ABOUT THIS DOCUMENTATION
The following is excerpted from the BackEZ Release 4 manual. It is not
intended to provide complete documentation of the features and
facilities of BackEZ. Just an introduction to the various components
and capabilities so that the potential registered user can verify that
the software will provide the capabilities looked for in a
backup/restore utility.
For more complete documentation, please register BackEZ and receive the
BackEZ USER MANUAL in printed and bound form along with the most
recent version.
INTRODUCTION
BackEZ is a high-speed hard disk backup and restore utility designed to
quickly and reliably transfer important data from your hard disk to
another device for safekeeping. BackEZ was created to provide a low
cost alternative to expensive storage management products.
BackEZ provides a direct replacement for the DOS BACKUP and RESTORE
commands, providing fast and inexpensive disaster insurance for anyone
who uses a hard disk.
BackEZ is also a unique tool for computer users who need to copy and
distribute large amounts of data. BackEZ transfers data faster than
the DOS COPY command, and automatically segments files that are larger
than the output media. Because BackEZ produces an exact duplicate of
the original data, no special programs are needed to restore or use the
data.
BackEZ takes less than fifteen minutes to backup 20MB of hard disk
files to floppy disks and is even faster when backing up to large
output devices.
When your hard disk fails, you'll forget all about those "quick and
easy" backups. You will want to safely and reliably restore your
valuable data. The developers of BackEZ know that the real purpose of
a backup utility is TOTAL RESTORE.
Unlike DOS'S BACKUP, and most other backup products, your backup files
and directories are identical to the originals. No special program is
needed to restore or use the backup data. (BackEZ's restore function
speeds and automates the process, but you may also manually restore
files using the DOS COPY command.)
BackEZ works with virtually every DOS-COMPATIBLE storage device,
including floppy disks, hard disks, cartridge drives, and "floppy
tape" drives.
Files that are larger than the output media are automatically
segmented. You can easily copy a large database to several floppy
disks, then put it back together using either BackEZ or the DOS COPY
command.
If you run out of formatted output media, just press <F9> to format the
media during the backup.
BackEZ is command compatible with the DOS BACKUP command. The same
batch files that you use now with DOS will also work with BackEZ.
BackEZ lets you select files by any combination of name, creation date,
files size, and modified status. Further, BackEZ offers Script File
capabilities to fully automate your backup process.
BackEZ's on-line help facility is just a keystroke away. Anytime you
need a quick reminder or have questions about an error, press <F1> for
a helpful message.
BEFORE YOU START
You will require the following BackEZ files:
BACKEZ.EXE - the BackEZ program
BACKEZ.001 - the backup function
BACKEZ.002 - the restore function
BACKEZ.003 - the configuration function
BACKEZ.HLP - the Help file
BACKEZ.CMD - a sample Script File
Optionally:
FULL.BAT - a sample batch file
MOD.BAT - another sample batch file
FULL.BAT - yet another batch file
BASICS
STARTING BACKEZ
After you have located, installed or copied the BackEZ programs and
files, just type the word "BACKEZ" from the DOS command line.
STOPPING BACKEZ
Press the Escape key <Esc> at any time to stop the current command or
menu, or to exit BackEZ. If device access is in progress, BackEZ will
not stop until the access is completed.
GETTING HELP
Press the Help Key <F1> any time you need help with BackEZ. A help
window will open to provide you with information about the current
command or error message.
FIRST TIME INSTALL
The first time you execute BackEZ, an introduction menu opens. You
will need to answer a few simple questions regarding your hardware
configuration. Simply follow the on-screen prompts and answer each
question. If you need help press the <F1> key.
BackEZ saves your answers in a file name BACKEZ.PRM in the directory
that you started BackEZ from. Each time you run BackEZ, it uses the
settings stored in this file.
MAIN MENU
There are two ways to select a command from a menu. One way is to use
the arrow keys to highlight the command that you wish then press
<Enter>. The other way is to simply type the first letter of the
command.
From the MAIN MENU the following commands are available:
BACKUP - displays the BACKUP MENU
RESTORE - displays the RESTORE MENU
CONFIGURE - displays the CONFIGURATION MENU
HELP - displays the current HELP
QUIT - exits to DOS
QUICK START
This section will show the basic steps to performing full and partial
backups. Refer to sections 4 and 5 in the users manual for more
complete information.
FULL BACKUP
Follow these simple steps to fully backup your hard disk:
Step 1 From the Main menu press <B> to display the Backup menu.
Step 2 The FROM window displays the current drive to be backed
up. (ie: "C:\*.*") Press <F> to change the drive letter
if it is not the correct drive.
Step 3 Press <T> to set the TO window to the desired output
device. (ie: "B:" for diskette drive B:)
Step 4 Press <A> to begin the backup operation. The Backup
Processing window opens and BackEZ searches the hard
disk for files to backup. BackEZ tallies the number of
bytes, directories and files to backup in the SELECTED
window. The estimated number of output volumes and
estimated elapsed time are displayed in the ESTIMATED
window.
Step 5 When all files are selected, the INSERT window opens and
asks you to insert an output volume in the TO drive.
Step 6 If there are no files on the output volume, BackEZ begins
backing up immediately. If the volume contains data, the
ERASE window opens and asks you whether you want to <A>dd
backup data to volume, <E>rase the volume, <R>emove the
volume or <V>iew the contents. Type the highlighted
letter of your choice.
As BackEZ progresses, the progress statistics are tallied
in the PROCESSING and PROCESSED windows.
As backup volumes are filled, BackEZ will again prompt
for another output volume.
If an error occurs during the backup an ERROR window will
open in the upper right corner of the screen with a
brief description of the error. If you do not understand
the error, further information about the error and possible
solutions may be obtained from Help <F1>.
Step 7 When the gauge reads Full, the message BACKUP COMPLETE will
be displayed. Press any key to return to the Main menu.
PARTIAL BACKUP
To backup specific subdirectories or files follow these simple steps:
Step 1 From the Main menu, press <B> to display the Backup menu.
Step 2 Press <F> to enter the name of the directory or file that
you want to backup in the FROM window. You can use the DOS
wildcards (* and ?) to include multiple files.

PROCESSING window opens, with the INSERT window, asking for
an input volume in the FROM drive.
Step 5 Insert the requested backup volume in the drive or type a
new drive letter, then press <Enter>.
Step 6 BackEZ begins restoring you files and directories. The
PROCESSING and PROCESSED windows tally directory and file
statistics as the restore progresses.
Step 7 After each volume is restored, you a prompted for the next
volume. Insert each volume until the message RESTORE
COMPLETE is displayed. Press any key to return to the Main
menu.
PARTIAL RESTORE

CONFIGURATION
Press <C> from the Main menu to display the Configuration menu.
The display area shows 3 windows, the Log Settings, Format Settings,
and Device Settings. Each window contains configuration selections for
the particular topic.
The following commands are available from the Configuration menu:
SAVE
After configuration variables have been altered and you want to
permanently use the set, use <S> to save the settings in the
BACKEZ.PRM file.
LOG
These settings control the level of the reporting functions within
BackEZ. Press <L> from the Configuration menu and the following
commands will be available:
LOGGING
LONG - Maintains complete file recording of all files
and directories backed up.
SHORT - Maintains a log of backup summaries.
NONE - BACKEZ.LOG is neither created nor maintained.
NAME - Defines the drive, path and filename of the BACKEZ.LOG
file.
BIL - This setting is combined with the INCREMENT to form the
Backup Identification Label (BIL). The BIL becomes the
root directory on the output volumes and is used to
keep track of your backups.
INCREMENT - An integer number that is incremented with each backup
and is combined with BIL to form an identification of
individual backups. This method allows BackEZ to keep
several backups on the same output volume.
TYPE OF FORMATTING
BackEZ provides two methods of formatting output media. Both
methods produce the same result, however the WRITE method both
formats and writes at the same time and therefore is much
faster.
WRITE - (With Fast diskette I/O - YES) - diskettes are formatted
and written at the same time.
(With Fast diskette I/O - NO) - BATCH formatting is
performed.
BATCH - (With Fast diskette I/O - YES) - diskettes are first
formatted then written. If your media is suspect, this
option will set aside bad areas of the diskette so that
data will not be written to them.
NO - No output volume formatting will be performed.
FORMAT PROGRAM
If Fast diskette I/O is YES, and the output media is diskette
this setting need not be set. If Fast diskette I/O is NO or
the output media is not diskette, then this setting should be
set to the batch format program that you wish to use.
Use the standard DOS file format in specifying you program.
FORMAT.COM is the default and will be found on the PATH= if
it is not specifically set here.
PROGRAM PARAMETERS
This setting lets you specify parameters for your format
program. To assure that your format program uses the drive
specified in the TO window, enter a "%" percent where the
drive should be substituted.
Example: If you have a 1.44MB drive and you are using
720KB media, enter:
% /N:9 /T:80
CONFIGURATION (Continued)
DEVICE SETTINGS
To change the Device settings, press <D> from the Configuration menu.
From the Device setting window you can choose:
FAST DISKETTE I/O
This setting controls whether to use BackEZ's special high
speed floppy drive handling techniques. The default setting
is YES except for certain machines that have other than
standard floppy diskette interfacing.
YES - This setting almost doubles the speed of the backup.
A special formatting program is invoked when this setting is
selected that eliminates the need to format output media in
a separate program. The data on the output media is still
maintained in DOS compatible format and can be read by any
program.
NO - Standard DOS floppy drive handling and format routines
are used.
A: & B: TYPE/MEDIA
These settings specify the drive type and the media capacities
for drive A: and B:. These values are determined during your
first execution of BackEZ and should not require changing.
ALTERNATE DRIVES
Verb (to alternate) setting lets you alternate between drive
A: and drive B: during a backup or restore. If both drives
are the same device type, this can save time during the backup
by setting up the next drive to be written etc.
YES - drive alternation will occur.
NO - drives will not be alternated.
COLORS
To change the colors on a color monitor, press <C> to select the Set
Colors menu.
The Set Colors menu opens with their available commands and their
descriptions in the menu area. An example block is presented with the
currently select color attributes. By selecting a display type from
the menu and selecting a color from the Palette, you may alter the
colors that will be display by BackEZ. Remember to use the SAVE
command from the menu before exiting.
COMMAND-LINE PARAMETERS
Command-Line parameters are command or information that you provide to
a program on the end of the program name on the DOS command line.
BackEZ accepts the following command-line parameters:
C>BACKEZ [d:][path][filename[.ext]] [d:]
[/B]
[/R]
[/[+][-]M]
[/[+][-]S]
[/[+][-]V]
[/ATTR=[+][-]R[+][-]H[+][-]S]
[/K=[+][-]nnnnn]
[/D=[+][-]mm-dd-yy]
[/REPLACE=[Y][N][A]]
[/[+][-]RESET]
[/C=[d:][filename[.ext]]]
[/MONO]
[/COLOR]
[/AUTO]
[/NOPROMPT]
Each command-line parameter corresponds to a command or Option that you
would enter if BackEZ was already active. Options entered on the
command-line override those save in the BACKEZ.PRM file.
The .BAT files distributed with BackEZ provide examples of using
command-line parameters.
See the BackEZ USERS MANUAL for a detailed description of each
parameter.
TROUBLE SHOOTING
MEMORY
The amount of memory that BackEZ requires varies depending upon the
size of you hard disk and output devices, and how many directories and
files are to be backed up. Large hard disks, or high capacity output
devices require more memory. As a guideline, about 400K bytes of free
memory is required. A maximum configuration will be in the range of
480K bytes.
Memory related errors may appear suddenly, even after you have been
using the program for some time. The usual reason for this is that you
have added enough subdirectories and/or files to raise the memory
requirement beyond what is available.
There are two ways to increase available memory. Perhaps the easiest
is to buy more memory, if you don't have the maximum 640K already. The
other way is to reduce the amount taken by DOS and other memory
resident software. You may reduce the amount DOS uses by reducing the
number of DOS buffers. However, this may degrade system performance by
other programs. BackEZ's performance is not effected by the BUFFERS=
parameter in CONFIG.SYS. If you have memory-resident programs
installed, try removing one or all of them.
DOS FORMAT Command
With Fast diskette I/O set to NO, BackEZ uses the DOS format program.
To format a disk during a backup, BackEZ must be able to locate the DOS
FORMAT program. This program must either be in the current directory
(the one you started BackEZ from) or somewhere along the DOS search
path, or in the path specified in the Configuration menu.
FILE COUNTS & SIZES
The DOS CHKDSK program counts all the files on your disk and tallies
them in two categories: user files and hidden files. User files are
files that you have put on the disk yourself. Hidden files are files
such as the DOS system files and the disk volume label. The sum of
user files and hidden files is the total number of files on the disk.
BackEZ may not report the same number of files as CHKDSK. BackEZ does
not backup the DOS system files, the disk volume label, or any other
files that are among the Standard Exclude List described later. BackEZ
counts only files that have been selected for backup. The FROM window,
Scripts, and Options all effect the number of files selected for
backup. Remember to use the default Options to select the maximum
number of files.
CHKDSK also reports the amount of device storage consumed by a file as
opposed to the size of the file. BackEZ accounts for the actual file
size only. The bytes that CHKDSK reports and the bytes that BackEZ
reports will never be the same. If a file's size is 1 byte, CHKDSK
reports the file as being 512 bytes (minimum). The file occupies at
least 1 cluster on the disk. BackEZ will report the file size only
since cluster sizes will vary depending upon what media the file
resides. During backup, Selected and Processed counts would be
different if cluster sizes were used instead of file sizes.
STANDARD EXCLUDES
There are three types of files that BackEZ does not backup, even if you
select them explicitly. These are the DOS hidden system files,
commercial copy protection files and portions of BackEZ itself.
The DOS system files and copy protection files are position dependent.
They must reside at specific disk locations. They cannot be restored
properly by BackEZ or any other file oriented backup program, so there
is no need to back them up. The BackEZ log file is OPEN during the
backup and can not be guaranteed to be complete when it would be
selected for backup.
The standard excludes are:
IBM*.COM - PC-DOS system files
MSDOS.SYS - MS-DOS system file
IO.SYS - MS-DOS system file
ITCATLG.* - Copy protection files
