  9.   The DDN SECURITY BULLETIN is distributed by the DDN SCC (Security
  10.   Coordination Center) under DISA contract as a means of communicating
  11.   information on network and host security exposures, fixes, and concerns
  12.   to security and management personnel at DDN facilities.  Back issues may
  13.   be obtained via FTP (or Kermit) from NIC.DDN.MIL [192.112.36.5]
  14.   using login="anonymous" and password="guest".  The bulletin pathname is
  15.   scc/ddn-security-yynn (where "yy" is the year the bulletin is issued
  16.   and "nn" is a bulletin number, e.g. scc/ddn-security-9426.)

  19.                           Virus Alert: "MONKEY"
  20.  
  21. 1. A new DOS computer virus has reached Europe. The virus is called "Monkey."
  22. It is a serious virus which is passed from computer to computer by infected
  23. disks. It cannot travel by file trnsfers or e-mail. The virus has already
  24. been found in the Graffenwohr training area.
  25.  
  26. 2. Once the virus infects a computer, the hard drive will infect other
  27. diskettes, and over time the hard drive will become unusable, resulting
  28. in total loss of data on the hard disk.
  29.  
  30. 3. The following steps are the precautions you must take to protect your
  31. system:
  32.  
  33.      (A) Ensure that you have virus checking software that knows about
  34.          the Monkey virus.
  35.  
  36.      (B) Check every diskette you use. If it hasn't been checked by you,
  37.          it hasn't been checked.
  38.  
  39.      (C) If you detect the monkey virus, stop. Secure that diskette and
  40.          all other diskettes that came with it.
  41.  
  42.      (D) Don't attempt to clean out the virus yourself. This virus is
  43.          very difficult to clean.
  44.  
  45.      (E) Contact your local LAN administrator, Computer Systems Security
  46.          Officer (CSSO), or base computer security office immediately.
