- The IBM Technical Seminar
-
- I attended the IBM Technical Seminar is Dallas, Texas on May 20
- thru 24, 1991. I found the Seminar VERY worthwhile. Here is a short
- summary and suggestion to anyone thinking of going.
-
-
- ******** First, what you get: *********************************
-
- 1. Monday through noon Friday of presentations of the features of
- OS/2 V2.0.
-
- 2. The current version of the OS/2 V2.0 Beta and all future updates
- till release. A new update with the new Workplace desktop paradigm
- will be shipped in July.
-
- 3. The IBM Programmers Workbench. This is a ALL NEW, ALL IBM 32bit
- OS/2 V2.0 development environment, running under V2.0 for
- developing Dos, Windows, and OS/2 programs. Included with
- the IBM PWB is a new all IBM 32 bit C compiler. I played
- with it two evenings and it blows away any other OS/2 C
- compiler. Also includes a PM debugger, a kernal debugger,
- and a profiler. These tools are all GUI. You get all betas
- of this through release. Many of the Microsoft tools problems
- such as having to use _beginThread instead of DosCreateThread
- because of the MSC RTL problems go away. Tools from other tool
- vendors will plug into the PWB. You will get the first beta
- of the PWB and C compiler by about the end of August.
- This compiler will be consistant accross ALL IBM platforms from
- OS/2 on pc's to 3090's. The IPF compiler and all the stuff you
- need to write V2.0 programs.
-
-
- 4. A 3 ring binder and very nice cloth OS/2 bag with shoulder
- strap and OS/2 printed on it, to carry the 3 ring binder. The
- 3 ring binder is about 6 inches thick and contains almost
- every view graph from the whole seminar. Even from concurrent
- evening sessions you may have missed.
-
- 5. Breakfast and lunch each day, plus morning and afternoon snacks.
- One dinner ( ours was a Texas BBQ with OS/2 branded into some
- very good steaks).
-
- 6. The chance to talk with and get to know the IBM developers and
- other large and small OS/2 ISV's. I got address and phone
- numbers of many IBMers involved in the development and support
- of OS/2. Also, made joint development agreements with other
- ISV's there. If you go, plan on being busy from 7AM breakfast
- till going to bed after 10PM. About 200 ISV's were at this.
- There is a seminar about every month, with one in Newport Beach
- in September.
-
- 7. Get there early Sunday at the latest, Seminar Check in is from
- 2pm to 6pm Sunday. Go to the hopitality suite and eat and talk
- OS/2.
-
-
- The Seminar cost $1500.00 plus hotel, other dinners, and travel cost. Not cheap
- but a bargain compaired to $2600.00 for the V2.0 Microsoft SDK.
-
-
- ******** Second, important technical details ****************
-
-
- 1. OS/2 V2.0 will support 240 concurrent DOS, Windows, or OS/2 sessions in
- full screen or windowed modes. Each DOS/Window session can use
- different DOS device drivers, will run the most ill behaved DOS
- programs, have greater than 633 Kbytes of real memory free after
- mouse and lan driver, support greater than 32 megabytes of Expanded,
- Extended, or DPMI ( Dos Protected Mode Interface) memory! That is for
- EACH session. Windows sessions can use the Windows code built into
- OS/2 v2.0, so you don't have to buy Windows to run Windows programs.
- I sure anyone on this BBS know the V2.0 specifications so I won't go
- into more details unless someone asks.
-
-
- 2. I assume everyone knows by now your can get OS/2 1.3 for about $110
- now with a FREE upgrade to OS/2 V2.0 when it is released. Same deal
- for the $99.00 upgrade from PC-DOS.
-
- 3. V2.0 will comes from IBM with many free productivity tools, such as
- spreadsheets, data bases, appointment calenders, etc.
-
- 4. V2.0 will comes from IBM with many free games. Basically, you get the
- equivalent of the MS Windows entertainment pact. Pm version of
- Solitare, Reversi, etc.
-
- 5. If you don't know REXX get Cowlishaw's book, " The Rexx Language, A
- Practical Approach To Programming" second edition from Op Amp or
- Technical Book Store and learn it. Rexx comes free with OS/2 since
- V1.3. Its the standard application macro language, OS JCL, and batch
- file language. If you do OS/2 you must know Rexx and C.
-
- 6. For those with large lan systems, good news. You can load applications
- and OS/2 V2.0 remotely from the server. No more having to go to each
- machine and install the new OS one at a time. You can have it auto
- installed at 2AM with the new IBM products.
-
- 7. The V2 IFP will support full motion video. Very Impressive.
-
- 8. Another new add on ( at an additional ~$200) is the System Performance
- Monitor. A graphical display plot of CPU , memory, and disk, utilization.
- Also has a logging mode for post mortum analysis.
-
- 9. IBM is supporting over 50 Printer drivers for V2.0 include the HP
- Deskjet. Version 1.3 was the first that would print worth a darn and
- V2.0 promises to be even better.
-
- 10. IBM is trying very hard to get the cost of developing for OS/2 down. No
- prices for the new IBM PWB but from talking to them I expect the IBM
- PWB with C compiler to have a street price <$300.00. Of couse the
- Borland Turbo C++ for PM will be cheaper still (~$150.00 or less?)
- but 3 months or so later.
-
- 11. The current list of computer manufactures being certified for V2.0 by
- IBM is AST, Compulab, Acer, Epson, Everex, HP, Tricore, Paralan,
- Netframe, Reply, Dell, and Tandon. There are others but I could only
- write so fast.
-

- If you have any question, contact me on this BBS, leave a message, and I'll
- try to answer it. I realy love OS/2 and V2.0. Dave M. called this weekend
- and asked me to help out with the IBM OS/2 workshop in Florida in July for
- a week. That should be fun too. Dave's a great guy and his OS/2 book is a
- must read.
