Subject: Rolemaster Magic
Summary: Alternate PP recovery
The Rolemaster magic system is, IMHO, one of the very best. One flaw,
however, has recently attracted my attention.
Spells/casting are divided into three very separate realms, but with
very little distinction between them. What is the difference, in terms
of game mechanics, between say, essence and mentalism? Not much.
Theoretically, each realm plugs into 'magic' in a different way.
I feel that power point recovery should reflect this; and so:
Essence user: recover 1/8 of total PP per hour of sleep +(con bonus)/25
per hour (awake or asleep).
Channeling user: recover (1/4 of total PP) or (10 PP) per hour spent in
prayer/meditation, whichever is slower.
Mentalism user: recover 1 PP per ( PP missing * 5 minutes).
Using this system has the following effects (among others):
Low-level essence casters with high constitutions can cast several times
as many spells as their weakling friends.
Channelers of all levels spend significant amounts of time in prayer. If
you don't pray for a week, you don't cast many spells. The more devout
(high level) you become, the more time you spend in prayer.
Mentalists do far better if they cast lesser spells or rest frequently.
The weaker they get, the slower they recover.
I hope this adds some spice to the casting realms.
