship. Despite his
initial hesitation and Janette's stern sentiments to the contrary, Jacob did
enroll into the Star Fleet graduate program in xeno-biology which he graduated
from with honors two years later. Another year was spent on his cadet cruise
before he was finally assigned to the USS Annobon as a medic.
The Annobon's mission was to observe and aid colonies along the Klingon border
which were subject to raids from Gothmog ships on sporadic occasion.
Unfortunately, Jacob was caught in one such raid. He was dirtside performing
inoculations against a disease that was threatening the colonists while the
Annobon was called away on an emergency. Due to the seriousness of the disease,
Jacob was left behind, and the next day, a rogue Gothmog fleet attacked,
looking for provisions and for slaves.
When they realized that a Star Fleet medic was present, they abducted Jacob
along with some of the healthier colonists. He was promptly sold to a Klingon
mine administrator who was in charge of a labor camp and who sought additional
slaves beyond those appropriated through normal channels. Jacob became the
resident doctor, and for two months he tended to the sick, wounded and
overworked. The administrator quickly recognized his ability and forced him to
treat his Klingon troops when they invariably became ill from alien diseases or
hurt in petty in-fighting.
Of course, the Klingon's saved most of the medical supplies for their own
treatment, causing Jake to become increasingly frustrated with the lack of
supplies for the treatment of the slaves. He began stealing from the Klingon
holds whenever he found the opportunity, but was soon caught and severely
punished. Nonetheless, Jacob's devotion to the preservation of life was more
important to him than the pain which Klingons inflicted him with. He knew they
wouldn't kill him, as a Federation trained doctor in this territory was a rare
commodity. As a result, he continued stealing and was punished with numerable
injuries and was often denied food. His hatred of the Klingons grew, as did his
stubbornness.
One thing that did impress the Klingons, though, was his ability to use a
G'tanga, a weapon similar to a sword. Jacob had studied swordsmanship when he
was in college, and this knowledge was applicable to the G'tanga. By the end of
Jacob's stay in the camp, the Klingons had him fighting junior officers for
their entertainment. In his last battle, he was nearly killed. The game was
finally stopped by a senior official whom Jacob had treated for a potentially
fatal wound.
On the whole, Jacob's stay in the camp had a devastating effect on him,
emotionally. The horrible conditions and abuse were enough to try anyone's
sanity. Jacob, who was trained to save lives and was accustomed to doing so
with the aide of advanced medical technology, had a hard time dealing with
the terrible losses of life in the camp, losses he could have prevented with
just a few common items at the fingertips of any medical student. If not for
the example of one of the colonists, a vulcan female by the name of T'Pahr, he
might of lost his mind entirely. Her lack of emotion helped him to keep his own
in check, allowing him to continue working as best be could despite the
horrible conditions.
After the liberation of the slaves by a Federation Nova Squad, a highly
trained, special operations unit within Star Fleet, Jacob spent two months in a
Starbase hospital, being treated for malnutrition, disease, and wounds that had
not healed properly. This was followed by an extended leave of absence from
Star Fleet which he spent trying to recover emotionally from his imprisonment.
After around a year and a half, he rejoined Star Fleet and spent the next few
years practicing in San Francisco. He was later stationed at Mariner City on
Mars, establishing a reputation as top-notch surgeon. A particularly large dose
of recognition arrived on his doorstep after he successfully operated on Paul
Moontrail, a Canadian Metis Indian who also happened to be the Vice Secretary
General of the Terran United Nations. The operation came immediately following
a terrorist incident on Mars which left Moontrail's life was on the line, and
Jacob was in the right place at the right time to save it.
Partly because of this incident, Jacob was offered the position of Chief
Medical Officer aboard the newly built USS Excalibur. He initially declined,
plagued by memories of his last space mission. He much preferred the relative
safety of starbase duty. However, Henry Banks managed to convince him to
reverse his decision, noting that not only would the position be a godsend to
Jacob's career, but it would also put him back in the saddle in terms of his
own emotional well-being.
Medical Notes:
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Jacob's internment in the Klingon slave camp caused many injuries which, for
the most part, have healed. However, he still requires regular exercise and
visits to a chiropractor for back aches and stiffness in his joints.
