BOB DYLAN WINS FOLKNIK
VOTE AT SRO $11,500 GIG
IN PHILHARMONIC HALL, N.Y.
Bob Dylan, the young singer-composer who has emerged as the
ideological leader for the folknik faction, delivered his message
in strikingly persuasive style at his concert in Philharmonic Hall
at Lincoln Center, N.Y. Saturday night (31). He played before a
partisan sellout audience which grossed $11,500 for the promoters,
Ashes & Sand Inc.
Decked out in an offbeat, but fashionble backwoods ensemble of
blue jeans, suede boots and jacket, Dylan performed an excellent
program of his own material including romantic ballads, hard-biting
social commentary and oblique flights of poetry. His vocal style
stems from the country & western tradition enriched by his contemporary
outlook.
Joan Baez, the distaff star of the folksinging school, reciprocated
Dylan's appearances at her concerts by joining him on stage after the
intermission. Their duets on "With God On My Side" and "It Ain't Me
Babe: were the evening highlights. Despite the continuing ovation from
the audience, Dylan only consented to return for one encore, "All I
Really Want To do," and then left the stage to go on his own way.
