  86. Personal History:

  88. Kristin St. James grew up on Starbase 11, the only child of a single-parent
  89. family. Her mother, who had been promoted to Captain by the time Kris was
  90. entering high school, was a strict disciplinarian, wanting her daughter to
  91. enter Star Fleet and be the perfect officer. However, Kristin had a certain
  92. hellbent attitude about her, an irresponsibility of sorts that provoked her to
  93. fall into situations just to see whether or not she could dig herself back out
  94. of them. Indeed, one of these situations led her into a serious confrontation
  95. with the law. She had become somewhat of a computer hack (with her mother's
  96. insistence upon early technical training), and had found a way to break into
  97. her school's computer. She was soon making a business out of modifying the
  98. grade reports of her fellow students. Of course, she was eventually caught,
  99. however, because of her status as a minor, she managed to circumvent the usual
  100. long-term repercussions for destructive-hacking.
  101.  
  102. Unfortunately for Kristin, that was one advantages that couldn't last forever.
  103. A week after her 18th birthday, she was picked up on drugs possession charges.
  104. She ditched her parole a month later, but was caught on Alpha Centauri with a
  105. purse full of stolen dilithium (recently pilfered from Starbase 11).
  106. Apparently, she had contacted a number of her high-school buddies and trained
  107. them to cooperate as a team to steal the dilithium. They were all caught after
  108. one of them had snitched to the military police.
  109.  
  110. Since (at her mother's insistence) she had already submitted an application to
  111. Star Fleet Academy and had been accepted (pending the outcome of her parole),
  112. and since the grand theft charge had taken place at Starbase 11, she was
  113. technically under military jurisdiction. The judge presiding over the case was
  114. so impressed with her leadership abilities and daring, that he decided to give
  115. Kristin a choice. She could either go into the Academy (an idea she was not
  116. particularly happy about), or she could do jail time. Needless to say, she
  117. chose the Academy.

  120. Service History:
  121. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------
  122. Kristin started Academy training when she was 19. Her emphasis immediately
  123. became security systems and stealth/combat procedures (both of which she was
  124. already familiar with). Her fore-knowledge of "standard operating procedures"
  125. and the strengths and weaknesses thereof allowed her to set-up strategies which
  126. made her a team leader at the Academy with a respected record of successful
  127. trials. However, while she usually achieved the goals of the exercise, she had
  128. a certain callousness about her, a disrespect for the "lives" of the people
  129. under her, often placing them in suicidal situations so that the overall-team
  130. could reach its goals. However, while the art of sacrifice (her favorite
  131. tactic) worked very well in the simulation chamber where nobody was really
  132. going to die anyway, her instructors realized that it wouldn't work so well in
  133. real-life.

  135. To prove the point to her, they staged a fake terrorist attack, making sure
  136. that all the potential weapons available to the students were either mock-ups
  137. or non-lethal. During the exercise, all the cadets including Kris were under
  138. the assumption that the situation was a real one, not an exercise. As usual,
  139. however, her instructors didn't count on Kristin's ingenuity or criminal
  140. instincts.
  141.  
  142. Instead of trying to overpower the terrorists and steal their lasers in a timed
  143. blitz (with the knowledge that even if successful, at least half of her fellow
  144. cadets would probably be killed), she decided to rig an explosion in the locker
  145. room of the building with some plastique she'd previously pilfered and hidden
  146. beneath a drainage duct. Her hope was that the explosion would draw the enemy's
  147. attention away from the cadets, and that they'd be able to escape during the
  148. ensuing confusion. Not only did the plan work, but her team managed to
  149. overpower and subdue the remaining "terrorists" without sustaining a single
  150. casualty. In the aftermath, it was decided that her success was due to the fact
  151. that the instructors didn't stay in character after the explosion. Either way,
  152. however, she became a hero of the security college that day (mostly for
  153. destroying lots of property in front of everybody and getting away with it).

  155. After graduation, Kristin had to take three cadet cruises before she finally
  156. rose to Ensign. The first was aboard the USS Kirwin where she served as a
  157. boarding officer in training. In fact, her duties were more ground-based than
  158. shipboard, and she was frequently called upon to run customs inspections of
  159. colonial ports which the Kirwin visited. Her second cruise was aboard the USS
  160. Moonbeam, a luxurious passenger liner used for transporting officers, support
  161. staff, and regular passengers from one starport to another. Here, she was
  162. frequently called upon to serve as a personal bodyguard for various
  163. individuals. Other times, her duty was to attend social functions as a
  164. "plain-clothes" security officer. Her final cadet cruise was aboard the USS
  165. Tanner, where she served as a weapons officer for the Scout Ship's small
  166. arsenal. Hence, while she didn't distinguish herself at any point, she did get
  167. on-the-job training in a wide variety of security related duties.
  168.  
  169. After her promotion to Ensign, Kristin was posted to the USS Farragut, one of
  170. the few Enterprise Class Cruisers in the fleet, for a five year mission of
  171. galactic exploration. While on the Farragut, she served primarily in landing
  172. parties, protecting the senior staff. At one point, she even found herself in a
  173. combat situation, similar to the so-called "terrorist exercise" at the academy.
  174. Only this time, it was for real. The landing party had been "kidnapped" from
  175. the Farragut while in transport to a planetary surface. The ship, a Gothmog
  176. (klingon-human) craft, fled the scene of the crime with its prisoners, hiding
  177. inside the cloudy layers of a nearby gas giant before the Farragut even figured
  178. out what happened. Then the Gothmogs cloaked and casually slipped away beneath
  179. the scans of an assortment of Federation ships which had arrived on the scene,
  180. taking their hostages to an asteroid base.

  182. It was a bad situation, one which Kristin realized she couldn't cheat her way
  183. out of. Nor could she sacrifice the lives of the senior officers in a blitz-
  184. maneuver similar to those she'd honed at the Academy. She decided to accept the
  185. situation and just try to keep the senior officers alive. In doing so, she
  186. ended up getting into numerous physical contests with the Gothmogs as the
  187. prisoners had to "play games" for the privileges of food, drink, and air, not
  188. to mention freedom from pain-manacles. Meanwhile, a Federation diplomat by the
  189. name of Sarin was brought in to negotiate for the release of the hostages. When
  190. Sarin was finally granted the privilege of visiting the prisoners, he gave
  191. Kristin the code to the cell doors (which he had learned via telepathy from the
  192. guards). Using this, she managed to break free with a number of the others, and
  193. although they couldn't escape the asteroid base on their own, they did manage
  194. to take the Gothmog leader captive. With the tables turned from the inside-out,
  195. the Gothmogs were forced to meet Sarin's terms and free the prisoners.

  197. Kristin was promoted to 2nd Lieutenant and stationed at New Jerusalem, a
  198. colony world and the site of a Federation supply depot. Serving as the weapons'
  199. quartermaster, Kristin was in charge of the acquisition and distribution of
  200. personal firearms and components for ship's weapons including photon torpedoes.
  201. It was a prestigious position to be in, not to mention one of special trust, as
  202. if she so desired, she could have made a lot of money in illicit arms sales. It
  203. was at this point that Kristin realized that Star Fleet was finally placing
  204. faith in her, and she was going to prove herself worthy of that faith. However,
  205. when a shipment of p-torps turned up missing, Kristin was suddenly the prime
  206. suspect. She knew she had to take it upon herself to investigate what happened,
  207. or she'd soon find herself at a court-martial hearing by reason of suspicion.
  208. She did, in fact, solve the case. Her personal assistant had diverted the
  209. shipment, and had forged her authorization. She not only caught him, but she
  210. personally tracked down the missing hardware and (when she couldn't regain it
  211. by threat) promptly had it destroyed (along with the buyers).

  213. Kristin's next assignment was to Starbase 11, the place of her birth and
  214. childhood. Her mother had retired, by this point, but everybody knew who
  215. Kristin was as well as what she had done in her youth. Many of her old buddies
  216. came back to pay their respects, some of them ex-jailbirds, others professional
  217. losers. They were all hoping to cash in on Kristin's "sudden" success. While
  218. she did what she had to do to fulfill her duties, she also let the scumbags
  219. walk too many times, remembering how life might have been for her if she hadn't
  220. been given a second chance. Despite the lenience, she soon became one of the
  221. most despised people on the Starbase, and after only a year, she found herself
  222. asking for a transfer.

  224. She ended up being stationed aboard the USS Typhoon, a Baker-class destroyer.
  225. Her only significant encounter during her three years on board the Typhoon was
  226. during a supply run to Alpha Fabian VI. The planet, a mining colony, had an
  227. inordinate amount of geologic activity. It was hypothesized that the large-
  228. scale mining (which was performed via the subterranean detonation of photon
  229. grenades) had caused instabilities in the planetary crust to intensify. Kristin
  230. was on the planet taking tricorder readings with a team of geologists when a
  231. major earthquake occurred, killing several in the party. While she managed to
  232. save a few lives, she wasn't completely successful. Some of the casualties died
  233. of internal injuries. Others died as they tried to make a "climb" back to the
  234. surface. Though the formal inquiry absolved her of blame, Kristin is still
  235. unsure whether she would have made the same decisions over again. Recently,
  236. they have picked up Ambassador Sarin who is on his way to the Rigel Cluster.
