<br /><br /><br />
iStat appears to have a memory leak where over time, the REAL memory used by SystemUIServer grows basically without bound. Memory usage that should be around 40MB balloons to 300MB then to 1.3GB over a few weeks of never rebooting. This would be bad enough if it was the virtual address space that was being used up this way, but this is real memory, causing real memory pressure and real swapping.<br />
<br /><br /><br />
Obviously the ideal would be for Bjango to get on the case and fix this bug. Since they appear unwilling to do so, I have come up with a workaround.<br />

Windows 7 shows previews of open windows when you point your mouse at an application. I found an inexpensive application that adds this to the Mac; here's how to set it up effectively. It does require 10.6 or higher to run.<br />
First of all, download the <a href="http://kapeli.com/dockview/">DockView</a> application from Kapeli. There's a free trial available. Just copy it into your Applications folder and run it. It will put up a menu that you can use to configure and manage the program. It seems to work pretty well by default, but there are some annoyances that can be easily fixed. The window previews will display in both the Dock and in the Application Switcher (Cmd+Tab) by putting the pointer over the application icon.<br />

<p>While it’s hard to say if Apple can help save the overall publishing industry, it appears to be doing its part to try. Per <a href="http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2010-09-17/apple-said-to-negotiate-with-publishers-over-digital-newsstand-for-ipad.html">Bloomberg</a>, the company is rumored to be creating a new digital storefront for newspapers and magazines that, like iBooks does for print books, will serve as a standalone iPad app for purchasing repurposed print content.</p>

Incoming mail fails to sound a beep, so you finally get a look at mail and see dozens of emails have come in while the Mac remains mute. The attacks were made in response to anti-piracy measures taken by both organizations.4chan users (particularly Anonymous) have been responsible for several attacks against other sites in the past, including Gawker, YouTube and Twitter. This time around, they used Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks, which overwhelm websites with a flurry of requests that would be harmless if they were coming in reasonable numbers or from just one source.The attacks were made by at least hundreds (and possibly thousands) or users at once, most of them using a simple application called Low Orbit Ion Cannon (LOIC) if that doesnt tell you how geeky this crowd is, were not sure what will.Aiplex was the first target. 'The Justice Department would have to convince a court not just that such accords existed, but that workers had suffered significant harm as a result. The companies may not want to take a chance in court. If the government wins, it could open the floodgates for private claimants, even a class action by employees. A settlement would allow the Justice Department to halt the practice, without the companies having to admit to any legal violations.'"

The government is considering accusing the companies of agreeing to not hire each others' employees for a certain period of time. If, as a law professor tells the Journal, the government finds that these companies are actually agreeing to not poach, then employees could be hurt by not having access to the best deal available.</p>

Its clear that Google are on a massive push to acquire users for its browser in its battle with Firefox, Safari and IE and although I have seen adverts for Chrome in all sorts of innovative places the last place in the world I expected to see them was on Facebook. I wonder how Microsoft (an investor in Facebook with a strategic partnership) feels about these ads given they would be one of the main competitors in the browser wars.<br />
Id have to think that this is a bit of a PR blunder from Google and Im also surprised that the ads were approved by Facebook but I guess the only way of looking at it is that Facebook reckons Googles money is any good as anybodies. Providing a front end to the Google Voice service, GV Connect allows users of devices running Apple iOS platform to have a native app with which to interact with Google Voice. What will be interesting to note is the order that these apps are approved in. I know Sean Kovacs was first out with GV Mobile back before Apple banned Google Voice, and while he is in the approval pipeline, this other app has some first mover advantage. Although my Apple addiction usually means that I have to run out and buy whatever new shiny thing has flown out of Cupertino, I've been able to resist getting one of the new <a href="http://tuaw.com/tag/ipodnano">iPod nanos</a>. My iPhone plays music and movies, and I don't wear <a href="http://www.tuaw.com/2010/09/13/apple-spawns-new-accessory-line-nano-watch-straps/">watches</a>, so I really haven't been impressed.</p>

If you've heard of <a href="http://www.google.com/webhp?hl=en&output=html">Google's instant search</a>, then you'll be right at home with <a href="http://labs.stephenou.com/itunes">iTunes Instant</a>. We're all aware that iTunes doesn't have the most friendly of search engines, but thanks to youthful developer <a href="http://twitter.com/stephenou">Stephen Ou</a>, searching the iTunes store just got a whole lot easier. </p>
<p>iTunes Instant doesn't just give you suggestions or recommendations as you type in a search query, it actually gives you real-time search feedback (album and artwork in this case) as you enter a query, character by character. Possibly the best thing about iTunes Instant is that it's the work of Ou, a 15-year old based in the Bay Area in California. According to <a href="http://www.theiloop.com/itunes-instant-smarter-way-to-search-music/"><em>TheiLoop</em></a>, Ou developed iTunes Instant in under three hours, using Apple's own Search API. </p>

But a lawsuit filed by Skyhook Wireless, a firm that turns Wi-Fi signals into geographic coordinates for mobile devices, alleges that Google pressures handset makers by threatening to withhold access to the Android app marketplace, use of the phrase "Android-compatible," and full access to Google apps on the phone. Skyhook says Google forced Motorola and another phone maker to break deals or risk those losses.

Livebloggers, rejoice! <a href="http://justin.tv">Justin.TV</a>, one of the world's most popular live video streaming services, has <a href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/justin-tv/id358612216?mt=8">released its new app</a> for the <a href="http://www.tuaw.com/tag/iPhone/">iPhone</a> and <a href="http://www.tuaw.com/tag/iPod/">iPod</a> touch in the form of an upgrade that enables live video to stream from the device. Both the app and service are free, but the app only works on devices with a camera. Streaming is done over WiFi or 3G, depending on availability.</p>

<p>Only the Wi-Fi models are on sale so far, 5588 yuan (US $826) for 64gb, 4788 yuan ($712) and 3988 yuan ($590) for 16gb. iPads have been available in China so far only through the "gray market," unauthorized resellers from other countries.
