  1. Association of Shareware Professionals Approved BBS Standards as of 01/01/91.

  3. 1.0.  Introduction
  4.  
  5. This document sets forth standards for an Electronic Bulletin Board System
  6. (BBS) to receive and maintain an "Approved" status from the Association of
  7. Shareware Professionals (ASP).
  8.  
  9. 2.0.  Receiving and Maintaining ASP Approved Status
  10.  
  11. In order for a BBS to receive and maintain ASP Approved status, the following
  12. standards must be met:
  13.  
  14. 2.1.  The BBS operator (SYSOP) must fill out an application form stating
  15. his/her willingness to abide by ASP standards set forth in the document and
  16. applying for Associate membership in the ASP.
  17.  
  18. 2.2.  The SYSOP must allow for initial and follow-up access to the BBS for
  19. the purpose of verifying compliance with ASP standards. The SYSOP will
  20. provide a specific access name and password on the application for use by an
  21. ASP inspector.  This will be used only for official ASP business and will be
  22. kept strictly confidential by the ASP. This "user" must have normal access
  23. given to BBS users or subscibers.  It must allow access to all functions and
  24. download libraries that contain shareware. Access to special message,
  25. software support, and areas reserved for private purposes is not required.
  26.  
  27. 2.3.  The SYSOP will be given a warning if he/she fails to meet one or more
  28. of the standards.  If the problem is not rectified in a reasonable time, the
  29. ASP Approved status and Associate membership will be withdrawn.
  30.  
  31. 2.4.  If ASP membership ceases for any reason, the BBS must cease using the
  32. ASP name and trademarked logo in any way.  Other benefits of membership
  33. will also cease.
  34.  
  35. 2.5.  The principals of the BBS are held to the decisions of the ASP
  36. Ombudsman and are required to cooperate with the Ombudsman when
  37. approached by him/her.
  38.  
  39. 2.5.1 Background on the Ombudsman:
  40.  
  41. The Ombudsman's sole role is to mediate disputes between all ASP members
  42. (Authors and associate members alike) and their customers.  The
  43. Ombudsman reports to the board situations where he feels board action or
  44. knowlege is appropriate.
  45.  
  46. 3.0.  Shareware Information on the BBS.
  47.  
  48. 3.1.  The BBS must maintain bulletins or other informative banners readable
  49. by all who access the BBS that explain what shareware is and who the ASP is.
  50. Files of the suggested ASCII text of these bulletins will be sent to
  51. approved BBSs when they are notified of their approval.
  52.  
  53. 3.2.  The file listings of the BBS must have a short identification of ASP
  54. member programs.  The notation "<ASP>" is recommended at the end of the
  55. program description  although other methods might be equally suitable.
  56.  
  57. 4.0.  Other Requirements.
  58.  
  59. 4.1.  The use of the terms "FREE SOFTWARE" and the like must not be used in
  60. conjuction with any shareware products.
  61.  
  62. 4.2.  An ASP Approved BBS must not knowingly post for downloading software
  63. that is illegal for distribution in this manner.  Any such software must be
  64. immediately removed when found.  This includes retail-only products as well
  65. as any other copyrighted material (including shareware) that is restricted
  66. from distribution by the author or copyright owner.
  67.  
  68. 4.3.  SYSOPs will not change or delete ANY files supplied with the program
  69. unless specifically authorized in the author's documentation or with the
  70. author's prior authorization.  Archiving files for downloading is
  71. encouraged.  All files supplied by the author must be contained in the
  72. archive(s).
  73.  
  74. 4.4.  The BBS will cease distributing out-of-date versions of ASP member
  75. programs if requested by the author.  ASP authors are encouraged to put this
  76. and other specific requests in a file BBS.DOC or VENDOR.DOC as part of the
  77. author's software package.
  78.  
  79. 5.0.  BBS Approval process.
  80.  
  81. 5.1.  Upon submission of the application form, an assignee of the ASP will
  82. log onto the BBS to certify compliance with the standards set forth in
  83. sections 3 and 4 above.  If any deficiencies are found, the SYSOP will be
  84. notified and a second check may follow after appropriate fixes are made.  A
  85. recommendation will be made to the ASP board for approval or disapproval and
  86. the SYSOP will be notified of the results.
  87.  
  88. 5.2.  Appeal of these results may be made by the SYSOP directly to the board
  89. of the ASP.
  90.  
  91. 6.0.  Benefits of being an ASP Approved BBS
  92.  
  93. A BBS which receives "ASP Approved" status will receive the following
  94. benefits:
  95.  
  96. 6.1.  ASP members will be encouraged to send updated disks or uploads to
  97. approved BBSs.  The mailing list of Approved BBSs will be made available to
  98. all ASP member authors.
  99.  
  100. 6.2.  Approved BBSs may use "ASP Approved BBS", "Approved BBS of the
  101. Association of Shareware Professionals", or the ASP Approved BBS logo.
  102.  
  103. 6.3.  Approved BBSs will regularly receive a list of the current version
  104. numbers of ASP member's programs.  This will be available free from the ASP
  105. sections on Compuserve (normal Compuserve costs will apply) or for an
  106. annual fee of $30/year a monthly update on disk will be mailed.
  107.  
  108. 6.4.  Approved BBSs will receive the printed ASP Newsletter, "ASPects".
  109.  
  110. 6.5.  Approved BBSs will also benefit by ASP publicity in which readers will
  111. be told to look for ASP Approved BBSs.
  112.  
  113. 6.6.  Approved BBSs will be Associate members in the ASP. This is a
  114. non-voting member status.
  115.  
  116. 6.7.  Approved BBSs will benefit from the public relations aspects of the
  117. institution of Ombudsman.
  118.  
  119. 6.8.  Approved BBSs will be listed in a register of ASP Approved BBSs
  120. distributed to members and other interested parties.
  121.  
  122. 7.0.  A special category of ASP Author BBS allows ASP Author members to
  123. post the "ASP Approved BBS" wording or logo on support BBSs.  The
  124. benefits described in points 6.1, 6.3, 6.4, and 6.8 above will not
  125. apply.  There is no charge for this category of member.

  202. Chair, posts on CIS, etc. This database should also be formatted similar to
  203. Darwin's for posting on BBSs.

  205. Note that the inspector must be quite lenient about the notation of ASP
  206. member's programs in the initial review since the Sysop will not necessarily
  207. know who is an ASP member. A follow-up call 6-months later can be tougher.
  208.  
  209. Note that all members of the BBS Membership committe as well as others
  210. recruited by the BBS Membership chair can serve as inspectors.  It would
  211. be appropriate to allocate a payment of $10 per application to these
  212. inspectors.
  213.  
  214. Bulletins for posting ASP information for the public.
  215.  
  216. It is suggested that you make the following information available to
  217. your callers via a standard public bulletin such as the (B)ulletin
  218. command on Wildcat or PC Board systems.
  219.  
  220.     Much of the software available for downloading from this BBS is
  221.     shareware. These systems require a payment to the author if found
  222.     useful.
  223.  
  224.     Some shareware systems are produced by members of the Association of
  225.     Shareware Professionals (ASP).  The authors of these systems have
  226.     promised to meet the association's standard of program quality and
  227.     customer support.
  228.  
  229.     ASP wants to make sure that the shareware principle works for you.  If
  230.     you are unable to resolve a shareware related problem with an ASP member
  231.     by contacting the member directly, ASP may be able to help.  The ASP
  232.     Ombudsman can help you resolve a dispute or problem with an ASP member,
  233.     but does not provide technical support for members' products.  Please
