OCR: EARDRUM YOUR EARDRUM or tympanic membrane, is a piece of skin stretched across the inner end of your outer ear pa ssage It is about 1 cm (1/2 inch) in diameter, and separates your outer ear from your middle ear. IS so thin that it almost transparent, and is highly sensitive to pain as a defence against damage. When sound waves travel along your ear passage, the ea rdrum vibrates.
