  3. Connect-USA Announces Low Cost BBS Service

  5. Connect-USA Communications Incorporated, of Albuquerque, New Mexico today
  6. announced that it is building a nationwide data communications network with
  7. emphasis on serving the growing community of Bulletin Board System callers.
  8.  
  9. The network, based on X.25 fast packet switching technology, became
  10. operational on July 15, 1991.
  11.  
  12. The network will begin operations in Los Angeles, San Jose, Seattle,
  13. Chicago, Milwaukee, the Washington DC and northern Virginia area, Atlanta,
  14. Tampa, Miami, Dallas, Houston and Albuquerque.

  16. The network will offer the "Connect-USA Leisure Time Account" in the above
  17. cities beginning in May. This service will permit callers to use the
  18. network to make "dialout" calls from any of the initial twelve cities to
  19. any of the other same cities. The network customer is charged thirty
  20. dollars ($30) for up to thirty hours of network usage per month. Hours used
  21. over the initial thirty hours are billed at $3.00 per hour. Callers may use
  22. the network at any time, day or night.

  24. Connect-USA will support baud rates up to 14.4KBPS through the use of
  25. V.32bis/MNP and Compucom DIS modems. Lower BPS rates are also supported.

  27. According to Dean Kerl, vice president of operations, "The network will
  28. fill a void in dial up communications by being the first to support the
  29. fast spreading V.32bis standard."

  31. "Other services, including the Starlink service of our sister company,
  32. Galaxy Telecomm Corporation, are typically restricted to 2400BPS. With
  33. modem prices dropping, our Leisure Time service will allow new modem
  34. purchasers to use their high-speed modems economically." Kerl Said.

  36. "For those callers who do not need the high speed of V.32bis, we will also
  37. support the Compucom Speedmodem which uses a proprietary 9600 BPS
  38. 'standard'. A user will typically dial one of our access numbers that
  39. corresponds with his modem type. After entering his unique Network User
  40. Identification and password, he indicates the area code and telephone
  41. number he wishes to call. The network checks to see if a call can be placed
  42. to that number, and if so, completes the call with the same type of modem
  43. the user called the network with. It's a truly effortless process, unlike
  44. other services which require the use of complicated codes and network
  45. commands."

  47. "We feel that this service will be well received by experienced modem users
  48. as well as those who are just entering this exciting field of computer
  49. communications" Kerl continued. "The learning curve is remarkably short. A
  50. caller will be communicating in a matter of minutes instead of the hours
  51. previously required."

  53. The service is currently operational via the Compuserve Data Network in the
  54. cities of Albuquerque, Boston, Honolulu, Ft. Lauderdale and Milwaukee. The
  55. company plans to continue services to these cities through it's existing
  56. facilities.

  58. Plans have been made to extend the service to additional major cities later
  59. in the year.

  61. In addition to being able to dial remote computer systems through the
  62. dialout facility, callers may reach several major Bulletin Board Systems
  63. and Information providers who have signed on with Connect-USA, becoming
  64. directly connected to the network. Some of these major systems are: Exec-PC
  65. (Milwaukee, WI), Rusty 'N Edie's BBS (Youngstown, OH), Dragon Net BBS
  66. (Galveston, TX), Micro Mall (Tacoma, WA), Galaxy (Albuquerque, NM), Isles
  67. Of Shae (Ft. Lauderdale, FL), Channel 1 (Boston, MA), Atlanta Chatline
  68. (Atlanta, GA), Chicago Syslink (Chicago, IL), The Burbs (Los Angeles, CA),
  69. Cloud Nine (Houston, TX), Prostar (Seattle, WA) and Meganet (Tampa, FL).

  71. Callers residing in cities not yet equipped with Connect-USA facilities may
  72. utilize the service via Compuserve's dial up access numbers in over 800
  73. cities. Callers are charged $3.00 per connect hour when using Compuserve's
  74. access numbers.
