Upgrading Ample Notice from 1.3 to 2.0
If you have been previously using Ample Notice 1.3, you
probably have related files in the directory \AN. Running the
installation program ANSETUP will (by default) place files in the
a new directory \AN2 on a hard disk. We recommend that you
proceed with the installation, and afterwards
1. Add \AN2 to your DOS PATH in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file (ANSETUP
will do this automatically if you let it).
2. Delete \AN from your DOS PATH.
3. Copy NOTES and ARCHIVE.CAL from your old Ample Notice
directory to the new one. E.g.,
COPY \AN\NOTES \AN2
COPY \AN\ARCHIVE.CAL \AN2
4. Delete all files from the old AN directory and remove the
directory itself. E.g.,
DEL \AN\*.*
RD \AN
You will lose your old CONFIG.CAL file if you had one, but the
syntax of this file has changed significantly since version 1.3
and it's best to start from scratch. (See Section 8 of the manual
for details on CONFIG.CAL.) However, the format of the NOTES file
has not changed much and you can easily modify your existing file
to meet the new expectations. Note categories have been extended
to up to four characters, and the category definition has changed
accordingly. An example in AN 1.3 might be:
*C Automotive records (the definition)
*C Change oil at 30000 miles (an entry)
A new example:
\C CAR=Automotive records (the definition)
*CAR Change oil at 30000 miles (an entry)
You can also use categories in appointments:
\*CAR 9/15/90 60000 mile maintenance
The easiest way to change existing categories to the new format is
to simply change the definition line, e.g. from
*C Automotive records
to
\C C=Automotive records
If you have the patience, it will be worth your while to replace
single-character codes with more descriptive codes of up to four
characters. (CAR is easier to remember than C.)
There are several new options that can be used in the NOTES
file, but the extension of categories is the only one that
requires modifying your old file.

As always, the complete manual for Ample Notice is included on
disk. If you are a registered user of a previous version you can
obtain the new manual for $3 ($5 foreign). If you are not a
registered user we encourage you to support Shareware; see Section
11 of the manual or enter AN -I for details.
