- IPng Requirements BOF (NGREQS)
-
- Reported by Jon Crowcroft/University College London
-
- The IPNG Requirements BOF met on the morning of 31 March 1994. The goal
- of the meeting was to review the ``Technical Criteria for Choosing
- IP:The Next Generation (IPng)'' Internet-Draft
- (draft-kastenholz-ipng-criteria-01.txt).
-
- The meeting was broken into two parts, short presentations by several
- experts in particular technologies, followed by a general discussion.
-
- The technical presentation part of the discussion lasted for about one
- hour. Several people gave brief, three minute, presentations on the
- requirements that their own particular technology had on IPng. This was
- very similar to the White Paper process used by the IPng Directorate,
- though much less formal. A brief open discussion also followed each
- presentation.
-
-
- Network-layer Security
-
-
- Mike St. Johns gave a brief presentation on network-layer security. He
- described the functions that would be needed in order to properly secure
- the network layer. Among them: privacy and authentication of packets,
- key distribution, and access and resource control.
-
- In the open discussion, the group expressed its sentiments that security
- must be present in IPng and that the requirements should be worded as
- strongly as possible.
-
-
- Mobility
-
-
- Greg Minshall gave a talk about mobility. Several points that he
- brought out were that firewalls are bad for mobility, the control
- protocol (ICMPng) should have large data fields, separate addresses and
- end endpoint identifiers are highly desirable, and that router discovery
- is necessary.
-
- In the ensuing open discussion two points were brought up:
-
-
- o There is a need for larger data areas in ICMPv4 error messages for
- transition and coexistence.
-
- o The group wants both mobility and portability in IPng.
-
-
- Network Services
-
- Dave Clark gave a talk about network services. His points included that
- IPng be able to efficiently map packets into services, that there be
- security for this class mapping scheme, and that highly sophisticated
- routing be available that can do things like select providers, route
- according to desired services, and so on.
-
-
- AVT and MMUSIC Work
-
- Mark Handley gave a brief talk about the AVT and MMUSIC work. He
- indicated that for these areas, low delay and high reliability in the
- network were to be particularly favored. Also, he said that larger MTUs
- and smaller headers were desirable.
-
-
- RSVP
-
- Lixia Zhang talked about RSVP. RSVP's particular concerns were that the
- routes be stable and that endpoints be notified if routes change, that
- the routing be able to route based on QOS information, and that a
- network user must be able to prove that the network is providing the
- desired service level.
-
-
- IPng
-
- Peter Ford gave a brief talk on IPng from the perspective of a network
- operator. The important points that he brought out were that one must
- be able to do provider selection, and that the network operators must be
- able to control the routing within their networks in order to do things
- like load-shedding and balancing, switching to backup routes, and the
- like.
-
- John Curran gave a talk indicating that IPng must give end users a
- strong incentive to migrate to IPng and leave IPv4. Simply being able
- to deal with larger networks (i.e., larger address spaces) would not be
- sufficient.
-
-
- General Discussion
-
- The group then had a general, open discussion. Additional points were
- raised and discussed.
-
-
- o Convergence. Several members of the group expressed a desire that
- IPng provide for convergence for all protocol families (e.g., OSI,
- NetWare, XNS, and so on). Some felt that this was just plain
- silly, some felt that this was useful but not a technical
- requirement, and others felt that it was a technical requirement.
- This discussion continued for some time, with no real resolution.
-
- o The group expressed a desire to have a larger minimum packet size.
-
- o Address assignment must be delegated as far down the administrative
- hierarchy as possible.
-
- o Automatic configuration must not preclude manual configuration.
-
- o It was pointed out that the automatic configuration requirements
- apply only to the internet-layer (analogous to getting the IP
- address and network mask in today's IP). Higher layer configuration
- issues (e.g., registering with the DNS) are important, but are
- explicitly not addressed in the document.
-
- o A general discussion of architectural issues was held. This
- discussion was cut off by lack of time.
