EAGLETL.DOC...........This file you're (hopefully) reading
EAGLETL.EXE...........Terminal Lock Program (Eagle-TLock)
UPDATE INFO: (01 January 1990)
Version 1.00 has been update to version 1.05. Several major changes
have been coded into this version. All user keys have been changed, they
are as follows:
(Version 0.95 and below) * (Versions 1.05 and above)
Enter Password........[Any key pressed].............[F1 key]
Message Center........[Tab key].....................[F2 key]
Change Password.......[Escape key]..................[F3 key]
Also, the opening screen now goes straight to the EagleWare TLock logo
where as previous versions showed the "Enter Password" window. If any key is
pressed except the defined users keys (F1/F2/F3) nothing happens except the
logo moves around the screen. The delay for the random printing of the logo
has been changed from machine dependent clock speed to 10 second intervals.
UPDATE INFO: (01 November 1989)
Version 0.95 has been updated to version 1.00. A message center module
has been added. Activated by the tab key (F2 key v1.05), the user can now
leave a message on his screen in two lines of text that will appear when he
leaves his system. Color changes in this message prevent screen burn-in.
To escape, press the space bar. There will be a slight delay before returning
to password.
UPDATE INFO: (16 July 1989)
Version 0.92 has been updated to version 0.95. The only major change is
the capture of the Ctrl-Alt-Del keys to prevent a system reboot. We are
currently working on also capturing the Ctrl-Alt-Esc keys used on many AT
clones to access the CMOS and the Ctrl-Alt-Ins keys used to access the CMOS on
Zenith Z-248 systems.
WHAT IT IS:
Eagle-TLock is a Terminal/System Locking program that enables a you to
leave your PC unattended for a short time without turning it off or leaving it
open to tampering fingers. This program is useful if you need to leave your PC
unattended for nature breaks, coffee breaks, etc. want to have it on and
relatively safe from snooping co-workers.
WHAT IT ISN'T:
Eagle-TLock is not a sure-fire security program and your use or misuse
of it is at your own risk. EagleWare Software Engineering does not make any
expressed or implied guarantees.
BEFORE SET-UP:
It is highly recommended that you make a back-up copy of EAGLETL.EXE in
the event that you forget your own password once you have configured the
program.
HOW TO SET IT UP:
When you first get Eagle-TLock (EAGLETL.EXE), the default password is:
NEW.
The program passwords are case sensitive, meaning "NEW" (typed in all
capital letters) is not the same as "new" (typed in all lowercase letters).
Load EAGLETL.EXE from the DOS prompt (C:> EAGLETL). Once loaded, a box
will appear with the Eagle-TLock logo, the EagleWare name and "Enter Password."
Pressing (F1 key only - v1.05) any key will bring up a smaller box that will
prompt you for your password. Enter NEW in capital letters.
(If you make a mistake entering the password and try to use the back space
key, the program will beep and tell you that the password is incorrect.)
To enter your own personal password, press the [Esc] key (F3 key v1.05).
The screen will clear and a box will be displayed and prompt you for the
current password (NEW for first runs). Type in NEW (or your current password
if you have previously changed it).
Once you have typed in your new password, press [Enter] and a verification
box will appear and prompt you for the same password again to make sure you
typed what you think you typed. If entered correctly, the program will beep
and tell you that the new password you entered was accepted. That password will
now be the one required in order to exit EAGLETL.EXE.
MISCELLENEOUS INFORMATION:
All passwords entered are encrypted and cannot be viewed with programs
like Norton (c), QuickDOS II (c), etc.
You must not rename EAGLETL.EXE to another filename. If you do, the
process of changing the password which writes to the .EXE file will not work,
as it looks for the program name, EAGLETL.EXE.
The method used to encrypt the passwords is nothing fancy and can be
hacked or broken. This program is design to protect your system from everyday
tampering.
The program captures the Crtl-C and Ctrl-Break keys and cannot be ABORTED.
You have an unlimited number of attempts to enter a correct password if you
happen to forget it. The only way out of Eagle-TLock if you do forget your
password is do a cold reboot of your PC and start over from the beginning to
reconfigure it again.
After two minutes of no keyboard activity, Eagle-TLock will clear the
screen and randomly print [EagleWare * Terminal Locked] at various locations
on your monitor to prevent screen burn-in. (This Feature is NULL with v1.05).
Eagle-TLock has been tested with:
DOS versions 3.0 - 3.3
XT and AT clones
Zenith Z-248's and Z-386's
Mono/CGA/EGA/VGA monitors
A NOTE FROM THE AUTHOR:
I would like to thank Doug Haire, sysop of the Telephone Exchange BBS,
for his support of EagleWare programs by providing an EagleWare software user
support conference on his board. I would also like to thank Charlotte Keppeler
for document editing, overlooking the misspelled words, my bad grammar and
just for being Charlotte...(Foot fetish, Yellow 10-E's and all) !
THE FINE PRINT:
Like all EagleWare programs, Eagle-TLock is FREE. However, a $5.00
contribution results in user support from the program's author, Rick Prince,
in the EagleWare conference on this BBS:
