From Raelity to Reality
Like the townspeople spreading out far beyond him, Kyle, too, wandered about
in the woods. Unlike them, he did not search for the Squonk. He knew all
that remained of the mythical creature he had collected in his water pouch.
As the cries of the townspeople faded into the whispering echoes of the
rustling forest, Kyle's steps slowed with weariness. Soon, he reached for the
ground, to place himself gently down amongst the grasses under the trees. As
he fell asleep, the ground stirred beneath him, withdrawing the grasses that
had been gently brushing against his face. The ground turned hard and rocky,
and Kyle stirred uncomfortably in his sleep, occasionally moaning with pain.
The trees above him reached up and embraced each other, until their branches
formed a canopy above him. Their spreading branches and leaves fused into
solid granite.
Footsteps approached him, and Gernodt came into view. He walked up to the boy
and knelt beside him, examining the wounds that had again appeared on his skin.
He reached down...and thrust his hand into Kyle's side. He twisted and turned
his hand within the boy, before pulling it out again, holding bone, flesh, and
sinew in his grasp. The flesh around Kyle's side poured in, filling the
wound, until no sign of it remained, as Gernodt took the flesh in his
hand, and thrust it into his own side, grimacing in pain as he did so.
Gasping for air, he did the same for Kyle's jaw, except more gently and
delicately this time. After he transferred Kyle's damaged flesh to his own,
he eased himself to the ground beside him. Making himself as comfortable as
possible, he closed his eyes and quickly fell into unconsciousness, and the
wounds that were apparent on Kyle materialized in the same locations on
Gernodt...
