<p>According to the report, among operating systems, Mac OS X had 5.03% of the global market share in September, compared to 5% in June (that's global market share; in the US it's almost 10%). Windows remains dominant with 91.08% as of September. That's up from from 91.34% in August. Apple's highest percentage previously was 5.27% in October 2009.</p>
<p>When it comes to browsers, Safari had 5.27% in September compared to 5.16% in August, while Internet Explorer had 59.65% Firefox had 22.96% and Chrome had 7.98%. That compares to, respectively, August percentages of 60.40%, 22.93% and 7.52%, for the browsers. </p>

However, the "blowback" from this attack may be unexpected catastrophic manmade industrial disasters down the line. Most experts think the target of Stuxnet has already been hit, and we are now seeing the collateral damage. We do know there was some sort of "accident" that hit the uranium enrichment facility that the Iranians are not talking about.</p>

And, no, I'm not going to reiterate my plea for Blu-ray playback (well, okay, just briefly -- please, Steve). Instead I'd like to call for improved speakers and an even better display.</p>
<p>The downward firing speakers in the all-in-one iMac are decent 2.1 speakers. However, Apple could do better. I don't really like comparing a Mac to a PC, but I think Acer may be onto something with the audio system in its new Aspire AZ3100-U3072 -- is that a boring moniker or what? -- which sports high-def 5.1 channel audio and a display with true 1080p resolution.

The Acer system is only US$599. Surely, those are features that Apple can add to a machine that costs more (but is certainly worth the moolah). </p>

I have not found a list of parts norApple's part costs and assembly estimate, but as with the original AppleTV there may not be much profit in them. It is very common for companies selling video content delivery devices to sell them at a loss to get their "box" in our living rooms. They bet on the long-term profit of selling content and are willing to take a hit on the device up front. My Apple TV device is on the way from China and as of this morning is at the FedEx facility in Anchorage, Alaska.  </p>

<p>The Pew Research people have confirmed what everyone in the tech news industry already knew: Apple hogs the tech news space. Mainstream news commonly has stories about Apple products or goings on. As Apple has risen in the last few months to be the second most highly valued company in the world, every peep out of Steve Jobs' mouth has been tech head lines.</p>
<p>According to the research on the amount of press different companies get, Apple leads the pack by a wide margin. Google comes in second, with Microsoft getting only one-fifth the press space as Apple. Further, most of the Apple news has been positive. Even when "Antennagate" blew up, the press was still pretty forgiving and covered the news on the issue with breathless anticipation.  The entire time, Apple was selling the iPhone 4 as faster than they could make them.</p>

<p>This is, of course, the same NBC that repeatedly refuses to place content on iTunes. While I'm sure this isn't the only -- or even the main issue -- it is certainly indicative of bad decision making. Kind of makes you wonder, doesn't it?</p>

<p>The user data collected by some iOS apps can be correlated to real-world identities, posing a privacy risk to iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad users. According to research from Bucknell University, a majority of iOS apps transmit user data back to their own servers. But because some store more info than others—and in some cases, in plaintext—it can be easily pieced together to reveal more about individual users than they bargained for. </p>

The HDR technique blends two or more exposures to capture better dynamic range in difficult lighting conditions. Apple provided some <a href="http://www.apple.com/iphone/features/camera.html">competition</a> by building in HDR with the release of the iPhone 4 and iOS 4.1, but I still like the control that Pro HDR gives me both before and after the pictures are taken.</p>
<p>One of the big drawbacks to Pro HDR is that the location metadata and other picture information was not saved in the combined image, so location and other <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Exchangeable_image_file_format">EXIF</a> data was not available. That meant the '<a href="http://www.apple.com/findouthow/photos/#places">Places</a>' feature from Apple wouldn't work. Given his legendary fussiness over every detail and his frustrating inability to get the <a href="http://www.tuaw.com/tag/NeXT/" bitly="BITLY_PROCESSED">NeXT</a> hardware platform past the 'expensive curiosity' stage, Stross surmises that Jobs learned painful lessons about delegation and collaboration during his years at NeXT. When he returned to Apple (along with the NeXTStep operating system that formed the core of Mac OS X), he was far more ready to handle the challenge.</p>

However it introduced a significant problem with volume over Bluetooth. Any audio from the iPhone over Bluetooth is very low, to the point of being inaudible, even with volume turned to max on the Bluetooth device and the Bluetooth volume on maximum on the iPhone.<br />

After much discussion over many threads at the Apple support boards, a number of 'fixes' were found but most of them resulted in temporary resolution. While I use Time Machine I also clone my MacBook drive weekly to an offsite backup. I need to log out of my normal FileVault enabled account to do this.<br />

This week Carbon Copy Cloner completed the clone but reported an error. I looked at the log and it reported that it was having an input/output error on my FileVault sparsebundle. I ran Disk Utility's First Aid on my MacBook and backup disk and both passed. I then tried to mount the sparsebundle, which worked, and then ran First Aid on its volume. It also passed.<br />
<br /><br /><br />
Thus the first hint, Carbon Copy Cloner (and the rsync utility it uses) can identify disk issues that First Aid and Time Machine miss/ignore.<br />

While I use Time Machine I also clone my MacBook drive weekly to an offsite backup. I need to log out of my normal FileVault enabled account to do this.<br />

This week Carbon Copy Cloner completed the clone but reported an error. I looked at the log and it reported that it was having an input/output error on my FileVault sparsebundle. I ran Disk Utility's First Aid on my MacBook and backup disk and both passed. I then tried to mount the sparsebundle, which worked, and then ran First Aid on its volume. It also passed.<br />
<br /><br /><br />
Thus the first hint, Carbon Copy Cloner (and the rsync utility it uses) can identify disk issues that First Aid and Time Machine miss/ignore.<br />
