QuikMenu Help (C) 1990 by OSCS
Upon installation, QuikMenu will create menu buttons for most, if not all,
the programs on your hard drive. Software titles that this program does
not recognize at installation, or that are added after the menu has been
installed, can be included simply by using the ADD command button.
QuikMenu was designed to make using your computer system as easy as
possible. The program will work with either a mouse or the keyboard,
will run in any standard graphics resolution, and will operate on most
networks that use DOS commands.
QuikMenu allows for up to ten menu pages. Each page may have a unique
menu layout. The page number is shown in the top right corner of the
menu screen. The page up and page down keys will allow you to flip
through the pages. The "Home" key takes you to page 1, and the "End"
key takes you to page 10. You may also create page buttons using the
ADD command.
The series of command buttons displayed across the top of the menu are
for customizing your menu. To activate a command button, either click the
button with a mouse or hold down the Alt key and press the underlined
letter of the command button you want. To get help press the F1 function
key. To exit press the Escape key. The following is a description of the
command buttons:
Info: Shows release date and your registration number.
DOS: Allows you to temporarily leave the menu to perform DOS
operations.
Add: Used to add a software or page button to the menu screen.
Once ADD is chosen, a screen will pop up with two choices:
Software Button or Page Button. To create a Software Button
you can just press Enter, or hold down the Alt key and press
S, or click the Software Button option with a mouse. To create a
Page Button hold down the Alt key and press P or click the Page
Button option with a mouse.
If you choose to create a Page Button a screen will pop up with
the following series of blanks to fill in:
Speed Key: Choose the letter or number on the keyboard that
you want to use to activate this page button. A letter, or single
digit number, may only be used once on a page.
Name: Type the name you want to appear on the menu button.
The name should describe the new page; ie. GAMES
Link to which page number: Choose the page, 1 through 10, that
you want to go to when you select the button.
If you choose to create a Software Button a screen will pop up
with the following series of blanks to fill in:
Speed Key: Choose the letter or number on the keyboard that
you want to use to activate this menu item. A letter, or single
digit number, may only be used once on a page.
Name: Type the name you want to appear on the menu button.
(Usually the name of a program; ie. WORDPERFECT.)
Location: Type the drive and directory in which the program is
located. For example C:\WP51 would be the drive (C:) and the
directory (\WP51) that the program WordPerfect is in. If you
don't know where the program is located, you can use the list
files button [F5] to find it.
Command: Type the command that runs the program. For example
the command to run WordPerfect is WP.
Pause[]: After running a program or DOS command, the pause
option tells the computer to wait for a key to be pressed before
returning to QuikMenu.
[F9] OPTIONS: Allows you to determine how the menu button will
look. You can change the text color, border color, and fill color.
You can also choose from four different letter shapes (fonts):
Modern, Roman, Swiss, and Gothic.
[F5] LIST FILES: Is used to find a program by listing drives,
directories, and programs on your system. When you choose
LIST FILES a scroll window will display the drives and
directories on your system. You can use the down or up arrow
keys to scroll through the directories one at a time, or use the
page up or page down keys to jump a screen at a time. If you
have a mouse you can click the or buttons to scroll one line
at a time or the and to jump one screen at a time. Once
you find the directory where your program is located, press
enter or click the directory name with the mouse. The programs
inside that directory will then be listed, scroll to the one you
want and press enter or click the mouse button. You will then
be returned to the ADD or EDIT screen with the Location: and
Command: fields completed.
FOR ADVANCED USERS:
You can prompt for a run time parameter in the command line, so
that when you select the button you will be prompted for a
parameter. This is done by placing the prompt in square
brackets after the program command. For example, to create a
button that allowed you to format a disk in any drive, you would
type "Format [Which Drive ?]" in the command line (do not
include the quote marks). When you select the button, a window
will open and ask "Which Drive ?". You can also put parameters
after a prompt. For example, you could type
"CHKDSK [Drive ?] /F". This is a very powerful option, but if
used to often it can make the menu harder to use.
There is also an option you can use on the command line for
viewing ASCII text files. The command is @VIEW="file name",
where "file name" is the name of the ASCII text file and it's
extension (do not include quote marks). For example, if you
wanted to view the autoexec.bat file using a program button, you
would type the command @VIEW=autoexec.bat in the command line
of the program button.
Move: Allows you to move an existing button to another location on the
menu screen. You may also move a button to another page by
pressing the Page up or Page down keys after selecting a button
to move. The accuracy of the move option can be increased by
holding down the shift key while using the cursor keys.
Size: Allows you to resize a menu button. Use either the mouse or
cursor keys to change the size of the button. Buttons cannot be
made smaller than the text inside them. The accuracy of the size
option can be increased by holding down the shift key while
using the cursor keys.
Edit: The edit lets you change any item about a menu button. You can
change what letter activates it, what name will appear on the
button, where the program is located, and even which program
the button activates. (See Add:)
Delete: Allows you to remove a menu button from the menu screen.
NOTE: Any changes made to the menu using the ADD, MOVE, SIZE,
EDIT, or DELETE command buttons will not be saved until you
either hit the function key F10, run an application, exit to DOS,
or the screen saver activates.
Setup: Is used for customizing the function and appearance of your
menu. SETUP allows you to choose the background color for the
entire menu, choose mouse speed, turn sound effects on or off,
turn confirmation on or off, and set how long it waits for a key
press or mouse movement before activating the screen saver.
SETUP also has a password option. When you choose the
password option you will be given the following options:
Password: Enter up to 12 letters of your choice. If you choose
to use the password option DO NOT FORGET YOUR PASSWORD.
[] Require password to Exit QuikMenu: If you select this option,
the next time you Exit QuikMenu you will be asked for your
password.
[] Require password to use DOS shell: If you select this option,
the next time you choose the DOS command button you will
asked for your password.
[] Require password to Edit menu: If you select this option,
the next time you try to ADD, EDIT, MOVE, SIZE, or DELETE
a button you will be asked for your password.
[] Require password to Activate programs: If you select this
option, the next time you try to run a program from the
menu you will be asked for your password.
Clock: Used for setting the time and date display. This option may not
work on some XT's
Exit: Leaves the menu environment completely.
