Family History:
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
As a child, K'tar was everything a Klingon father could ask for. He beat up his
peers, his betters, and on occasion, even total strangers. Starting fights for
no apparent reason was a way of life for him. However, as a child (and later as
an adult) his gleaming reputation for total fearlessness had one insurmountable
drawback. He was the son of a coward.
K'tar's father, one Kaalon eth Solazarn, had once been a Captain in the Klingon
Navy. He'd even married Kanach sutai-Umlarggt, an almost legendary woman who'd
miraculously worked her way to the position of Squadron Leader without any
family backing what-so-ever (and this despite the ever-present sex-
discrimination in the Klingon miliary). The marriage afforded both partners
increased respect, and Kaalon commanded a ship in his wife's squadron. However,
during a battle with the Kinshaya, he bailed, believing her dead. Indeed, she
almost did die. But when next they met, she challenged him to mortal combat and
killed him.
It is interesting to note that while Klingon society is not entirely masculine-
based, the military almost always is. It is believed that a warrior's soul is
derived from the collective souls of his male ancestors, and that his father's
is the most important in that equation. Hence, no matter what distinctions
Kanach had achieved, she could not pass along her personal honor to her son.
That, she knew, he'd have to earn himself. And with the shame of his father
upon his shoulders, it would be a difficult road for him. Perhaps even more
difficult than her's had been.
Service History:
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Kanach's deed led to a sudden state of feuding between the Umlarggt clan and
the much larger and more powerful Solazarn. K'tar was caught in the middle of
this fighting, not really knowing to which clan he belonged, and it was because
of this state of confusion that he refused to take part in various fights which
were offered him, either though innuendo or outright threat. He never ran from
a fight, per se, but he never eagerly accepted one either, and this gave him a
bad reputation at the Klingon Academy as a coward.
He was sent to work at a garbage scow for his cadet cruise. Not exactly the
most auspicious of beginnings for the son of a squadron commander. Several
members of the Solazarn clan decided to pay him a visit led by one Kereth kai-
Solazarn, infamous through the sector for his skill with the Kith, an ancient
Klingon polearm. After quickly finishing off one of K'tar's crewmates, the real
battle began. Kereth, in his bravery, wielded his Kith, while K'tar had only
the thin air.
As the battle began, K'tar was hopelessly outclassed and outweaponed. While
picking up a chair to defend himself, Kereth slashed K'tar vertically across
the neck. He held back, however, preferring to toy with his opponent, to force
him to break down and beg for mercy. It was to be his final mistake. He swung
again and approached with a fake whirling block which moved into a charge.
Seeing this tactic, K'tar waited for the last possible moment, and then much to
Kereth's dismay, blocked the blade with his forearm, effectively sacrificing
his right hand. He then brought his left hand to the Solazarn's throat,
maneuvered Kereth into a headlock, and ended up snapping his spine. Seeing
their master of the Kith felled by a man with no weapons, the two warriors who
had accompanied Kereth ran cowardly back to their ship. It was in this fashion,
that a bloody K'tar made his way back to the bridge of the scow, and hung the
head of Kereth as a personal trophy. His hand was reattached shortly thereafter
and continues to serve him to this day.
K'tar was finally respected, at least by a few officers, for his victory over
Kereth. His reward, however, was to serve aboard the IKS Deathsong, an old ship
with an even older captain. It was one of the "geritol" patrol, full of
Klingons who'd somehow managed to survive their long careers and now searched
for nothing other than an honorable battle-death before they died of old age.
Though meant as a mission to get rid of the young upstart, the assignment
proved quite valuable, and K'tar learned many a wicked trick from the oldsters
he served with.
It was to be a defining six months of his life, as when the crew wasn't looking
for trouble, they were in port, meeting with old acquaintances. One of these,
strangely enough, was a Vulcan Ambassador by the name of Sarin. Apparently
Sarin and the Deathsong's Captain went back a ways, and there was a certain
degree of mutual respect between the two. It was here that K'tar first heard of
an upcoming exchange program soon to be initiated between the Klingon Empire
and the Federation. The ports were abuzz with the news that a single lucky
Klingon would have the honor of upstaging the Federation on their own soil for
a special term of seven years, and a Federation cadet would be sent to the
Empire to be crushed under the rigorous Klingon Banath Base Training Corps.
This "student exchange" was the brainchild of peace activists lobbying under
Ambassador Sarin. K'tar realized that this would be a golden opportunity to
grab some glory for himself and petitioned Sarin personally with respect to the
matter.
Of course, the other members of his ship also wanted a crack at the Feds, so
Sarin proposed that they have it out with a human-devised competition of
strength and tactics. Thus, K'tar became the ship-champion of a game new to his
race, "Wrestling of Arms", which centered around pinning the opponent's arm to
a table. Though resplendent in his victory, K'tar didn't feel particularly
proud of himself, considering the average age of his shipmates.
Admiral K'gar at Banath Base wasn't particularly happy about the crew of the
Deathsong taking the liberty of selecting the exchange officer. He wanted this
exchange for completely different reasons than Ambassador Sarin; the one to be
selected would have to be a model Klingon, and would have to be able to keep
his wits about him so as to inconspicuously learn all he could about the
weapons, defenses, and tactics of the Federation. Also under consideration,
was: what Star Fleet officers could bribed, what political weakness inside the
Federation could be exploited, and which worlds would bring the highest rewards
when sacked and looted?
Admiral K'gar wanted an Intelligence Officer for the mission, however, it was
considered to be in bad form to overrule one's elders regardless of any
differences in rank. Hence, he tried to contact the Deathsong and politely get
them to reverse their decision, however, he was unable to contact them, and it
was assumed that they'd either nailed a large asteroid or the senile old fools
had gotten themselves lost.
K'tar's mother used her limited influence to make final the decision for this
position to rest with her son. She saw this as her son's opportunity to go
where she could not and bring glory to the Umlarggt name. However, moving to
Star Fleet Academy was a difficult duty for K'tar. He had grown up hearing of
the weakness in the Federation, how they "powdered their noses" before combat.
This assignment would be intolerable, he thought, even though it could bring
him great honor.
In his first few months in the Federation, K'tar was demerited three times and
forgiven twice (because "He just didn't understand"). The one demerit that
stuck with his record caused him to miss assignment on an Excelsior class ship
and instead end up on the "Grunt of Star Fleet", an old bucket known as the
Enforcer class. His cadet flight showed that K'tar was all business when it
came to his duty, however, it wasn't until he arrived on the Valiant that his
inability to handle personality conflicts became really apparent.
From the very first day he was treated with suspicion, and from that, personal
as well as professional attacks came at him from all quarters. He quickly
proved that in his technical ability, he was among the best, saving his ship
from death in combat in numerous simulation exercises as well as finding out
all he could about Federation combat capabilities.
One night during a discussion about modern tactics, the Adorov Sweep was
mentioned. It was a tactic that his great-grandfather had made famous, and was
a source of pride to the Solazarn clan. The tactic turned into a heated debate,
and when a lieutenant from Navigation made the jeering comment: "I don't
understand why you KLINGONS insist on the Adorov Sweep. Every time you use it,
we kick your BUTT!" Needless to say, before anyone could react, the hapless
lieutenant found himself on the deck with a broken nose.
The incident became just the last in a long string of black marks on K'tar's
record. Since the exchange program had only one more year to run, he was sent
back toward the frontier where he could catch a shuttle and make his way back
into Klingon Space (euphemistically) ahead of schedule. As it so happened,
Ambassador Sarin was rumored to be passing through Albuquerque Station, so he
decided to make a short stop-over on his way to the Federation-Klingon neutral
zone.
It was to be a fateful decision, as upon arriving at Albuquerque, he was
informed by Commodore Ash that his services would be required aboard the USS
Phobos, a Loknar Class Frigate. Never one to avoid duty, K'tar accepted the
assignment, even though he was not particularly impressed with either the craft
or its crew.
