  9. Current Working Group Activities

  11. The USERDOC2 Working Group has completed two FYI RFC efforts since the
  12. last IETF. The new FYIs are:
  13.

  15.    o FYI 19:  ``Introducing the Internet--A Short Bibliography of
  16.      Introductory Internetworking Readings for the Network Novice'' by
  17.      Ellen Hoffman and Lenore Jackson.
  18.  
  19.    o FYI 20:  ``What is the Internet?''  by Ed Krol and Ellen Hoffman.

  22. The on-line files associated with FYI 19 are archived in ``Introducing
  23. the Internet,'' along with newer materials that are of interest to
  24. beginning users.  These archives can be accessed by e-mail, FTP, Gopher,
  25. and WAIS, as well as dial-up for those lacking Internet connectivity.
  26. Four sites currently maintain copies of the archive, and volunteers were
  27. requested for other sites willing to duplicate the files.  For
  28. additional information on the archive, send an e-mail message to
  29. nis-info@merit.edu with the text, ``send access.guide'' in the body of
  30. the message.

  33. Open Forum on Documentation Activities
  34.  
  35. The discussion began with a presentation by Bert Stals.  He described
  36. the work of the User Documentation Task Force, a sub-group of the RARE
  37. Information Services and User Support Working Group (ISUS). Their goal
  38. is to produce documentation for end users on an introductory and
  39. intermediate level, without duplicating other efforts such as User-Doc.
  40. Their first project is a set of one-pagers, each on a separate
  41. applications topic (gopher, e-mail, WAIS, WWW, archie, file transfer,
  42. Mailbase).  Bert noted user support staff could use the text in their
  43. own documentation series (using their own house-style).  Alternatively,
  44. simple formatted versions of the pamphlet will be available for those
  45. who wish to use them directly in several formats, including ASCII text
  46. and WordPerfect files.  The working group maintains a mailing list for
  47. those interested.

  60. Bert also described a cooperative project with EARN to update the first
  61. edition of EARN's ``Guide to Network Resource Tools.''
  62.  
  63. Ellen Hoffman asked for comments regarding whether the IETF should get
  64. documentation translated into other languages.  The discussion raised
  65. several points, including concerns that introductory rather than
  66. technical information was the area most in need of translation as most
  67. technical people understand English.  David Sitman (EARNInfo Officer)
  68. said that in his experience people were unwilling to translate documents
  69. but were more comfortable creating their own.  He also suggested that
  70. documentation written in the US tended to be chatty which made it more
  71. difficult for non-native English speakers.  Issues were also raised
  72. about when documentation is effective and the amount of effort required
  73. to produce it.  Jill Foster noted that there are various levels of
  74. documentation, and that each has its own requirements.

  77. On-Going Projects

  79. The next project is a revision of RFC 1175, the long bibliography.  The
  80. goal is to have a fairly complete draft by the next IETF. A revised
  81. charter will be posted (currently the file where the charter should be
  82. is empty---a situation the chairs will work on correcting after the
  83. meeting).  Ellen noted that she would like to include non-English
  84. introductory texts in the bibliography.  Suggestions for materials to
  85. include should be sent to her.
