MACROMEDIA TIGHTENS INTEGRATION OF MACROMEDIA FLASH IN MICROSOFT INTERNET
EXPLORER

Microsoft includes Macromedia Flash and Shockwave Players to enable rich
media applications

Microsoft Professional Developers Conference Orlando, Florida July 12, 2000
Macromedia, Inc. (NASDAQ: MACR), the leading provider of solutions for
compelling and effective Web sites, today announced the most comprehensive
integration between the Macromedia Flash Player and a Web browser with
todays release of Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.5. At a keynote this
morning, Microsoft Chairman and Chief Software Architect Bill Gates
demonstrated new functionality in Internet Explorer 5.5 that for the first
time enables developers to manipulate rich media Macromedia Flash
components on a Web page using custom Extensible Markup Language (XML)
tags. This integration enables developers who are not familiar with the
Macromedia Flash authoring environment to easily design pages and
applications that have rich Macromedia Flash interfaces and dynamically
update based on user interaction. Macromedia Flash is the standard for
high-impact, vector-based Web sites that deliver motion, sound,
interactivity, and graphics.

The deep integration of Macromedias rich media technology with Microsoft
platforms builds on the long-standing relationship between both companies.
This marks the fourth year that Microsoft Corp. will include the Macromedia
Flash and Shockwave Players with its Internet Explorer technologies in
Windows.

Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.5 provides Macromedia developers with a
great open platform on which to build real-world, high-end Internet
applications, said Tom Hale, senior vice president of product marketing
for Macromedia. By working closely with Microsoft, Macromedia enables our
combined developer communities to better take advantage of the Internet
Explorer platform with powerful rich media. Microsoft built Internet
Explorer 5.5 so that third parties can build specialized components to meet
their business needs, said Chris Jones, vice president of the Windows
Client Team at Microsoft. We are excited to have Macromedia showcasing the
ways developers can extend our platform.

Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.5 contains new features that will benefit
Macromedia Flash developers including ViewLink and new rendering
application programming interfaces (API). ViewLinking is part of the
next-generation of Behaviors technology first introduced in Internet
Explorer 5.0. ViewLinking and Behaviors enable developers to implement
Macromedia Flash content using pre-defined XML tags to place and control
rich-media content within all the other content on a Web page. The
rendering engine in Internet Explorer 5.5 and a future version of the
Macromedia Flash Player will allow HTML, Macromedia Flash (SWF), and other
Web formats to be intermixed and layered within a Web page. Macromedia is
also committed to tightly integrating the Macromedia Flash components with
its Macromedia Dreamweaver Web development platform.

During the keynote, Macromedia Flash content was demonstrated through a
human resources application that displayed organizational charts, bar
charts, pie charts, and calendars that could all be updated directly from
the Web page due to the rich integration possible between the Macromedia
Flash content and Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.5. The keynote provided a
powerful showcase for enterprise uses of Macromedia Flash for the robust
display of corporate information. All of these examples are available as
part of the Macromedia Flash Enterprise Kit for Internet Explorer 5.5. The
kit provides examples and documentation on how to use Macromedia Flash with
the new features in Internet Explorer 5.5 and is available now on the
Macromedia Web site.

Macromedia Flash is the leading technology for delivering high-impact,
vector-based Web content. More than 248 million online users, or 92 percent
of people online, can immediately view Macromedia Flash content without
having to download a player. Leading companies such as Microsoft,
Coca-Cola, Tiffany, Lexus, and Disney use Macromedia Flash to uniquely
brand their online presence. Macromedia Shockwave Player is the Web
standard for entertaining, engaging, rich-media playback, and is deployed
on more than 51 percent of Web browsers.
