  72.              CCXIX.  The Tale of Young Luke

  78.   Seated around the big bonfire along with a group of his
  79. contemporaries, young Luke was the center of attention.
  80. Though most of the other kids, including young Luke, had
  81. already told their stories, his was the favorite, and
  82. everyone knew it.  Besides, a bunch of recent arrivals
  83. had surely missed the first telling.  The other children
  84. (mostly fellow ten-year-olds) looked up at him with great
  85. anticipation.
  86.  
  87. little boy:  Tell it again!
  88. young Luke:  _Again_?
  89. little girl:  Yeah, again!  We wanna hear how it happened!
  90. other little girl:  We wanna hear everything.
  91.  
  92.   Young Luke sighed, and began the re-telling of his now-
  93. famous story...
  94.  
  95.   "It was a normal day...normal, that is, until the flying
  96. halfling came.  He just kinda sailed into town, shooting
  97. fire and lightning from his hands."
  98.  
  99.   Young Luke made erratic gestures with his own hands, as
  100. if to drive home his point through gesticulation.  Some of
  101. the younger kids recoiled at this.
  102.  
  103.   "Well, it wasn't too long before a bunch of buildings
  104. were burning, what with the fire-shooting part and all.
  105. Every time he shot lightning, people got roasted, and a
  106. biiiiiig hole got dug in the ground.  People were really
  107. worried, ya know?
  108.   Then..._they_ showed up.  The greatest heroes ever to
  109. walk the land.  I guess they had heard about the flying
  110. magical halfling or something, 'cause they were ready
  111. to fight him and save the day.  First thing they did
  112. was make a big sheet of ice, right on top of that flying
  113. halfling!"
  114.  
  115.   This drew whispers of awe from the assembled throng -
  116. real _magic_ had been used!
  117.  
  118.   "They musta surprised the little guy, 'cause after
  119. that big ice sheet popped into the air above him, he
  120. got knocked down to the ground.  Then the black elf
  121. made more magic - he covered the ice and the halfling
  122. with giant spiderwebs!  I didn't see any spiders,
  123. though, so he musta been a _real_ powerful wizard.
  124. Anyway, all that stuff didn't stop the halfling, not
  125. for long anyway.  He busted right outta there, covered
  126. with flames.  The fire must not have hurt him, though,
  127. since he was laughing.  He wasn't scared of the great
  128. heroes, nosiree - he snapped his fingers and zapped a
  129. bunch of our townspeople.  They got all bad, all of a
  130. sudden, and attacked the heroes!"
  131.  
  132.   The other children recoiled in shock at the mention
  133. of this vile deed.  Young Luke looked around, noticing
  134. how they were all hypnotized by his storytelling, and
  135. then went on.
  136.  
  137.   "I guess the heroes didn't want to hurt any of the
  138. people, 'cause the wild elf - we never did know his
  139. name, though some people made up their own names for
  140. him - made fire jump up from the town streets!  It
  141. covered the controlled people...no, didn't burn 'em,
  142. stupid, just kept 'em away from the heroes.
  143.   Then the mighty dwarf they called the Mongol lifted
  144. his thunder-hammer and threw it at that halfling!  The
  145. little guy was tough, though - the hammer bounced off
  146. of his head with a DING and came back to the Mongol's
  147. hands.  The halfling must have had a headache, 'cause
  148. boy was he mad after that.  He said some magic words
  149. or something, and the Mongol fell over, yelling.
  150.   About then was when the big black warrior shot his
  151. sling stone at the flying halfling.  Hit the little
  152. sucker in the belly, too, and everything exploded in
  153. snow!  We thought winter had come early that year!
  154. The halfling fell to the ground, frozen like a big
  155. snowball, but he busted out of that, too - shot ice
  156. and snow all around."
  157.  
  158.   Young Luke could see that some of his listeners were
  159. shivering now, as if the ice and snow had hit _them_,
  160. too.
  161.  
  162.   "Well, then the halfling started to fly away again.
  163. I guess the heroes wanted to catch him pretty bad -
  164. one of their wizards made a big bag of white flour fly
  165. after him.  It busted him upside the head, and he got
  166. knocked for a loop, and started coughing.  It was
  167. pretty funny."
  168.  
  169.   Young Luke began imitating what he had witnessed that
  170. day, coughing and hacking like crazy.  Most of the kids
  171. around him thought it was pretty funny, and laughed for
  172. a while.  A few of them were still scared, though, and
  173. obviously wanted to know what had happened after that.
  174.  
  175.   "Well, while the flour made a cloud in the air, the
  176. silver-haired elf - he was their leader, you know -
  177. was standing nearby, invisible.  That's right - no one
  178. could see him.  Not even the flying coughing halfling.
  179. So the elf jumped up and slapped the halfling.  That
  180. was pretty stupid, mainly since it made him not invisible
  181. any more, but also 'cause the halfling punched him and
  182. knocked him away like a fly.  The elf yelled at the
  183. Mongol, who threw his hammer again.  This time he hurt
  184. the halfling bad, which is what we thought only 'cause
  185. he spun 'round and 'round in the air, head over heels."
  186.  
  187.   The surrounding children just stared in awe.
  188.  
  189.   "The great heroes must have known that that was the
  190. time to strike!  Their priest, Rod, walked up like he
  191. was indestructible or something.  He pointed his finger
  192. at the halfling - the finger was glowing - and yelled
  193. some powerful magic words.  Whatever they were, the
  194. halfling didn't like ;em, 'cause that's when he really
  195. started screaming and spinning around in the air.  The
  196. whole time, the great priest Rod just stood there,
  197. pointing his finger and telling the halfling where to
  198. go.  Suddenly, the little guy's body fell to the street,
  199. and he seemed to be knocked out.  All the others walked
  200. up and looked at him, I guess to make sure he was dead.
  201. Some of the guys that walked up hadn't even done anything
  202. in the fight - they must have been historians or something
  203. like that.
  204.   Well, after the fight was over, everyone started fixing
  205. and cleaning.  The town elders wanted to cut off the
  206. halfling's head, but the heroes must have wanted it for
  207. themselves, 'cause they paid the town elders a lot of
  208. money to keep the head.  Soon after that, they rode on
  209. out of town, and took the halfling with 'em.  That was
  210. the last time - the first time, really - that we saw that
  211. band of mighty heroes!  Rod...the Mongol...all of 'em will
  212. always be remembered here in Targ.  They saved the day,
  213. 'cause that's what heroes go around doing."
  214.  
  215.   Satisfied with his story, and proud of himself for
  216. showing the other children that true meaning of bravery,
  217. nobility, and heroism, young Luke stood up.
  218.  
  219. young Luke:  And that's it.  I saw it with my own eyes,
  220.   way back on that very day, years ago.
  221. other children:  (whispering in awe)
  222.  
  223.   Thus it was that the young lads and lasses were inspired
  224. to try and be good, and grow up to be mighty heroes:  strong
  225. warriors, powerful wizards, and holy priests.  Young Luke
  226. had given them something to think about on this day.

  232. notes     :  This Friday (November 4, 1994) marks the 3-year
  233.   anniversary of the posting of episode #1.  Hard to believe
  234.   it's been that long...oh, by the way, the events recounted
  235.   in this episode originally happened in episode #78.
  236.     Hmm.  On a whim, I'm going to ask all of you readers to
  237.   do something for me.  I'm curious as to just how many of
  238.   you there are out there...I've made a brief survey and put
  239.   it below.  This way, I can get a feel for not only the
  240.   number of total readers, but other things as well.
  241.     PLEASE take a minute and mail your answers right back
  242.   to me.  Any one of these stories takes an hour, minimum,
  243.   for me to write.  I'm only asking you for a minute here.
