Since I got my new <a href="http://www.tuaw.com/tag/iPhone4/">iPhone 4</a> a few weeks back, I've been playing more games than ever on Apple's little handheld. I just recently got back into Ngmoco's <a href="http://werule.ngmoco.com/">We Rule</a>. It's probably the pinnacle of the "freemium" genre on the iPhone so far. It's free to play, very social, and very much based on timed "check-ins," where you set crops to grow and then come back in a few hours to harvest them. It puts in little blips of gameplay that move you towards a larger progress goal.</p>
<p>The only problem is that We Rule isn't all that fun; it's a bunch of clicking and grinding. So, lately I've been wondering when someone would add a <em>fun</em> freemium game to the App Store. It would have to be something that was social and progressive and all that that entails, but it would also need to have a game component that was actually fun to play.</p>

<p>Apple announced on Monday that it will be releasing the Wi-Fi models of the iPad in China on Friday, September 17th. The iPads will be available from Apple Stores and selected Apple Authorized Resellers in the country, starting at 10:00 a.m. local time.</p>

<p>Squatting on app names in Apple's App Store has, until now, been rather simple to pull off. After an initial $99 fee, any person could reserve as many application names as they wanted with no fear of repercussions. Apple has changed that with a new policy, and has now <a href="http://techcrunch.com/2010/09/10/app-store-name-squatters/">apparently begun to enforce it</a>.</p>

<a href="http://www.yorkregion.com/news/article/872490--hundreds-camp-out-as-apple-store-opens">Here's a local report</a> from Newmarket, Ontario in Canada, where Apple opened up <a href="https://ssl.apple.com/ca/retail/uppercanadamall/map/">a brand new store</a> at the Upper Canada Mall over the weekend. Apparently hundreds of people were in line for the opening on Saturday morning, trying to get the <a href="http://www.tuaw.com/tag/iPhone4/">iPhone 4</a> as well as all of the new iPod devices. Everybody involved sounds pretty happy, from the people who got in line starting at 4:30am, to the manager of the new store and the landlord in the mall itself. The CBS News app features an easy to use interface that includes stories, images, videos, and even various CBS News Twitter feeds.</p>
<p>Like much of TV news, there is a lot of stuff, but not much depth. Stories usually run just a few paragraphs, but sometimes there is some more welcome detail.</p>
<p>Many of the videos are from CBS owned <a href="http://cnettv.cnet.com/?tag=hdr;brandnav">CNET</a>, but they are tech specific and appear to be there as filler. There is no local news, other than your local temperature, and every time you quit the app and come back in, you have to tell the app to use your local location. That's just dumb.</p>

Given that I had told iTunes to update all of the 60+ apps it told me were out of date, this was hardly helpful.</p>
<p>There are a lot of things wrong with this error message. First of all, it gives me absolutely no idea which app is not available. Second, I had asked iTunes which apps needed to be updated, and it told me that this Mystery App was out of date. How can it be out of date if it isn't available at all? Third, after telling me that this one application wasn't available, iTunes failed to update the other 60+ applications.</p>

But there turns out to be a type of game that is known to boost a variety of skills, from decision making to tracking multiple objects: standard action games. A study, released today by Current Biology attempts to explain how these video games can produce such wide-ranging improvements.</p>
<p>The authors of the study argue that the root of all these tasks involves making a probabilistic inference, where complete information is missing, so people have to make a best guess based on known odds. Video gaming, in their view, increases the efficiency at which people can process the odds and make an accurate decisiongamers simply can do more with less.
