DOCUMENTATION
Welcome to ECSMAD
Emerald Coast Software's
Magazine Articles Database for computer users.
ECSMAD is a fully functional database which you may immediately
put to good use, however, it is limited to a 150 keyword index.
The registered version will not have this limitation.
1. Make a backup copy of your original, always!
2. Installation. A CGA or EGA video adapter is required.
a. Installation on hard drives.
Make a directory on your hard drive as to where you wish
to keep your Magazine Articles Database and related files.
If you wish to be able to run ECSMAD from any directory on
your hard drive, be sure to add the directory in which you
place ECSMAD to your path statement in your autoexec.bat file.
This is the suggested way of operation so you will be able to
quickly locate those articles of immediate interest.
Copy ECSMAD.EXE (and example files) to the directory you have
just made. Type ECSMAD and press <Enter>. It's that simple.
b. Installation on floppies.
Don't use your originals. Make a backup copy.
Place your disk with ECSMAD.EXE in the drive you wish to use,
type ECSMAD and press <Enter>.
3. Included in the ECSMAD database package are the following files:
ECSMAD.EXE Main database program.
Articles.dat Sample records file.
Keywords.inx Keyword index used with sample records file.
Language.inx Language index used with sample records file.
Magazine.inx. Magazine index used with sample records file.
ECSMAD.DOC This file.
ECSMAD.NFO You must read this file.
README.1ST Late breaking information will be here.
REGISTER.ME ECSMAD printer-ready registration form.
Use the examples to look at how the information is stored and
retrieved.
4. GETTING STARTED.

READ THE MAINTENANCE MENU, ITEM 6 OF THE DOCUMENTATION BEFORE
ADDING, DELETING, CORRECTING or STARTING A NEW DATABASE!!!

If you have included the directory in which ECSMAD resides in
your path statement on your hard drive or are using floppies,
type ECSMAD and press <Enter>.
If you have not included the path statement in your autoexec.bat
file then, change to your directory in which you have placed
ECSMAD, type ECSMAD and press <Enter>.
5. The first thing you will see ( if you have not registered your
ECSMAD program yet ) is the opening screen and copyright notice.
Please read the information displayed and then press <Enter>
to continue. You will then be in the Main Menu of ECSMAD.
6. It is from the Main Menu that most activities will be done.
You may familiarize yourself with the operation of the database
by using the sample files included with this program.
7. When you are familiar with the operation of the database, press
the 'G' key in the Main Menu to go to the Maintenance Menu.
8. You must START A NEW DATABASE before entering your information
for your database.

9. ENTERING INFORMATION.
Add record to database.
From the Main Menu, press the 'A' key to start entering your
information. You will probably want to scan through some back
issues of your magazines, picking up tidbits of information or
articles of interest and enter them into your database.
The information does not have to be entered in any particular
order. You may enter information from any magazine or from
different magazines, different dates, etc., in the same setting.
As each bit of information for the tidbit, article or topic
is entered, you will be shown on the screen, information
pertaining to the field you are entering.
When you have completed the entering of information for each
tidbit, press the F10 key to save the information into your
database for future quick retrieval and access.
10.Search by keywords.
You may search or look for a particluar tidbit, article or
topic by a keyword.
From the Main Menu press C to search by keyword. When 'C' is
pressed, you will be presented with a window in which to enter
the keyword on which to search.
You may either enter the keyword from the keyboard or press
F1 key for a list of keywords that you have previously entered.
When the F1 key is pressed, you will be presented with another
window in which will appear a scrollable alphabetical listing of
all keywords in the database.
Use the PageUp, PageDown, Home, End and Direction keys to highlight
your keyword selection and then press enter. Your selection of
keyword will appear in the main window. Press <Enter> again and
the record number and a short description for all articles. tidbits
or topics using the selected keyword will be listed on screen.
Look through the listing on screen and locate the main item of
interest, note the record number of the item, press <Enter>
twice and type the record number of the main item of interest
and press <Enter> again. The complete listing of information
for the item selected will be shown on the screen.
11.Search by Language.
You may search or look for a particluar tidbit, article or
topic by type of langauge.
From the Main Menu press D to search by langauge. When 'D' is
pressed, you will be presented with a window in which to enter
the language on which to search.
Follow the same basic procedure as presented above for keywords.
12.Search by Magazine.
You may search or look for a particluar tidbit, article or
topic by Magazine.
From the Main Menu press E to search by magazine. When 'E' is
pressed, you will be presented with a window in which to enter
the magazine on which to search.
Follow the same basic procedure as presented above for keywords.
13.LIST ALL RECORDS.
From the Main Menu, if you press F, all records in the database
will be listed a screen full at the time. Pressing <Enter> will
keep listing screens until the end of the database is reached.
If the database is long, this could be a lengthy procedure.
You may press <F6> to exit the listing of all records.
14.MAINTENANCE MENU.
From the Main Menu, if you press G, you will move to the
Maintenance Menu where all of your maintenance of the records
(corrections, adding keywords, deleting keywords, sorting indexes,
etc.) will be done when and if needed.
You will also be able to list on the printer an up to the minute
alphabetical listing of Keywords, Language type and Magazines
names that are in the database.
15.QUIT.
Pressing Q while in the Main Menu will allow you to correctly
exit the program.
MAINTENANCE MENU
1. EDIT A RECORD.
If you wish to make corrections, change keywords, etc. for an
existing record in the database, you may do so by pressing the
'A' key.
This will open a window where you will be asked for the record
number that you wish to edit. Enter the number of the record and
press <Enter>.
The record will be shown on the screen in the same format in
which you first added your information.
You will be asked to confirm that you wish to edit the record.
If you press any key other than the 'Y' key, you will be returned
to the Menu and no changes will have been made to the record.
If you confirm that you wish to edit the record by pressing 'Y'
and then <Enter>, the cursor will be placed at the first character
of the first field.
If you wish to change the information in the highlighted field,
delete the existing information and enter the new info.
When a field is highlighted and you do not wish to make a change
in that field, press enter. The information will remain the same
and will not be changed.
When you have completed your editing, press the F10 key to save
the corrected record back to the database.
2. PRINT A LIST OF KEYWORDS.
If you wish to get a 'hard copy' of your keywords, all you have
to do is: make sure the printer is on line and has paper in it.
Press B and an alphabetical listing of all keywords in the
database will be printed on your printer.
3. PRINT A LIST OF LANGUAGES.
If you wish to get a 'hard copy' of your language types,
all you have to do is:
make sure the printer is on line and has paper in it.
Press C and an alphabetical listing of all keywords in the
database will be printed on your printer.
4. PRINT A LIST OF MAGAZINES.
If you wish to get a 'hard copy' of your keywords, all you have
to do is: make sure the printer is on line and has paper in it.
Press D and an alphabetical listing of all keywords in the
database will be printed on your printer.
5. SORT THE INDEXES.
In order to assure that your keyword, language and magazine
index remains in alphabetical order, you should occasionally
press E in the Maintenance Menu.
Your index files will be sorted and ready for use.
6. START A NEW DATABASE.
You must START A NEW DATABASE before entering your information
for your database. When you press 'F' you will given a warning
That all previously entered data will be destroyed and lost
forever. You must confirm that you wish to start a new database
by entering 'Y' or 'y' and pressing <Enter>.
Any answer other than Y or y, will take you back to the menu and
nothing will have happened.
When you answer Y to START A NEW DATABASE, four new files will
be created on the disk from which ECSMAD is run. They will have
the same names as the example files included with ECSMAD.
7. RETURN TO MAIN MENU.
Pressing G will return you to the Main Menu.
