Read on & see what I mean. | | | | I was standing in the kitchen with my wife. On the stove there was a big | | pot (like what you cook spaghetti in). Inside this pot was a dead body. | | Apparently it was the body of a criminal who tried to attack us or kill us | | or something. However, we managed to kill him first, and decided to make | | him into mashed potatoes. That is what he was turning into as we cooked | | him. I took a paper plate in hand, scooped out a bunch of the potatoes, | | and started smooshing them around on the paper plate, adding salt & pepper | | and butter. Here's what was written by | | Stewart Morris: What causes dirt roads in the desert to become "washboard"| | ed. I know that rain/runoff does it, but how? | | | | Well Stewart, you are part right. Truth is the washboard effect does hap- | | pen as a result of rain and run-off. Because most roads in the desert will| | travel around the base of hills, the rain will come off the hills and wash | | over the road, from one side to another, causing ruts to form. But, even | | that is not the major cause of the washboard effect. What is, is the | | drastic changes in temperature. Because of the extreme heat in the day | | time and the sudden cold at night, the earth's temperature changes very | | quickly. When this happens, the earth's surface, in the desert, actually | | changes its shape and form. Those areas that have already been rutted | | by the rain run-off will become deeper because of the changes in tempera- | | ture. This an the use of the roads in that condition will maintain the | | ruts, but a good set of gabriel striders will handle that in almost any | | vehicle. She is called the | | Eagle Woman by the Hopi Indians. The Hopis say she was an Oraibi | | widow of Bow Clan who lived in the late 1800s. The story goes, she | | became deeply depressed over the years, and that depression became | | unbearable. She left her family and traveled up the trail to the | | place of meditation. She rested, and meditated. When the moon rose, | | it is said, she felt it beckoning her and she answered it by leaping | | from the cliffs. When her body was found, and it took some time for | | her family to find her, it was left where it was and covered with rocks. | | This is the normal custom of the Hopis in the event of suicide or | | accidental death. The Hopis believe the canyon will always be lighted | | by the spirit of the Eagle Woman. It is their belief that there is | | always a light in the place where someone died. | | The area we are discussing is the Hopi-Navajo Reservation, Arizona. | | Science believes the light is actually caused by the phosphorescent | | vapors that rise from the coal deposits in the Black Mesa.
