  59.           CXXXII.  Fifteen Heads Are Better Than One

  65.   The adventurers have encountered a gigantic hydra amidst
  66. the Blue Forest...
  67.  
  68. hydra:  RRRRRRAAARGH!
  69. Peldor:  Ulp.
  70. Mongo:  Ulp?  Don't just stand there gawking!  Attack!
  71.   (unslings his hammer)
  72. Arnold:  Yah!  (being nearest to the hydra, he leaps forth
  73.   and deals its flank a mighty blow)  Ah-nold!
  74. hydra:  RAARGH!
  75. Peldor:  (bravely turns invisible)
  76. Ged:  By Boccob, I'm ready for battle this time!  (casts a
  77.   Fireball at the hydra)  Take _that_!
  78. Arnold:  (looks up)  Whaaaa?
  79. Lyra:  Wait!  We're in a forest-
  80.  
  81.   There was a tremendous explosion as the fireball hit the
  82. hydra's body, and the thing screamed in pain.
  83.  
  84. hydra:  BLEAAAARGH!
  85.  
  86.   Also, Arnold screamed in pain, toasted slightly by his
  87. liege's spell.  More noticable, though, were the licks of
  88. flame that flew into random parts of the surrounding woods,
  89. starting small fires.
  90.  
  91. Rillen:  _Now_ you have done it.  What a hothead.
  92. Belphanior:  Yea, looks like we're in for quite a forest
  93.  fire here...
  94. Ged:  What?  There's no way my fireball could start a
  95.   forest fire...in the middle of this forest...awfully
  96.   dry forest, at that...hmm...
  97. Lyra:  Maybe I should lightning bolt the beast.
  98. Belphanior:  Lightning?!?  (he finds his lightning rod, and
  99.   tosses it towards the hydra)  Whew.  Maybe I'll avoid
  100.   getting fried this time.
  101. Lyra:  I was only joking.  (sends another fireball at the
  102.   hydra, hitting it in the back)
  103. hydra:  (flounders, its back aflame)  GRAAARG!
  104. Ged:  Forest fire, bah.  How come it's not dead yet?
  105. Rillen:  Sometimes, if you want something done right...(he
  106.   vaults over the snapping heads of the hydra and wallops
  107.   it in the side twice, with his staff)
  108. hydra:  (several of its heads breathe at party members)
  109. Rillen:  (looking at the four heads that just rotated 180
  110.   degrees to face him)  Ouch, that had to hurt-  Hi-yah!
  111.   (leaps aside as two blasts of fire barely miss him)
  112.   What is it with fire today-  Argh!  (gets nailed by a
  113.   pair of frost blasts)  Brr!
  114. hydra:  (decides that it's on a roll, and uses other heads
  115.   to breathe at Arnold and Mongo)  BLEARGH!
  116. Arnold:  (burned and frozen)  Aaa!  (falls, stunned)
  117. Mongo:  (avoids the brunt of four blasts, and is wounded
  118.   only slightly)  Ugh!  Ow!  Argh!
  119. hydra:  (its remaining heads glare at Ged)  Grrr...
  120. Ged:  Uh-oh.
  121. hydra:  (breathes upon Ged with two flame breaths and one
  122.   frost breath)  BLARGH!
  123. Ged:  Argh!  (reels)
  124. Alindyar:  (blasts the monster's body with several magic
  125.   missiles, to little effect)  What can it be that we are
  126.   doing wrong?  The creature seems to ignore every blow.
  127. Mongo:  Enough of this!  (perhaps divinely inspired, he
  128.   comes up with a new tactic, hurling his hammer at one
  129.   of the hydra's heads)  Chew on that!
  130. hydra:  (the head is splattered into pulp, showering the
  131.   nearby, invisible Belphanior with gore)  RAARGH!
  132. Belphanior:  (curses mentally and continues to move around
  133.   to the rear of the monster)
  134. Mongo:  (catches his hammer)  Yeah!  Go for the heads!
  135. Flint:  (near the hydra's flank, he chops the thing twice,
  136.   drawing some blood)  Huh?
  137. Arnold:  (now recovered, he swings at a head, but misses)
  138.   Aaa.
  139. Mongo:  (hurls his hammer, smashing another head)  Hah!
  140. hydra:  GARGH!
  141. Rillen:  (fumbles and drops his staff)  How odd.
  142.  
  143. Mongo:  (catches his hammer, then lets it fly immediately,
  144.   pulverizing a third head)  Fuck yeah!  Get some!
  145. hydra:  RARGH!
  146. Rillen:  (picks up his staff)  Yes, odd indeed.
  147. Belphanior:  (attacks invisibly, from the side, and cuts
  148.   a head off)  Aha!  (becomes visible)  Whoa.
  149. hydra:  (two heads snap at the elf, one hitting for minor
  150.   damage)  GRARG.
  151. Belphanior:  Argh!  (stabs a second head, rendering it
  152.   useless)  Payback!
  153. Mongo:  Hey, why are you all bloody?
  154. Belphanior:  Don't even ask.
  155. Arnold:  (now at the hydra's side, due to the chaos of
  156.   battle, he hacks at the monster's body multiple times,
  157.   inflicting horrendous damage and splattering himself
  158.   with blood)  Now Ah-nold does what Ah-nold does best!
  159. Mongo:  Get bloody?
  160. Rillen:  (getting in on the act, he bashes a head with
  161.   his staff, crushing it)  Yai!
  162. hydra:  GRONK!
  163. Mongo:  (right next to the hydra, he gets bitten in the
  164.   arm before reaching out and smashing another head)
  165. Rillen:  (wallops a head with his staff, braining it)
  166.   No wonder this monster is so dumb.  Its heads are
  167.   almost empty!
  168. hydra:  (some heads breathe at Rillen, Belphanior, and
  169.   Mongo, wounding them slightly)  RAARGH!
  170. Mongo:  I think it's getting tired!  Press the attack!
  171. Lyra:  (casts Magic Missile, blasting a head into small
  172.   bits)  There, that's my contribution.
  173. Flint:  (practically under the hydra's front, he twirls
  174.   his battleaxe, and a head sails into the forest)
  175. Peldor:  (backstabs the hydra...and misses!)  What?!?
  176.   How?!?
  177. Ged:  Well, there's certainly something to be said for
  178.   incompetence...
  179. Peldor:  Hey, at least _I_ didn't set the forest on fire
  180.   like _some_ people we know!
  181. Ged:  Hmm.  (begins casting a spell to conjure a water
  182.   elemental)  Boccob will assist in this endeavor.
  183. Flint:  (splits a head in two with another masterful
  184.   stroke)  Arr!
  185.  
  186. hydra:  (now with only four live heads left)  GRARRrrr...
  187. Lyra:  (blasts several heads with more magic missiles,
  188.   killing one and wounding another)  Hmm, I'm outdoing
  189.   you today...
  190. Alindyar:  Quiet, I am busy spellcasting.
  191. Mongo:  (bashes another head, pulping it)  Only a couple
  192.   left!  come on!
  193. Rillen:  (smashes a head with his staff)  This monster
  194.   might have fared better, were there not so many of us.
  195. hydra:  (almost dead)  Rrrrr.
  196. Flint:  (kills the last head with his axe)  Victory!
  197. Mongo:  Yeah!
  198.  
  199.   The adventurers stood around the huge carcass, most of
  200. them burned, frostbitten, or bloody.  Then, without any
  201. warning, several of the hydra's head-stumps sprouted new
  202. heads - worse still, each stump grew back as _two_ new
  203. heads!
  204.  
  205. Rillen:  Two heads are better than one...so six would be
  206.   better than three...so...
  207. Mongo:  Boggles the mind, doesn't it?
  208. Belphanior:  Back off!  (he uses his wand of acidic
  209.   spheres to cover two heads with acid)  Isn't it obvious
  210.   what the hydra's doing?
  211. hydra:  (the two heads hit by acid dissolve)  RARGH!
  212. Alindyar:  New heads!  For each head slain, two take its
  213.   place...how fascinating...
  214. Mongo:  Yeah, but this is no time to study the thing!
  215. Flint:  (dashes forth and chops at two of the new heads,
  216.   severing both)  Hah!
  217. Belphanior:  What the hell are you doing?!?  Those'll just
  218.   grow back as _four_!
  219. Flint:  Err...yipes.
  220. Peldor:  (behind the hydra, he pours his potion of very
  221.   powerful poison into one of the hydra's gaping body
  222.   wounds)  Maybe that'll stop the thing...
  223. hydra:  (ignores the poison, meaning that it miraculously
  224.   saved...)  GLARGH!  (thrashes about, but doesn't die)
  225. Peldor:  Shit.  What a waste of good poison.
  226. Alindyar:  Everyone get back!  A spell is at hand!
  227. hydra:  (looks around with its current two heads, though
  228.   numerous other ones are starting to grow)  RAAAARGH!
  229. Alindyar:  (casts a Fireball directly upon the heads and
  230.   stumps, cauterizing them all in one fell swoop)
  231. hydra:  (keels over, headless and charred)
  232. Alindyar:  At last - long last, I might add - we have
  233.   succeeded in preventing the beast from growing any more
  234.   new heads.
  235. Mongo:  Proud of yourself, eh?
  236. Alindyar:  Indeed.
  237. Rillen:  Uh...I hate to bring this up, but the forest is
  238.   beginning to blaze.
  239.  
  240.   Truly, the numerous tiny fires created by Ged's fireball
  241. (and, in all fairness, the two others that followed it)
  242. had blazed into larger fires.  Indeed, the party was all
  243. but ringed by burning forest now.
  244.  
  245. Ged:  Have no fear, my water elemental shall quell the
  246.   mighty blaze!
  247. Belphanior:  (to Peldor)  Sometimes I think he likes fire
  248.   almost as much as I do.
  249. water elemental:  (appears)
  250. Ged:  You!  Put out that fire!
  251. water elemental:  (sets about on this impossible task)
  252. Alindyar:  What shall we do?
  253. Arnold:  Aaa.
  254. Flint:  We're screwed for sure now.
  255. Lyra:  Truly, we need a miracle!
  256.  
  257.   Suddenly, the green skies darkened, and thunderheads
  258. boomed above the adventurers.  Momentarily, heavy sheets
  259. of rainfall came down, drenching everyone and putting out
  260. the forest fire.
  261.  
  262. Peldor:  Hmm, at least this world's rain is like our own
  263.   world's.
  264. grey cat:  (soaking wet in Ged's pack, it voices its own
  265.   brand of protest)  Meow!
  266. Ged:  Shh, not now.
  267.  
  268.   Despite the downpour, there were wounds to be healed,
  269. so a crude lean-to was quickly constructed - not that it
  270. mattered, as everyone was thoroughly drenched at this
  271. point.  Peldor rang his magical healing bell, while Ged
  272. began casting spells to cure the wounds of his fellows.
  273.   Later, as the nine adventurers rested and shivered in
  274. their makeshift shelter, a number of wild-looking elves
  275. suddenly surrounded them.
  276.  
  277. wild elf:  For your sakes, I certainly hope you've a
  278.   jolly good reason for trying to burn our forest down.

  284. next time:  the discovery of another duplicate (really)
  285.  
  286. notes:  There are few matters that the players and I
  287.       have dissenting opinions on, but the effect of
  288.       fireballs in forests is one of them...
