  18. The agenda was augmented with a presentation from John Klensin, one of
  19. the Area Directors for the Applications Area.  John discussed the IESG's
  20. views on the environment option controversy.
  21.  
  22. This shifted the primary focus of the meeting to the environment option.
  23. In Columbus, the group had proposed to re-issue RFC 1408 with the VAR
  24. and VALUE definitions corrected to match the BSD implementation.
  25. Additionally, a document was produced that explained heuristics that
  26. could be used to handle implementations that did not agree.
  27.  
  28. Upon further reflection it was decided that since the heuristics were
  29. not 100% deterministic that it would be better to re-issue RFC 1408
  30. using a different option value.  In this way, two systems implementing
  31. the new option could determine that heuristics were not needed.  Most
  32. working group members felt that in the long run this would be cleaner.
  33. There is a further advantage in that an earlier change requested by the
  34. IESG (USERVAR) means that systems using the current option values and
  35. the BSD definitions don't work with implementations deployed prior to
  36. the introduction of USERVAR.

  38. This issue will be re-discussed on the mailing list in order to reach
  39. the widest possible audience.

  41. The group briefly discussed the proposed revisions to the charter.  The
  42. general consensus is that we don't want to remain as a clearing-house
  43. for TELNET documents.  The charter will be revised to only cover the
  44. authentication work that is going on.

  46. The group reviewed a proposal for a ``TELNET Transfer of Control''
  47. option.  The group feels that there are some security issues with the
  48. document.  Various people will forward their comments directly to the
  49. author.  At this time the group does not wish to formally work on this
  50. specification.

  52. Finally, the group briefly discussed Dave Borman's new option that
  53. merged authentication and encryption.  The initial feedback is
  54.

  61. favorable, but the group is waiting to see the results of an initial
  62. implementation using Kerberos IV.
