Using the VIREX-PC Virus Detection Demonstration Program
--------------------------------------------------------
This special demonstration version of Virex-PC will scan your files for the
presence of over 100 known PC viruses. This version can remove an infected
file from your hard disk. It cannot disinfect a file, although the complete
version of the Virex-PC software can for most infections. Contact your
dealer for information on the complete Virex-PC package. Use the following
procedure to examine your files:
Scanning
--------
1. It is best to boot from a clean system floppy before using VIRXDEMO.
2. Be certain that the floppy disk which contains the Virex-PC demo
is WRITE-PROTECTED!
3. Insert the demo disk into a floppy drive and make it the default
drive by typing "<drive letter>:" and pressing the RETURN key.
4. To scan a specific file, type "VIRXDEMO <drive>:<path\filename.ext>"
where VIRXDEMO <drive>:<path\filename.ext> indicates the drive,
directory path, and the name of the file to be scanned. Press the
RETURN key.
5. To scan a directory and its subdirectories, specify <drive>:<path> in
place of <drive>:<path\filename.ext> in the above procedure.
6. To scan a disk, specify <drive>: in place of <drive>:
<path\filename.ext> in the above procedure.
You may scan only one drive, set of directories, or file at a time.
The VIRXDEMO will report the results of the scan on your screen.
Options
-------
There are four optional switches available for use with VIRXDEMO.
They are used on the command line in the following format:
VIRXDEMO <drive>:<path\filename.ext> -<options>
Note that the switches can be used individually or in combination.
-M indicates that VIRXDEMO will search to see if the system memory of
the computer contains virus code.
-L indicates that a "long scan" will be used. The default mode for
VIRXDEMO is to look in the most common location for viral infection.
Occasionally, multiple infections will cause the viral code to appear
elsewhere in a file. In this case, the long scan will locate all
infections. You should use the long scan the first time that you use
VIRXDEMO.
-A indicates that all files will be examined. VIRXDEMO normally examines
.EXE, .COM, and certain other files that are the usual targets of viruses.
The -A switch tells VIRXDEMO to examine all types of files, including
data files.
-O indicates that only the named directory and not its subdirectories
will be scanned. For example, "VIRXDEMO C:\ -O" would mean that only the
root directory and not its subdirectories will be examined.
