  1.             Thank you for playing the Demo Version of
  2.               FREDDY PHARKAS, FRONTIER PHARMACIST!
  3.  
  4. There are one or two things you should know before you play.
  5. Actually more like five or six.  Okay, ten.
  6.  
  7. 1.   Got a problem?  Blame your hardware.
  8.  
  9. 2.   The requirements to install and run the demo:
  10.  
  11.      A 286/16mhz MS-DOS compatible machine w/VGA or EGA display,
  12.      and a hard drive.  We recommend at least a 386/16mhz or
  13.      faster.
  14.  
  15.      At least 570K of free low memory.  (This translates to about
  16.      583,000 bytes.  No, we don't know why.) The more memory you 
  17.      have, the better the demo will run.  If you're having trouble 
  18.      freeing up this much low memory, let the Install program 
  19.      create a boot disk for you.
  20.  
  21.      We also highly recommend a Microsoft-compatible mouse.
  22.  
  23. 3.   The demo will run in Windows only as a DOS application.  For
  24. maximum speed and to prevent errors from occurring with sound 
  25. devices, we highly recommend that you play this demo from DOS, 
  26. not in a DOS window.  The full FREDDY PHARKAS game, when released, 
  27. will run as a true Windows application with sizeable windows 
  28. and stuff like that there.
  29.  
  30.       If, for some inexplicable reason, you feel compelled to run
  31. this demo in a DOS Window, we have supplied an FPDEMO.PIF file and
  32. a FREDDEMO.ICO icon file for your convenience.  Consult your Windows
  33. documentation for instruction on installing a DOS application with 
  34. Windows, being sure to use the FPDEMO.PIF file.
  35.  
  36. 4.   Each cursor has what's called a "hot spot."  This hot spot 
  37. is the active portion of the cursor and needs to be used to "aim" 
  38. your action while you're playing.  The icon bar cursors (boot, 
  39. hand, glasses, etc.) each have a SMALL RED DOT to show you where 
  40. the hot spot is.  With the inventory item cursors, you'll have to 
  41. experiment.  Let it be a challenge to you!

  43. 5.   The demo doesn't allow you to save or restore games.  The real
  44. game does. 
  45.  
  46. 6.   The interactive portion of the demo is on a TIMER.  If you do
  47. not give any commands to the demo for TWO MINUTES, it will
  48. automatically go to the BALLAD without saving your position or
  49. anything!  Surprise!
  50.  
  51. You can, however, pause the interactive portion of the demo simply by
  52. placing the cursor at the top of the screen so that the icon bar is
  53. activated.  The timer turns off when the icon bar is active.
  54.  
  55. 7.    The RIGHT MOUSE button can be used to skip conversations or 
  56. text.  But be careful; the text, including dialogue, can contain 
  57. crucial information or clues.
  58.  
  59. 8.    If you successfully complete the demo, Whittlin' Willie 
  60. (the narrator) gives you 49 out of 50 points.  THIS IS A JOKE!  
  61. There are NO points in the demo, and subsequently there's no 
  62. way to get 50 out of 50.
  63.      
  64. Why did we tell you this?  Simple.  Because there's a saying:
  65. "Nobody reads the README file."  Well, obviously YOU are the
  66. one glorious exception to the rule, so we're rewarding you by 
  67. saving you the trouble of hunting endlessly for the missing 1
  68. point.

  85. 10.  Although this demo was designed to be run from the menu
  86. system provided on the CD, it is also a standalone runnable
  87. product.  Simply type DEMO from within this subdirectory.  
  88.  
  89. If you have not originally configured this product, you will enter
  90. the Install program to configure the demo.  This will create a
  91. file in the directory C:\SIERRA\DEMOCD.  This directory MUST exist
  92. on your hard drive for Install to work properly.  This directory
  93. is created the first time you run the DEMO Menu System (by typing
  94. DEMO from the root directory of this CD-ROM.) Alternately, you can
  95. create the C:\SIERRA\DEMOCD subdirectory manually.

  97. Once configured, typing DEMO will start the demo program.  To make
  98. any subsequent changes to the configuration, type INSTALL from
  99. within this demo subdirectory.
