Introduction and FAQ to Riverworld PBEM Stories
by Alan Schwartz
In September 1995, I began running a play-by-email (PBEM) role-playing
game that uses Philip Jose Farmer's excellent Riverworld novels as
its setting. All of humanity is reborn on a planet on which a wide
river meanders from pole to pole; historical characters from different
time periods interact, and perhaps try to discover what's going on.
Currently, the characters in the PBEM RPG include:
Charlemagne Cleopatra Florence Nightingale
George Patton Glenn Gould Hypatia of Alexandria
Jeanne D'arc Josephine Baker Mary Shelley
Shaka Zulu Theodore Roosevelt
Each "Turn" of the PBEM game is a chapter in an ongoing story that is
co-authored by myself and the players. One Turn of the PBEM game is
issued each week, and will be posted to rec.games.ftp.archive with the
subject line:
STORY: Riverworld, Chapter [whatever]: [Title]
The chapters posted here detail the actions of all the characters.
Players in the game, however, receive customized versions of the Turns
which show only those events which their characters witness, and
only those languages which their characters understand.
The ongoing story is archived on the world-wide web at:
http://mellers1.psych.berkeley.edu/~alansz/rw-pbem
The archive includes the story from each character's perspective,
the complete story, all the game moves mailed in by each player,
and background on the theme, the game and the characters.
New character applications are *NOT* currently being accepted. If that
changes, it will be posted on the web page.
Comments on the story are welcome! Please direct them to:

The players and I hope you enjoy reading.
