  3. This directory contains the image library of the VISIONS group at
  4. UMass/Amherst.  Each sub-directory contains a specific sort of image: 
  5. motion sequences, color images, outdoor images, indoor images, etc. 
  6. Typically the name of the directory suggests the sort of images in the
  7. directory.
  8.  
  9. There is also an interactive DB of image descriptions available.  Telneting
  10. in as 'visimgdb' to vis-ftp.cs.umass.edu will place you in an interactive
  11. program which will allow you to search a data base of image descriptions.
  12. The data base and the program to access are also available for FTP'ing
  13. in the directory imdb (the data base is vis-imagedb.ilb* and the program
  14. source is in image_db.tar.Z).

  16. Most of the image data is in what we call "Universal Plane File
  17. Format" - this is a variation of our LLVS plane file format.  The
  18. directory 'universal_plane_file_format' contains documentation
  19. describing this format as well as code to read these files on several
  20. different platforms.  These plane files always have an extension of
  21. '.plane'.  Plane files should always be transfered in binary mode. Some
  22. files have an extension of .im - these files are in KBVision image
  23. format. For more information about KBV, you can send mail to
  24. aaimail@aai.com.

  30. Jan-15-1991 - by popular request, some of the motion data files have
  31. been collected into tar files and compressed.  Also, all of the files
  32. in 'universal_plane_file_format' have also been collected into a tar
  33. file and compressed.  This has been done to make FTP'ing easier.  RPH.

  35. More news: there is a file named ls-lR.Z in the top-level of the FTP
  36. tree.  This file is the compressed output from a "ls -lR" of the FTP
  37. tree. It is updated weekly. RPH

  39. Aug-08-1994 -- Coming soon: VISIONS group papers will start to become
  40. available via FTP.  These will be compressed PostScript files (.ps.Z).
  41. Also we are looking into putting our images onto CDROMs and mounting
  42. these CDROMS on our FTP server -- this will mean that more of our image
  43. library will be online, rather that lots of stuff living on tapes -- we
  44. have been backing up and deleting less used data to make room for new
  45. data, soon we will be making CDROMs instead, so everything will stay
  46. online.  RPH

  48. Wed Oct 19 12:30:01 1994 -- VISIONS group papers are becoming available
  49. via FTP.  These are in the form of compressed PostScript files (.ps.Z).
  50. They are all under the /Papers directory.  Files are under the first
  51. author's name.  There are README files in each directory giving a bibtex
  52. like listing of all the papers a given author is a co-author of.

  54. Also:  please use "vis-ftp.cs.umass.edu" instead of
  55. "cicero.cs.umass.edu". We may move the ftp server to a different machine
  56. (with a bigger disk) at some time in the future.  The
  57. "vis-ftp.cs.umass.edu" alias will change if and when this happens.  RPH

  59. Fri Nov 18 09:46:50 1994: vis-ftp.cs.umass.edu has moved from
  60. cicero.cs.umass.edu to klingon.cs.umass.edu and the archive is now on a
  61. 2gig partition of a 9gig drive, instead of a 600meg drive.  Lots more
  62. room for stuff now.  (You should still use vis-ftp.cs.umass.edu --
  63. things may change in the future.)  RPH

  65. Fri Mar 31 10:24:23 1995: vis-www.cs.umass.edu can now access this
  66. archive intelligently -- there are now .html files all through this
  67. archive.  Check out http://vis-www.cs.umass.edu/~vislib/.  Also I have
  68. organized things by categories:
