Ok... I do still exist, and am still writing. Because my writing
schedule has been so flaky (and I am trying to improve on that) I
think it would be a good idea to try to recap the plot of the story.
In the beginning, the head of the Internal Investigations &
Recovery, a branch of MI5, collected some recently graduated agents
for what seemed to be an unimportant but mysterious mission; a ship
named the _Caduces_ had sunk in the Irish sea, and part of its cargo
was a Cray. But another part of the cargo, a Cadillac, had been found
in Scotland, and it seemed possible that the Cray was not lost, but
had actually been stolen. Robert Samuels, a victim of a mind-altering
head injury, was assigned to be their supervisor.
The Cadillac, when searched, contained loamy mud from like the
soil where it was found, sand from a beach, stains of Bocks Dark ale,
and traces of cannabis and peyote. On the crew of the _Caduces_, they
found Natalie Ash and Hambo Mgune, who were known to be connected to
John Finger, a local crimelord. Also on the boat was Nigel Coleman,
an MI5 agent placed on the ship to watch the Cray. This information
had been concealed from them, ostensibly for internal security.
The agents then split up, with Jake and Angel going to Land's End
(it was mentioned in Coleman's file) and Ardrin and Janie going to
Scotland to look over the Cadillac crash site. Jake and Angel did not
find much of importance, but Ardrin and Janie saw something odd on the
bottom of the river Spie in the town of Mikleway. They also went to
the University of Glasgow and met Professor Ernest Samuels, the man
who would have been in charge of the Cray. Ardrin discovered a huge
quantity of Pillsbury Chocolate Chip Banana Nut Bread mix in the
kitchen. The bread mix was another part of the cargo, and Ardrin and
Janie begin to become suspicious of Professor Samuels.
Angel and Jake went to Scotland, and they all went to Mikleway in
a boat. Jake dove into the river, and found an earthmover, yet
another part of the missing cargo. But the agents saw Mr. Finger on
the shore, and when they came into town, they were attacked. After a
short gun battle, many of the town's inhabitats were killed, as was
Jake. Janie and Angel were hospitalized, and Mr. Finger escaped.
Ardrin went through Mikleway, particularly a house in the
southern part of town Finger seemed to have owned. He interviewed the
survivors, went through files, and checked up his phone calls. After
they got out of the hospital, they all went to the U. of Glasgow to
confront Professor Samuels. Samuels stalled, then lied, then tricked
them out of his office and destroyed most everything they might use
against him. After he had fled, the agents found considerable
evidence of sexual misdealings in his office, and turned it over to
the head of his department and returned to London.
The next morning, they were all awakened with the news that (Bob)
Samuels has been found stabbed in his office. The security videotape
showed Finger and Ash entering the building with phony ID. Samuels'
office was looted, and some strange symbols were scrawled on his wall
in his own blood. Hartree blocked their efforts to find out how the
invaders had gotten into the building for security reasons, so they
tried to find out what the symbols might mean by going to Oxford, and
consulting Professor Percival Merryweather, who identifies them as
some Crowleyite gibberish, like "We are watch-" that was cut off in
mid-sentence.
While Mr. Samuels was in the hospital, the agents began tracking
down what leads they had. Mr. Finger had made several calls from his
house in Mikleway, mostly to various women. Janie was captured by
Professor Samuels, who tried to torture the location of the Cray out
of her. She misdirected him and escaped. Angel and Ardrin, meanwhile,
had gone back to Scotland, and ran into Mr. Finger, who threw a flash
grenade at Ardrin and escaped.
With Ardrin and Janie in various hospitals for treatment, Angel
was summoned back to London to meet their new supervisor, Tom Grayson.
He took them to task for the sloppy way they'd conducted the
investigation so far, particularly not cross-checking Merryweather's
statement. In a fit of pique, Angel and Janie managed to trace one of
Finger's accounts to a bank account in Inverness, owned by the
Benevolent Temple of B'nai B'rith. They also looked up what they
could on Merryweather; he had a very strange background, and looked
almost the same now as he did in 20-year old photographs.
The agents finally converged in Inverness, to arrest Jillian
Flash, one of Finger's girlfriends who had been transfering money to
the Shriner account. She also had a small copper dagger in a safety
deposit box which turns out to be thousands of years old. Flash
escaped from police custody while they were interviewing the Shriners,
and was captured by Professor Samuels, who had been following the
agents. The agents found them, were forced to shoot Samuels, and
recaptured Flash, who had been tortured for information.
Late that night, the agents broke into the Shriner's temple,
seeking something to connect them with Finger. They found a large bag
of cash in the basement, and a locked room on the second floor they
couldn't get into. Frustrated, they went back to their hotel, where
they got a note from Mr. Finger himself. He explained that they
should forget about Samuels and the Shriners, and concentrate on
Merryweather, and on his friend, who was waiting for them in the room
below. Investigating, they found Natalie Ash, armored and armed and
spoiling for a fight.
Everyone went to the hospital. Jillian Flash died during the
night, and Ardrin was attacked by a ghost weilding the copper dagger.
Janie found a book by Merryweather, dating to 1885, about the Cult of
Kutulu, and a mention in the newspaper of some cult killings he had a
prominent role in. After a few days, Grayson pulled them out of bed
and they all went to the Orkneys, with some heavy firepower.
Searching the islands for Merryweather, the agents decide to
investigate the dissapearance of a boatload of school children, hoping
it's connected to him. They stop at the island of Papa Westray, have
a drugged dinner, and are attacked by the villagers and a horde of sea
monsters while hallucinating in a rainstorm. Grayson is killed by the
monsters, and the rest of them flee to a large house which turns out
to be Merryweathers. He comes to kill them, but they find a mummified
body in the attic with an ankh around its neck. When they rip the
ankh off, Merryweather rots away to dust as his essence is dispelled.
Whew. I realize the plot of this adventure is very convoluted,
and thank you all for bearing with me so far. It has been fun to
write, and more of a challenge, in many ways, than Navero. And in the
future, as the plot thickens and twists and kinks around in the
strange ways I know it will, I hope you'll write to me if you need
anything explained; I'll be happy to try my best. :-)
