THE TOTAL HAM
COMPLETE STATION RECORD KEEPING PROGRAM
Copyright 1988 BY DICK MILLER WD4AZG
VERSION 3.0
INTRODUCTION:
This program is my answer to the problem of not having the
proper program running or not having the info available while on the
air. It will allow logging and dupping and at the same time have a beam
heading list, your country & state checklists, QSL info all available on
line now when you need it. It will also allow you to log in QSL cards as
received, automatically entering the information to your log.
The TOTAL HAM will do almost anything you need for your ham records.
The program is only limited by the size of the disk. A hard disk or floppy
drives greater than 360K is recommended with this program to have enough room
for a log of any size. Read FLOPPY.DOC for more information.
REVISION HISTORY:
Version 2.0 - first release
Version 3.0
1 - Adds color if run on a color system.
2 - Fixes display alignment problem in the QSL area.
3 - Adds the ability to configure for a floppy system.
4 - Adds a search of your QSL manager file as you enter
a call in either regular, contest or net logging.
If a manager is found, it will be displayed &
automatically entered to log.
5 - Better prompts for required entries.
6 - Paged listing of multiple dup contacts.
7 - Confirmation before exiting to dos.
8 - Program will NOT run if system clock is NOT set.
9 - Function keys now used for some options in logging
operations. The ones you would not like to enter by
accident are left as full words.
10 - Net style logging option added. suggestion by KB6KBA.
Like regular logging except that it adds an option
to review contact call & name of all contacts logged
while in this option. Useful for "who's on the net".
Since this option does more it's just a little
slower than the others. Suggestion by KB6KBA
11 - Fixes a few small bugs in file handling & displays.
12 - Adds the ability to delete an entry from the QSL
Manager file. Suggestion by N4OGR
13 - Adds automatic entry & update of QSL Manager file if
entered or changed while logging a contact.
Suggestion by KI3S.
NOTE: Printing QSL card needed to send to labels was not
workable considering the varied format of QSL cards.
START UP:
Be sure your CONFIG.SYS file contains FILES=20.
Be sure your system clock is set to local time. This program will
get the system time and convert it to UTC for logging purposes.
SET the conversion factor from the FILE MAINTENANCE menu.
If you are upgrading from Version 2.0, erase TOTLHAM.CFG from your
disk. New with Version 3.0 is the ability to configure your copy to run on
a floppy system. Version 3.0 will create the new version file as it starts
the first time.
I recommend you try the program out on a test set of files. If you
like the program and wish to use it, register it with me & input your paper
log from the point you wish to start. Input in date order as you would on
paper. This will insure your hard copy print out from the log will be in order.
By then you should have received your customized BEAM.DAT file. You may then
start using the program on the air and the log will be kept up from that point
on as it should be.
PROGRAM FUNCTIONS:
LOGGING:
Choosing this menu will first ask for Band & Mode. This intializes
the system for automatic entry of UTC time & date, band & mode.
LOGGING - REGULAR This option asks for a call and checks your log for
previous contacts. If found it will display them and asks if you want to
ENTER. Anything other than Y for enter will skip the call and return to
the call prompt. END returns to the MAIN menu. Y will enter the contact and
will automatically enter the call, UTC date & time, band and mode. You may then
enter other info as prompted. Version 3.0 adds a search of the QSL managers
list. If the station has a manager in the file, it will be displayed also.
LOGGING - CONTEST This is a shortened, fast entry form of REGULAR logging.
It asks for the call and checks your log for previous contacts. If found it
will display them and asks if you want to ENTER. Anything other than Y for
enter will skip the call and return to the call prompt. END returns to the
MAIN menu. Y will enter the contact, and automatically enter the call,
UTC date & time, contest name, band, mode and a 59 signal report. You may then
enter other info as prompted. All contacts with this call will be displayed,
but the date and contest name will show if it is a dupe. NOTE: After the
contest is over, do at least Menu item #1 in the CONTEST PROCESSING SECTION.
This will save the proper contest name and info for the rest of the section to
work properly later. Make a note of the name you have chosen for the file.
You will need it to finish the processing. Version 3.0 adds a search of the QSL
managers list. If the station has a manager in the file, it will be displayed
also.
NEW OPTION with Version 3.0
LOGGING - NET STYLE This option asks for a call and checks your log for
previous contacts.
If the station has a QSL manager in the file,
it will be displayed also. The call and name of all contacts while in this
mode are saved & can be recalled by F9 key. Useful for remembering "Who's on
the net".
BEAM HEADINGS are called from the UTILITIES menu or either of the logging
options and asks for the prefix of the country desired. It returns the beam
heading, name of country, ITU zone, DX zone and, if it is a DXCC country.
The beam headings, as distributed, are for the local Manassas, Va. area.
When registering your copy of TOTAL HAM be sure to include your home
latitude and longitude. You will receive a replacement file customized to
your location, and any upgraded version available at the time.
COUNTRY CHECKLIST is the built in DXCC country list. It also can be called
from the UTILITIES menu or either of the logging options. It asks for the
prefix and returns prefix, alternate prefixes, name of country, zones,
confirmation of both ssb and cw contacts, and fields for X's for each band.
STATE CHECKLIST is the built in WAS state list. It also can be called
from the UTILITIES menu or either of the logging options. It asks for
the state abreviation and returns the name of state, confirmation of both ssb
and cw contacts, and fields for X's for each band.
2 letter STATE abrev - displays a two letter state abbreviations list for those
like me who can't remember them. It also can be called for the UTILITIES
menu or either of the logging options.
QSL MANAGERS - Asks for the call and if found will display the call and the
manager's call or other QSL info. This can be used for all managers, not only
stateside. This file contains a few entries now but can be updated by you from
QSL info sources. I did not include the file I use as it is somewhat dated.
QSL HANDLING:
QSL confirmed count - will count and display either countries or states
confirmed on ssb and cw.
Receive QSL cards - allows you to enter QSL cards received to the log.
Send QSL cards - prints a list of contacts you have flagged in the log as
wanting a card and a list of the contacts you have not flagged as being sent.
QSL cards sent & not recieved - lists the contacts who have not sent you cards
after you sent one to them.
COUNTRY CHECKLIST - is the built-in DXCC country list. It also can be called
from the UTILITIES menu or either of the logging options. It asks for the
prefix and returns prefix, alternate prefixes, name of country, zones,
confirmation of both ssb and cw contacts, and fields for X's for each band.
STATE CHECKLIST - is the built-in WAS state list. It also can be called
from the UTILITIES menu or either of the logging options. It asks for the
state abreviation and returns the name of state, confirmation of both ssb
and cw contacts, and fields for X's for each band.
QSL MANAGERS Asks for the DX stations call and if found will display the call
and the manager's call or other QSL info. This can be used for all managers,
or only stateside managers. This file contains a few entries now but can be
updated by you from QSL info sources. I did not include the file I use as it
is somewhat dated.
CONTEST PROCESSING:
This section will get the contest entries from your log, make the appropriate
files, allow editing, and print out reports for use in filling out the entry
sheets.
NOTE: After working a contest, do at least Menu item #1 in the CONTEST
PROCESSING SECTION. This will save the proper contest name and info for the
rest of the section to work properly later. Make a note of the name you have
chosen for the file. You will need it to finish the processing.
FILE MAINTENANCE:
This section will allow you to add a confirmed state or country to the
appropriate file & add to the QSLMAN file.
LOG maintenance - is another menu that allows editing & printing of LOG.
Add to LOG manually - allows you to add your paper log to the program.
Edit by CALL - will display all entries for that call sign and allow you
to edit one of them.
Edit by DATE - will display or print out all entries for the selected day,
month and year and allow editing of one of them.
Edit by MONTH - will display or print out all entries for the selected month
and year and allow editing of one of them.
Delete a LOG entry - allows deletion of a LOG entry.
Print out hard copy of log - will print out your log either since your last
print out or the whole log at once. The log is paged and margined for a 3
hole binder.
*** IMPORTANT ***
Change UTC conversion factor - You MUST input the number of hours behind UTC
for your time zone. Also REMEMBER to change this on change to Daylight
savings time and back to Standard.
The program AUTOMATICALLY converts from local time to UTC for log entries
from your system clock and AUTOMATICALLY enters it to your log. So be SURE
your system clock is set and UTC is correct before using the logging option
of this program.
OPERATION:
When the program is first started your system time & UTC time is
displayed. This allows a check of the conversion to UTC. If your system time is
wrong, change it from DOS. If the UTC time is wrong go to the FILE MAINTENANCE
MENU and change to conversion factor to the proper value. This value is saved
to a memory file and will not have to be changed until daylight savings time
comes in or out.
The individual menu options are covered fairly well above but a few tips
will help you get the full use of the program.
When asked for a prefix, partial prefixes can be useful to find matches.
EXAMPLE:
If you input VK0, you will only find VK0. to find all VK'S, enter only VK.
V only will display everything beginning with V. It is always better, if not
sure, to find more than you need so you won't miss something.
When entering QSL managers the program will check the file first for
a prior entry. If found it will display what is there and allow you to edit
it if you want. If NOT found you are asked if you want to add it. The call
of the DX station is automatically entered and you only have to enter the
managers information. If you have made a mistake in the DX stations call,
note it, and enter it again. Now you will now be able to edit it.
Place 10-10 numbers in the Exchange field of log preceeded by 10X.
COMMERCIAL:
TOTAL HAM is to be distributed as SHAREWARE. Unmodified, complete copies
may be distributed & shared by all so long as no commercial use or sale is
made. Do not include this program with other programs.
Print out and complete REGISTER.DOC to become a register user.
Be SURE to enter your home latitude and longitude for you customized
beam heading file.
Try the program on a backup set of files to see how they work.
I think the program is a complete HAM SHACK record keeping system.
I have used the program extensively and have modified it many
times. If you think of a modification, or addition to improve it, I
would appreciate it if you would drop a note in the mail to me, or
leave a comment on my RBBS. I will evaluate it for incorporation
into future revisions - with due credit of course.
Updates will be forthcoming
ENJOY!
