  9. with "Archive:" so it doesn't get lost in the dozens of messages which
  10. arrive daily (many of which are deleted if they don't look interesting).

  12. Some frequently asked questions:

  14. Q. What is a .gz extension mean?
  15.  
  16. A. Files with a .gz extension are compessed using GNU ZIP, a free
  17.    compression utility.  If you run Linux, it should be available on
  18.    your system as gzip; many UNIX systems will have it as well.  If
  19.    you run DOS, get ftp://ftp.cs.pdx.edu/pub/gnu/gzip-1.2.4.msdos.exe
  20.    If you use Windows 95 or Windows NT, WinZip will handle .gz files.

  22. Q. What is a .Z extension?
  23.  
  24. A. I don't think there are any of these in the archive, but if you
  25.    find one, it is a file compressed with the UNIX 'compress' utility.
  26.    Versions are available for all major operating systems, and are
  27.    included with UNIX and Linux.

  29. Q. What are .tar files?
  30.  
  31. A. Files with a .tar extension are uncompressed archives; "tar" is a
  32.    utility (Tape ARchiver) which can be found on any UNIX system.
  33.    Versions are available for DOS in any decent archive (extar.exe
  34.    is a good one), and Win95/WinNT users can use WinZip.

  36. Q. What is a .tar.Z, .tar.gz, or .tgz file?

  38. A. Tarred files are frequently compressed with "compress" (.tar.Z) or
  39.    GNU Zip (.tar.gz or .tgz). Such files should first be decompressed
  40.    to produce a .tar file, then untarred as described above.

  43. Q. Hey... what about the Macintosh?
  44.  
  45. A. Sorry, I really don't know anything about it.  I am sure Mac versions
  46.    of the above utilities are available, but I don't know what they are
  47.    called or where to get them.  Check your favorite general-purpose FTP
  48.    archive in the "archiving" or "compression" or "utilities" section.
