Title: Nixon Tapes, The
Author: Various
Date: 1974
April 15, 1973. (8:25pm - 8:26pm)
Telephone conversation: President Nixon and Henry Petersen
Pres. Nixon: Hello.
Operator: I have Mr. Petersen.
Pres. Nixon: Hello.
H. Peterson: Yes, sir, Mr. President.
Pres. Nixon: I am trying to reach Dean - I think I may be able to get him, I
hope. He seems to be in transit from someplace to someplace.
But I will report to you after I see him.
H. Peterson: Very good.
Pres. Nixon: In the meantime, on Liddy - I don't know the man, of course, and
have no control over him, but, hell, you are to tell him the
President wants everybody involved in this to tell everything
they know. Ok?
H. Peterson: Indeed so. I will get in touch with his lawyer first thing in
the morning.
Pres. Nixon: You might do it tonight.
H. Peterson: Very good.
Pres. Nixon: I don't want to stall around. Ok?
H. Peterson: Very good.
Pres. Nixon: Don't you think that is the best thing to do?
H. Peterson: Indeed so.
Pres. Nixon: Fine. One thing I want to be sure of Henry; you understand as
far as Liddy is concerned I have no control over him - don't
know the man at all and I just want, since he has raised the
question, that maybe not talking because of me -
H. Peterson: No, no - I don't want to leave that impression.
Pres. Nixon: Because of Mitchell, huh?
H. Peterson: He is taking orders from higher authority. The decision is mine
but since you are the highest authority he will stand in line
if we handle it discreetly.
Pres. Nixon: I just want him to be sure to understand that as far as the
President is concerned everybody in this case is to talk and to
tell the truth. You are to tell everybody, and you don't even
have to call me on that with anybody. You just say those are
your orders.
H. Peterson: Yes, Sir.
Pres. Nixon: Ok.
H. Peterson: Alright, thank you, sir.
