  94.   Four of the adventurers - Arnold, Rillen, Mongo, and
  95. Belphanior - have accompanied a select group of Arnold's
  96. tribespeople on a hunt.  As it turns out, though, this is
  97. more than a simple hunting trip; rather, the barbarians
  98. are planning to rid themselves of a huge predator, which
  99. has been devouring various animals and people of late.
  100.  
  101. Arnold:  (grinning)  I didn't wand to ruin the surbrise for
  102.   you.
  103. Mongo:  Well, we sure do appreciate it.  Well, more than
  104.   Ged would've, anyway.
  105. Belphanior:  I like surprises like this, myself.
  106. Sigfried:  (stares at the elf incredulously)
  107. Olaf:  (chuckles)
  108. Rillen:  (hefts his spear)  Enough talk.  Let's find the
  109.   damned thing.  (he thinks about how, exactly two years
  110.   ago today, he fought in the great martial arts contest)
  111.   Let's go.
  112. Songa:  Aye.  (she looks for, and finds, other tracks that
  113.   trail away to the north)  Tricky beast.
  114. Rillen:  How's that?
  115. Songa:  It stayed here for a time, perhaps days, then rose
  116.   and moved north.
  117. Mongo:  What do you mean, "rose up and moved north"?!?
  118.   What creature can go to sleep in the snow for days at a
  119.   time, and then just get up and walk away?!?
  120. Thurnock:  (looking to the mountains)  This is no common
  121.   creature we seek.
  122. Belphanior:  (muttering)  No shit...
  123. Songa:  Aye, come.
  124.  
  125.   Within an hour, they had entered the mountains, Songa
  126. leading the way.  She pointed out that the tracks were
  127. becoming fresher as the group went - a sure sign that the
  128. beast was nearby.
  129.  
  130. Mongo:  Hmm, maybe a magic item or two would have helped.
  131. Rillen:  Maybe you should have remained in the village.
  132. Mongo:  (scowls)
  133. Songa:  (admiring Rillen's resolve)
  134. Arnold:  It's a trabditional tribal cudstom - we always
  135.   hunt the great beadst with the same sagred weabons and
  136.   armdor.  (shrugs)  Thad's how it has to be.
  137. Mongo:  Hmph.  Tradition...
  138. Olaf:  Perhaps you wish to return?
  139. Sigfried:  Perhaps you are afraid?
  140. Mongo:  Nah.  I'm here, so I'll stay until this business
  141.   is over.
  142. Thurnock:  Hmph.  (he moves onward, and the others follow)
  143. Mongo:  (brings up the rear)
  144. Arnold:  (to Mongo)  Bad sign.
  145. Mongo:  Huh?
  146. Arnold:  I said, bad sign.  In their eyes, you have shown
  147.   yoursebf to be afraid.
  148. Mongo:  But I-
  149. Arnold:  Now you mudst _prove_ your courage, in baddle,
  150.   otherbwise they'll never respegt you again.
  151. Mongo:  (getting angry)  Prove?  Oh, I'll prove it, all
  152.   right!
  153. Olaf:  (to Belphanior, as the two march near the front of
  154.   the party)  Now, remember, these spears are different
  155.   from the swords you're used to.
  156. Belphanior:  Yeah, yeah, I know.
  157. Songa:  (hears something)  Eh?  (to everyone)  Shh!
  158. Thurnock:  (uses hand signals to the others, who begin to
  159.   spread out)
  160.  
  161.   Suddenly, a huge form burst from some nearby bushes and
  162. landed directly on Sigfried, knocking him over!  The thing
  163. was at least twelve feet in length, and resembled a gigantic
  164. tiger more than anything else.  However, the two incisors
  165. in its upper jaw were vastly oversized, perhaps eight inches
  166. long and as sharp as razors.  Also, a thick, white pelt
  167. covered the beast, powerful muscles rippling beneath the
  168. snowy fur.  The monster's shoulder stood fully six feet
  169. off the ground - truly it was a huge animal.
  170.   As Sigfried was crushed beneath the cat's weight, huge
  171. claws ripped at him, and blood sprayed everywhere.
  172.  
  173. Olaf:  Sigfried!
  174. Sigfried:  (already dead)
  175. beast:  RRAAARGH!
  176. Belphanior:  Crap, that thing's bigger than that tiger
  177.   Halbarad used to have...
  178. Mongo:  Cripes!  It got Sigfried!  (he charges the beast)
  179. Rillen:  (he hurls his spear, burying its head in the side
  180.   of the monster)  Hai!
  181. Songa:  (follows suit, but her spear makes a puny wound
  182.   before falling out of the creature)  Damn!
  183. beast:  (whirls and leaps with astounding speed, closing
  184.   its fangs around Olaf before the barbarian can react)
  185. Olaf:  Aaargh!
  186. beast:  GRRRARGH!  (it tosses the stout warrior like a rag
  187.   doll)  RAARGH!
  188. Olaf:  (lands nearby, blood pouring from his torn body)
  189. Belphanior:  Die!  (he charges forth, burying his spear
  190.   in the beast's side)  Yeah!
  191. beast:  GRAARGH!  (it slaps the elf with a paw, knocking
  192.   him away)
  193. Belphanior:  (manages to catch the brunt of the blow on
  194.   his shield, but it stunned nonetheless)  Argh!  (he lands
  195.   on the ground nearby)
  196. Thurnock:  (slashes the beast's rear with his spear, drawing
  197.   blood)  Ha!  For the tribe!
  198. beast:  GRAARGH!  (turns and charges the barbarian leader)
  199. Thurnock:  (stands fast, bracing his spear against a huge
  200.   boulder)  Come, sacred beast!
  201. Mongo:  (barrels into the beast, stabbing his spear through
  202.   one of its rear legs)  Yeah!  Take THAT!
  203. beast:  (roars in pain)  RAAARGH!  (it rakes the dwarf with
  204.   its good rear paw, sending his shield flying away)
  205. Mongo:  Uh-oh.  (he tries to pull his spear out, but the
  206.   beast tears the weapon out of his grip, and charges him)
  207. beast:  GRAAARGH!
  208. Mongo:  (looking around for cover)
  209. Arnold:  (leaps atop the monster's broad back, burying his
  210.   spear in its shoulder)  Ah-nold!
  211. beast:  RAARGH!  (it rolls over, smashing Arnold, and then
  212.   stands upright, half of Mongo's now-broken spear still in
  213.   its leg and Arnold's spear broken off in its back)
  214.   GRAAARGH!
  215. Arnold:  (bruised and bloody, he lies nearby)  Aaa...
  216. Thurnock:  (stands fast, his spear ready)  Come on, beast!
  217.  
  218.   Besides half of Mongo's broken spear, the monster was also
  219. carrying Rillen's, Belphanior's, and Arnold's spears in its
  220. body now.  Rillen and Songa stood to one side, both of them
  221. now weaponless; Belphanior, Mongo, and Thurnock were near
  222. the beast, on various flanks; Sigfried and Olaf lay dead,
  223. and Arnold lay very near the monster, though he still lived.
  224.  
  225. beast:  RAARGH!  (charges Thurnock)
  226. Mongo:  (charges after the beast)  I'm coming!
  227. Thurnock:  (awed at this display of bravery)  No-
  228. beast:  (though it tries to dodge the spear, the chieftan
  229.   is skillful, and the spear catches it in the shoulder)
  230.   RAAARGH!  (it bats Thurnock, ripping his shoulder open
  231.   and sending him sailing aside)  GRAAARGH!  (it whirls
  232.   around and tears into Mongo with the other claw)
  233. Mongo:  Wha-  Argh!  (he falls nearby, his arm broken and
  234.   his body torn in several places)  Urgh...
  235. beast:  GRR.  (leaps toward Songa)
  236. Songa:  (weaponless, she prepares to take on the beast
  237.   empty=handed anyway)  Aaa!
  238. Rillen:  No!  (having picked up the blunt end of Mongo's
  239.   broken spear, he leaps in front of the huntress, pushes
  240.   her aside, and hurls the spear haft, broken end first,
  241.   all in one fluid motion)  Hai!
  242. Songa:  (falls nearby)  Oof!
  243. Thurnock:  (laying on the ground, bleeding)  What speed...
  244. beast:  (the spear haft hits it right in the eye and imbeds
  245.   itself deeply)  RRAAAAARGH!!!  (it thrashes in pain)
  246. Songa:  You...it...
  247. Rillen:  It was nothing.  (he charges the monster)
  248. Belphanior:  (atop a nearby boulder, he holds the fallen
  249.   Olaf's spear and leaps)  Aaaaaaa!
  250. beast:  (stricken with pain, it whirls, but not in time)
  251. Belphanior:  (lands spear-first on the beast's back, and
  252.   buries the weapon in the monster's back)
  253. Rillen:  (deftly grabs the spearpoint from the thing's leg
  254.   and stabs it in the throat, covering himself with blood)
  255.   Die!  (he rips the monster's throat again)  Stick-
  256. beast:  GRAAARGH!  (it rakes the warrior with a hind claw,
  257.   tearing deep furrows in his clothing and body)
  258. Rillen:  Argh!  (he reels, and as his world goes black he
  259.   sees the beast's huge jaws opening)
  260.  
  261.   There was a light, almost painful, as Rillen opened his
  262. eyes.  He could make out hazy figures above him, but then
  263. he tried to sit up, and was wracked with terrible pain.
  264.  
  265. Rillen:  Aaargh!  (he slumps back down, and looks at the
  266.   thatched ceiling above him)  A hut?
  267. Mongo:  (one arm in a sling)  He's awake!
  268. Belphanior:  Well, it's about time!
  269. Rillen:  Where am I?
  270. Arnold:  Aaa.  (appears in the warrior's field of vision,
  271.   bandaged heavily like the others)  We're back in the
  272.   village again.
  273. Mongo:  Yeah.
  274. Rillen:  ...Village?
  275. Belphanior:  Yep.  You were badly wounded - barely alive.
  276.   We made double-time back here.
  277. Rillen:  The beast...?
  278. Mongo:  Dead.  It croaked shortly after you slashed its
  279.   head half-off.
  280. Rillen:  Oh.  And what of Songa?
  281. Arnold:  She's jubst fine.
  282. Mongo:  Hah.  She's been at your side for days now.  The
  283.   only reason she's not here now is 'cause she had to
  284.   sleep _sometime_.
  285. Belphanior:  I think she feels bad because you got hurt
  286.   while saving her life.
  287. Rillen:  Oh.
  288. Arnold:  As for Oldaf and Sigdfreeb, well...(shrugs)
  289. Mongo:  He's trying to say that we had to bury them.
  290. Belphanior:  Yeah.  They wouldn't let Ged try and bring
  291.   those guys back to life.
  292. Mongo:  It's against tribal customs.  Some god-related
  293.   thing.
  294. Arnold:  Yah.
  295. Rillen:  (thinking quickly)  So Thurnock lives?
  296. Belphanior:  Yeah, he was beaten up pretty bad - like the
  297.   rest of us - but he made it back.
  298. Mongo:  There's more.  While we were gone, Gorin and Bosco
  299.   managed to do some training.  Peldor's become quite a
  300.   trader, what with all his little trinkets and stuff in
  301.   his pockets.
  302. Belphanior:  And _I_ trained, too, in the ways of the rogue.
  303. Mongo:  And Ged...he even gained some measure of priestly
  304.   power, don't ask me how-
  305. Ged:  (strides into the hut)  Welcome back, pal!
  306. Rillen:  (waves weakly)  Hello.
  307. Ged:  With the help of Boccob, I fixed you and the others
  308.   up pretty good.
  309. Rillen:  My thanks.
  310. Songa:  (appears in the hut)  Aha!  (gestures to the door)
  311.   Everyone out!
  312. Mongo:  But-
  313. Arnold:  Aaa.
  314. Songa:  Out!  Now!  (she picks up Mongo and carries him to
  315.   the door)  All of you!
  316. everyone:  (leaves)
  317. Songa:  (slams the door)
  318. Rillen:  Ow.
  319. Songa:  You'd think they would show more respect.  This IS
  320.   my hut, after all.
  321. Rillen:  Oh.
  322. Songa:  (sits down beside the warrior)  That was a brave
  323.   thing you did in the battle.  I _can_ take care of myself,
  324.   you know.
  325. Rillen:  Weaponless fighting is best left-
  326. Songa:  Hush with that!  Anyway, since you may have saved
  327.   my life...(she scowls)...I have made it my personal duty
  328.   to make sure you heal up nicely.
  329. Rillen:  Well, I-
  330. Songa:  No more elven mummery and wizardly tricks for you,
  331.   my friend.  It's just you and me now.
  332. Rillen:  I...uh...
  333.  
  334.   Rillen rested for days, regaining his strength, and he
  335. had many private talks with Songa.  The adventurers opted
  336. to remain in the village for another week or so, and there
  337. was much feasting, both for the victory over the great
  338. beast and for the two dead warriors.  The beast's body
  339. parts had, as stated previously, myriad uses, though the
  340. heart was presented to Rillen, when he could walk about,
  341. two days later.
  342.  
  343. Rillen:  (looking at the shriveled heart)  I guess you
  344.   expect me to eat this now?
  345. Thurnock:  (laughs)  No, no!  It's not fresh and hot - no
  346.   magical power left!  Nay, it's simply a trophy.
  347. Songa:  Actually...(she produces a crude necklace, made
  348.   from a single thong looped through an eight-inch long
  349.   incisor)  I made this for you.  It's the beast's front
  350.   tooth, of course.
  351. Bosco:  ...!
  352. Rillen:  Wow.
  353. Songa:  (loops the necklace around Rillen's neck, and then
  354.   suddenly embraces him, giving him a fierce kiss)
  355. Mongo:  Uh-oh.
  356. Gorin:  (grins)  Heh.
  357. Belphanior:  Whew.  (guzzles some wine)
  358. Bosco:  (leaping and dancing about merrily)  Rillen's got a
  359.   _girlfriend_, Rillen's got a _girlfriend_...
  360. Peldor:  (smacks Bosco)  Hush, you're ruining the moment.
  361. Ged:  By Boccob, that's quite a woman.
  362.  
  363.   Though the adventurers had to move on within a few days,
  364. there was, for the moment, much rejoicing.

  374. notes     :  None on this episode...however, this past weekend
  375.            I tried to re-read the entire saga, from episode #1
  376.            all the way up.  I didn't quite make it - I began
  377.            skimming at episode 50 or so.  Still, there are a
  378.            number of things I learned in my readings.  It was
  379.            painfully apparent to me that those first twenty or
  380.            so stories were, shall we say, crude.  There was a
  381.            marked increase in my writing (and story-telling)
  382.            skill after I reached a certain point.  Another
  383.            thing which I'm glad ceased was my tendency to
  384.            share my personal problems and dilemmas with the
  385.            readers, via this "notes" section.  Since things
  386.            have been shaping up for me, for almost a year now,
  387.            I'm glad to say that, as the case has been for the
  388.            last twenty or so episodes (at least), you people
  389.            should be free from my rantings and ravings, save
  390.            those having to do with the stories.  Hmm, what
  391.            else?  Oh, yeah, it sure did take me a while to
  392.            learn the proper spelling of "surprise".  Thanks
  393.            to S. Tucker for pointing this out to me, a couple
  394.            of years ago (I remember it clearly!)
  395.              Anyway, what I _really_ wanted to do here was
  396.            present the weekend's main work:  an encyclopedia
  397.            of all major (and otherwise) personalities that
  398.            the Adventurers have met during their travels,
  399.            trials, and tribulations.  I compiled this while
  400.            doing the reading described above, and I must say
  401.            it was an enjoyable endeavor.  Enjoy!
