When you work with layers, it's important to keep on eye on the status line.

Notice that when an object is selected, the status line tells you that the selected object is on something. That "something" refers to a layer name.

Layers can be edited so that you may customize your work area. You can make a layer Visible..., Printable..., Locked...

or you can assign a display color to it. You can also set these options for all pages. Desktop is a master layer that resides outside the printable page.

In the Layers Roll-Up you can re-order these layers by pressing and dragging the layer name to a new location and that will also re-order the drawing to correspond.

When that hasn't happened, as in the case of our light fixture that wound up on the Appliance layer, all you have to do is select the object, ...select "Move To..." from the flyout ...then click on the correct layer.
