  142.         Welcome to TomCat! -- the .QWK mail door for Wildcat! BBS.

  144.         What's a mail door, you might well ask ...
  145.  
  146.         TomCat! allows you  download BBS messages to read  offline with a
  147.         reader program  such as Qmail  or EZ-Reader. You  download a .QWK
  148.         mail packet consisting of messages, bulletins, new file listings,
  149.         and the bulletin board's own "hello" and "goodbye" screens.
  150.  
  151.         It takes far less time to  download a hundred or so messages than
  152.         it does  to read them on  line. Use your favorite  text editor or
  153.         word processor  while replying to  messages at your  convenience.
  154.         The offline reader simulates an on-line BBS session, allowing you
  155.         to read and reply to messages, without tying up the phone line or
  156.         incurring expensive  toll charges. Later,  you can call  back and
  157.         upload your  replies, where they are  inserted automatically into
  158.         the BBS message base. It takes only a few seconds.
  159.  
  160.         to call bulletin boards in the middle of the night, download mail
  161.         and upload replies -- all  without the frustration of redialing a
  162.         busy system during prime time.
  163.  
  164.         Online help is available from TomCat!'s main menu, but here are a
  165.         few  quick tips  to get  you  going.  TomCat! is  easy to  learn,
  166.         particularly if  you have used  other .QWK mail  doors. New users
  167.         will find the configuration menu easy to understand, and advanced
  168.         users will like the powerful options available.
  169.         
  170.         Most of your default settings  are taken directly from Wildcat!'s
  171.         user file -- color, hotkeys,  and default transfer protocol. From
  172.         the [C]onfigure TomCat! menu, you can select regular and extended
  173.         conferences  to download,  reset  your  high message  pointers to
  174.         reread  old mail  or skip  messages globally  or within  specific
  175.         folders,  and reset  your  new  file/bulletin scan  date. Default
  176.         download  options   and  packet  types   (.QWK,  uncompressed  or
  177.         compressed  text file)  can all   be saved  in your  TomCat! user
  178.         record.
  179.  
  180.         You  can  also  configure  TomCat!  offline.  Add,  reset or drop
  181.         conferences  using the  features of  your mail  reader -- TomCat!
  182.                                          
  183.         TOMCAT, to add, drop or reset  a conference. You can even request
  184.         a return  receipt --  messages uploaded  through the  door with a
  185.         topic line beginning  with RRR will generate a  return receipt in
  186.         Wildcat!'s  message database  to  inform  you when  the addressee
  187.         reads or downloads your message.

  189.                       NEW FEATURES IN TOMCAT 2.0
  190.  
  191.         There are some new features in the most recent release (2.0) of
  192.         Tomcat:  You can now specify whether you want the packet to
  193.         include New Bulletins and/or New Files.  If you check these each
  194.         time you sign on the BBS anyway, you may as well save time by not
  195.         having them included in your packet.  (Think twice before blowing
  196.         away the bulletins, though -- even though Hottips updates many of 
  197.         the bulletins automatically, only the truly significant ones will
  198.         appear in the new bulletins listing.

  200.         Also -- you can 'stack' command in the Tomcat system.  For example,
  201.         if you want to download messages and then Sign Off the system,
  202.         you can ansswer 'DG' to the main prompt.  Tomcat will run 'D'ownload,
  203.         and then, after the files are scanned, it will pick up the 'G' and
  204.         run 'G'oodbye just as if you waited for the scan to finish and then
  205.

  226.     ║  Gannett, the company I work for, has been developing an          ║░░
  227.     ║  exciting new way of transmitting digital audio -- we're          ║░░
  228.     ║  going to do it in the existing FM band.                          ║░░

  230.     ║  Other systems have been proposed that will use a much            ║░░
  231.     ║  higher range of frequencies... either 1.5 or 2.3 Ghz.            ║░░
  232.     ║  People that have used these channels know how effective          ║░░
  233.     ║  they are in penetrating steel buildings, tunnels, and            ║░░
  234.     ║  other structures that block the transmission path...             ║░░
  235.     ║  Traditionalists call these high frequencies  -                   ║░░
  236.     ║  transmitter -- you can't hear it, either.                        ║░░
  237.     ║                                                                   ║░░
  238.     ║  Our system mixes the digital information in with the             ║░░
  239.     ║  already existing FM carrier....  and both that carrier           ║░░
  240.     ║  and the new digital ones can exist together without              ║░░
  241.     ║  interfering with each other.    There are a multiple             ║░░
  242.     ║  number of signals involved in the Gannett system.  All           ║░░
  243.     ║  your receiver has to do is pick up some of them to rebuild       ║░░
  244.     ║  the music.                                                       ║░░

  246.     ║  Because multipath will only cancel out -some- of the             ║░░
  247.     ║  carriers at any one time, it's no longer a problem with          ║░░
  248.     ║  our system.  The quality is incredible - 90+ db. Signal          ║░░
  249.     ║  to Noise Ratio,  and measured distortion less then .01%          ║░░

  251.     ║  The figures also show we'll save on transmitter power, too.      ║░░
  252.     ║  Early propagation studies show we should be able to surpass      ║░░

  269.     ║  operation.  Not only do a lot of parameters have to be           ║░░
  270.     ║  changed, but a number of bulletins have to be reconfigured.      ║░░

  293.     ║  The new Practical Peripheral 9600 SA modem I installed on        ║░░
  294.     ║  Line # 2 seems to be both a blessing and a bane to the BBS.      ║░░

  296.     ║  While it allows most v.32 users to call in at high speed,        ║░░
  297.     ║  it also has a heck of a time accepting calls from some of        ║░░
  298.     ║  the U.S. Robotics Dual Standard Modems.  Apparently U.S.R.       ║░░
  299.     ║  decided to get the jump on some of the other modem makers,       ║░░
  300.     ║  and they've been providing chip sets to add the new (and yet     ║░░
  301.     ║  official) v.32bis 14.4 bidirectional protocol.                   ║░░

  303.     ║  When they added this feature to their Dual Standard Modems,      ║░░
  304.     ║  to connect to v.32/v.42bis modems that DID adhere to the         ║░░
  305.     ║  CCITT -approved v.32/v.42 bis standard.                          ║░░

  307.     ║  Now I'm told that as long as the USR Dual Stamdards are          ║░░
  308.     ║  using a 'Supervisor' chip dated after 11/10/90, they should      ║░░
  309.     ║  have no problem making the 9600 connection.                      ║░░

  311.     ║  That's what I'm told -- but practice seems to show that the      ║░░
  312.     ║  connection is still far from reliable and is a source of         ║░░
  313.     ║  frustration to the Hottips USR DS users.                         ║░░

  315.     ║  I'm going to have to send the modem back anyway in a couple      ║░░
  316.     ║  of weeks for a motherboard transplant.  The Practical            ║░░
  317.     ║  Peripherals Engineers designed the unit so that it needs a       ║░░
  318.     ║  front panel button to be pushed to turn it on after the          ║░░
  319.     ║  power is applied.  Fine, as long as someone is here to push      ║░░
  320.     ║  the button.   A modem used on a BBS should be able to restart    ║░░
  321.     ║  after a power failure without human intervention.                ║░░

  323.     ║  I'll check and see if Practical Peripherals has had a chance     ║░░
  324.     ║  to work on the problam (and to find a solution) before I         ║░░
