<div class="field-content"><div class="body-row" id="body-row-207478"><div style="background:#F5F5F5;"><p>The <a target="_blank" href="http://www.mobileworldcongress.com/">Mobile World Congress</a>, a huge mobile-oriented conference convening in February in Barcelona, Spain, has been dominated by the <a href="http://tuaw.com/tag/iphone">iPhone</a> over the last several years. However, there has never been a formal presence by Apple or many major players in the iPhone ecosphere at the event. That's going to change in February of 2011 when the first Macworld Mobile will be held at MWC to showcase iOS developers.</p>
<p>As with the annual <a href="http://tuaw.com/category/macworld">Macworld</a> Expo event in San Francisco, Macworld Mobile is organized by IDG World Expo, which is partnering with the MWC parent organization (GSMA) to bring the event to Barcelona. As with Macworld, Apple does not plan on participating in Macworld Mobile. The event is scheduled for February 14-17, 2011 and offers a developer track with a number of technical sessions.</p>

Previously, sharing to an Airport Express resulted in both outputs being tied directly to the current volume that iTunes was set to use. Set the output to 100% and all speakers would be set to 100%. Move it to 50% and all the speakers will move to 50%.<br />

The new controller has a 'master volume' bar. The highest volume determines the 'master volume'. If the highest volume slider is at 80% then the master volume slider sets itself to 80%. Any change to either the master volume or the highest volume directly correlates to the other. If the highest volume (V1) dips below another volume level (V2) the master volume binds itself to the new highest volume level (V2). This can only happen if the highest volume level is adjusted directly, and not as a result of adjusting the master volume.<br />

This will give a high-contrast side bar and listing pane. To undo this repeat the command but change the TRUE to FALSE. I haven't managed to get the color icons back yet though.<br />

There's no ear speaker or phone service on the device, obviously, but nevertheless Apple's iPod touch display units show that the Phone app is still sitting down there in the lower left corner. Searching in Spotlight, according to another screenshot, will bring up the text messaging app, and there's one more little mistake (look in the Travel folder to see if you can spot it).</p>
<p>Apple has since <a href="http://www.apple.com/ipodtouch/features/more-features.html">updated the images on its website</a>, but it's good to know that not even Apple's copywriters get their hands on the devices before we do. At long last, we have (unofficial) launch dates for the iPhone 4 in Korea and Taiwan. </p>
<p>In Korea, <a href="http://www.tuaw.com/2010/08/16/iphone-4-pre-orders-about-to-begin-in-south-korea/">pre-orders began last month</a> despite the lack of an official launch date. <a href="http://www.macnn.com/articles/10/09/06/taiwanese.date.may.sync.with.china/">According to MacNN</a>, distributor KT Corporation has announced that the iPhone 4 will hit store shelves on September 10th. KT's official site is a bit confusing, though; <a href="http://www.kt.com/eng/pr/news_view.jsp">a news post</a> says "October" in the headline and simply "September" in the body of the post. But that could be a translation error.</p>
<p>Meanwhile, Taiwan channels are reporting that the iPhone 4 will go on sale in that country on September 15th. Demand has been huge in Taiwan, where eager customers have reportedly placed 150,000 pre-orders since August. </p>

A team of talent from MIT has put its head down in order to concoct a new Android application that can come darn close to solving complex computational problems in just a fraction of the time that it'd take a bona fide supercomputer. The goal here is to let researchers and scientists convert to Google's mobile OS, but if you aren't falling for that one, it's also designed to "let engineers perform complicated calculations in the field, and to better control systems for vehicles or robotic systems." Of course, the models that are hosted on the phone do require a supercomputer to create, but once certain formulas are embedded, the app can then compute approximations in mere seconds rather than hours. Now, with iPhone 4, the camera quality is up, and people seem to be using it more and more for pictures they want to keep instead of casual snaps.</p>
<p>A pro group of photographers, the <a href="http://acmp.com.au/">ACMP</a> (Australian Commercial and Media Photographers) ran a competition soliciting photos taken with an iPhone. The requirement was that the entrants use the <a href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/hipstamatic/id342115564?mt=8">Hipstamatic</a> app to acquire the images, and that no further image manipulation could be applied. Hipstamatic emulates old styles of analog photography, along with classic lens emulations and different film characteristics. The app is US $1.99.</p>

Here's a great and super-simple mod that turns an <a href="http://crabfuartworks.blogspot.com/2010/09/crabfu-5-iphone-microscope-mod.html">iPhone 4 into a portable digital microscope</a>. Using an <a href="http://www.amazon.com/SE-Mini-45X-Microscope-Illuminator/dp/B002E0MU70/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=office-products&qid=1283787862&sr=8-1">inexpensive microscope</a> found on Amazon (seven bucks as of this writing), an iPhone case and some superglue, this user has hacked together a stable, portable digital microscope that also takes pictures.</p>
<p>The iPhone's flat back makes attaching the microscope super easy. After getting it glued to the case, simply snap it onto the iPhone and start observing things close up! For bonus points, pair the iPhone with <a href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/bluecam-premium-edition/id367853780?mt=8">BlueCam for iPad</a>, which feeds an iPhone 4's live video stream to an iPad via Bluetooth for big-screen observations.</p>

<p>Last week alone saw ViewSonic, Toshiba and Samsung all officially unveil new models of keyboard-less computer, with a mish-mash of operating systems and screen sizes hoping to somehow build themselves a market in the wake of Apple's market-leading device.</p>

The only remaining links (profile, replies, direct messages and log out) are represented by small icons at the top of the page. Additionally, there are no pop-up hover tips or lists. Boy it looks nice.</p>
<p>It's certainly not for everyone. Like I said, the groups, lists, trending topics, etc. that typically populate the page are gone. If you use those things, don't install the plug-in. However, if you like the clean simplicity as I do, you should definitely check it out.</p>

Although the full price may be significantly more expensive than the iPad -- $900 or more -- executive Hankil Yoon told the WSJ that the price would be no higher than $300 but likely above $200. Discussions are underway with US carriers, but Yoon wouldn't say which and expected the price to vary....<br clear="both" /><br />

One post that was of particular interest to me was David Beach's article from last week about developing for Android. Beach, who is a product manager at eBay Mobile and a co-founder of 12seconds, basically says that the experience sucks for a number of reasons (all of which Google can fix, but will take quite a bit of work and time). But one quote in particular stuck out to me:<br />
Android has succeeded despite Google. In fact it's safe to say that Android is successful for one primary reason. The iPhone is only available on AT&T. If the iPhone was on Verizon a year ago. Android would be no where near as popular.<br />
Obviously, Beach isn't the first person to bring this idea up. <p>I planned to show the photographs on my MacBook, which has recently been refurbished, but hasn't had iPhoto reinstalled on it. Running late, I didn't have time to install it as planned. As a last resort, I thought I'd just show the photos using <a href="http://www.tuaw.com/tag/QuickLook/">Quick Look </a>and scroll through them in full screen. </p>
<p>When I eventually got round to showing off my photos (you know, that rather drowsy time just after dinner), I realized that Quick Look won't let you scroll through items when in full screen, let alone do a slideshow (which would be pretty useful). However, you can resize the Quick Look window to almost full screen. </p>

<div class="field-content"><div class="body-row" id="body-row-207237"><div style="background:#F5F5F5;"><p>Early reports indicate Europe will pay a pretty penny for Samsung's Galaxy Tab, but the 7-inch tablet may cost a good bit less when it comes to US shores -- the Wall Street Journal paraphrases a Samsung executive who claims it could run between $200 and $300 depending on the all-important carrier subsidies. The Korea Times, meanwhile, suggests a $300 to $400 retail price according to a different Samsung bigwig, who added that the Tab "will cost slightly more than the Galaxy S smartphone." As you're probably aware, Sammy's Galaxy S typically retails for about $200 in the US -- excepting Sprint's Epic 4G at $250 -- so if you held a bursting Li-ion battery to our head and forced us to guess, we'd say the latter range of dollar signs is far more likely. </p>

We are seeing a high level of investigative journalism, asthe New York Times calls it, that is within reach of the whole world. He also said that the Internet is, the most powerful weapon that has existed.<br />
Castro, however, isnt just an Internet consumer hes also apparently a prolific blogger (one of about 300 in Cuba). So now you know.<br />

Sharp-eyed reader Matthew Fern snapped this shot of <a href="http://tuaw.com/tag/parallels">Parallels Desktop 6</a> already on sale at Fry's Electronics in Roseville, CA.</p>

The analytics firm reckons a full one-quarter of mobile web traffic stateside comes from devices running Google's OS, though it's important to know that the iOS tallies apparently don't include the web-friendly iPad. You also might want to note that this is mobile web traffic here -- these days, we spend an increasing amount of our internet time in apps -- and since we're on a roll with the disclaimers, let's just add that these numbers have nothing to do with a company's financial success. The U.S. site continues to say "Coming Soon," but we'll assume that rather than making two mistakes (posting a date, and posting a wrong date) that the Sept. 8 is correct.
