continuing from the last article (Sorcery? No dice. part 1) ...
(demonic personalities) ]:>
here are some examples of demons and their powers and how their personalities
come into the picture...
a small black monkey-like form has two big blue luminescent lantern eyes with
cat-irises. it walks upright, not moving it's body from side-to-side, but seem-
ing to glide like a water-spider, moving suddenly and stopping as fast, always
staying in the shadows, almost out of vision's reach. It's head bobs up and
down, left and right -- like a worn-out helium baloon, connected to the
shoulders with a strand of yarn. I makes no sound at all and it's mouth is a
timy slit. Jet-black silk fur covers it's body, wispy so you can see its oily
black skin. When its eyes close, you can hardly see it at all. the hands are
splayed and it's easy to see how good they are, when it glides up a wall and
stops, fastened by it's hands and feet, or when one of them darts out to grab
a trinket. It's tail is barbed, with a red beating tip. it can paralyze some-
one if it gets cornered. It's only one foot tall.
this is a wimpy demon. in general, the bigger a demon, the more powerful it
is (but this isn't always true). this is because stronger thoughts => bigger
form=>older demon. It is possible to damage a demon, because although they
are not flesh, they are still solid (usually), and vulnerable due to mental
blocks (living creates a habit of being solid...).
some of the powers of this demon: it can climb things very well. it can
paralyze people with its tail. it is very hard to notice. it has very good
perceptionsit makes no noise.
a sorceror would use this demon as a spy. He would probably summon it while
he was holding a large sledge-hammer in a small room... (more on summoning
techniques later..).
personality: this demon was a clerical worker for a powerful king in life.
he spent most of his time eves-dropping and blackmailing underlings and
minor nobles. He occasionally stole a tart or roll from the castle kitchen,
but that was the extent of his theivery. He thinks of himself as a really
good sneak and thinks that he's really hot stuff. He is a servant of the
Black Widow (he did most of his eves-dropping with sorcery) -- she wanted an-
other pawn in this kings court -- so when he died, she enhanced his form a
little, so he was more useful, and now she uses him as a spy. She will give
out his name to her servants for a nominal price, because she usually benefits
from his spying more than the summoner does anyway (she gets more pieces for
her puzzle of world events).
If the Black Widow was thinking of it anyway, she might give this demon's name
to someone as a reward for something -- may as well make them feel wanted; a
happy servant is far better than an unwilling one...
the demon's name is 'Snarlic.' (you can give them your own names, if you don't
like mine). Snarlic is a servant of the Black Widow.
I'll give some short summaries of other demons, since you could write a whole
article on one demon...
'Krenta': a brown puff of feather-wisps, about 8 inches in diameter (NOT D&D
inches, real inches!) with a hard core in the middle (about 1mm wide) it has
five boney spider-legs which it can retract into the core (all right, so the
core is too small. it's a demon...). the legs are about on foot long, each.
using its legs, it can move very fast -- about three times as fast as an aver-
age man at a run. Not using its legs, it can float at about 1/3 as fast as
an average man at a walk, in any direction. It can climb walls, too.
this demon is also a spy, but it's more powerful than the last one. if anyone
swings a sword at it, or tries to hit it, chances are, it'll float just out of
the way on the air currents... it can squeeze through keyholes and underneath
doors, too... A servant of the black widow might summon this one and use it
as a riding beast in spider form... Krenta is a servant of the Black Widow.
'Gud': this one is an old demon, not a servant of anyone but Santanos (as are
all demons). He's about 50 feet tall and 40 feet wide at the base. He is a
roughly cone-shaped mound of fat. if you summon him, you'd better be on the
ground, he's very heavy (a friend once summoned him on the top floor of a cas-
tle, and he crashed through each floor until he landed in a small crater in the
cellar). He's a pretty good natured demon, but if you piss him off, he might
pick you up and hit someone with you. He's a great battle-demon. People have
been known to summon him into a battle and leave. When they turn around to
look at him, he's usually sweeping up with one or two trees, because of all
of the little nuisances around him... When you summon Gud, you'd better have
a good price in mind...
-- Making up demons --
here are a couple of reasons you might want to make up a demon: you need one
for a purpose in an adventure, a character is looking for a certain type of
demon and gets another demon to give him the name of one, you just want to.
in the first case, you probably already have one in mind, in the second case,
your player gives you somewhere to start, but in the third case, you have to
do some brainstorming.
demons are NPCs. they each have a personality. They do not naturally come in
types (like Other-Game{TM} demons do), although their patron may force a par-
ticualr form on them... Usually, first I make up the demon's form, then I make
up a fitting personality. You can do it the other way-around, too..
I'll end this one here, because I have another sublect in mind, that needs its
own article -- I'm posting so many today, because Joe (the one who's posting
these really) is leaving tomorrow night, and I'm not sure how often he'll be
posting, now..
next article: anatomy of a soul and dealing with demons...
(I can't wait to get through all of the intro stuff so I can talk about
the system without describing it...)
