I have some interesting news to pass on. I've recently been conversing
with Sean Reynolds, the current Netrep for TSR. As we all know, there
has been an ongoing net-uproar about TSR's policies regarding
net-community-generated game resources for TSR's gaming systems
(primarily AD&D).
From my talks with Sean, it appears much of the problem, in the eyes of
the net, was caused by an overzealous Netrep (not Sean, the previous
guy), and an overzealous lawyer, both of whom were taking the all-or-none
stand on the issue. here are some of bits of clarification I have
learned from Sean:
1) Making spell lists, character lists, etc. is no problem. Their only
problem is using obvious TSR trademarks in your texts, except when used
as examples, and when the appropriate TM's and R's in the text as well.
2) TSR does want to keep TSR related materials on TSR approved archives.
Now, we all understand the problems with the currently existing archives,
however TSR is pursuing larger, easily available archives for use. Also,
once I have my system at home up to speed, I will be applying to be an
archive site as well.
3) TSR doesn not want you to edit out your texts such that they keep out
all sex, gore, etc. It's the truly graphic and/or unsavory things they don't
want people putting on their archives (like the AD&D Guide to Babykilling).
Things like scanned versions of adventure modules they have published are
also right out for obvious reasons.
Sean is doing everything he can to help repair the damage done by Rob and
the lawyer involved in the earlier stuff. They are working on modifying
disclaimers to deal with archive mirroring as well. TSR is not trying to
purge texts from the net. TSR is not trying to lose their customer base.
No I haven't been payed off by TSR to say this. I was one of the avid
"TSR must die" folks who refused to have anything to do with TSR while
Rob was Netrep. Things appear to be getting better. Feel free to email
Sean at TSRinc@aol.com and he'll be happy to answer questions.
So all those who were holding out on posting AD&D things to
rec.games.frp.archives because of all this, fear not! Post away!

This is just my monthly message of how I do things here as moderator of
this group, where to find various things, etc.
Firstly, do not send comments about stories, archive updates, etc. to me.
I just post the stuff. Send them to the authors. I don't forget
frequently to put the author's address in the From: line, but should it
happen, feel free to ask me who it is. If a poster requests anonymity
for whatever reason, email addresses will not be given out. Period.
Also, any posts containing comments/questions about stories, etc. will
*not* get posted. Check out the charter for the group for further
details.
Secondly, to get something posted to the group, just post like you
normally would. The message will get forwarded to me for actual posting.
If you find your software having problems getting posts to me, go ahead
and send mail directly to me with the appropriate headers intact.
When you do post, or if for some reason you have to send something to me,
please include the headers below in the subject line. This filters to a
separate mail folder of mine. I get 200-300 work-related mail messages per
day, and don't want these getting lost in my self-imposed daily tedium.
Posts with advertisements, announcements about conventioned, etc. will not
be posted. People don't want to archive the posts, therefore they don't
get posted. I'm not some sort of anti-commercial-internet-nazi (I work for
UUNET for crying out loud 8-), it just doesn't belong here. Try posting to
..announce or .misc.
Forged postings will be cancelled, period. I don't care if it was valid or
not. If you're not seeing something posted that should be. Send me mail
and find out what the scoop is that way. If I or one of the backups didn't
post it, expect it to go bye-bye.
Headers:
The headers for posts will contain one of several prefixes to
indicate the type of post. They will be:
STORY: for stories.
REFERENCE: for materials pertaining to other posts, such as story
indeces, FAQ's, etc.
SUPPLEMENT: for game rules or additions.
CHARACTER: for example characters
RESOURCE: for game tools which are non system/genre specific.
BINARY: for uuencoded binaries of photos or executables of gaming-related subjects.
REVIEW: reviews of publications.
LIST: miscellaneous list of neat stuff.
ADMIN: administrative schtuff
Other headers may be created, and I will explain them when this occurs.
If an issue for a series, such as ADVENTURERS, for some reason does not
get posted, please send me mail about it. I do not read every series
(other than to verify that it should be posted), and as such do not keep
track of many of the issue numbers closely. I will try to find out what
happened, and get the non-posting corrected.
I will no longer be posting the monthly archives list posting, due to the
fact that it's no longer being maintained regularly. I will keep it
here, and if individuals would like copies, I will be happy to mail it to
them. I will be modifying the "Welcome to..." message with this
information as well. Just and FYI. Greg Schmidt has mailed me a
modified version of the lists, so if you have an old copy, you may want
to get the new one. Just send me email.
I will make my best effort to get to posts at least once a day. Occasionally,
however, things here get hideously busy, and may not get to it once in a
while. Don't panic unless you don't see a posting for, say, 3-4 days. 8-)
Weekend postings will also frequently not get posted until Monday morning.
Feel free to send me mail with comments, criticisms, missed information,
but please include the above-mentioned strings so I don't miss them.
Flames with be sent to the bit-bucket.
