  11.   The DDN MANAGEMENT BULLETIN is distributed online by the DDN Network
  12.   Information Center under DISA contract as a means of communicating
  13.   official policy, procedures and other information of concern to
  14.   management personnel at DDN facilities.  Back issues may be read
  15.   through the TACNEWS server ("@n" command at the TAC) or may be
  16.   obtained by FTP (or Kermit) from the NIC.DDN.MIL host [192.112.36.5]

  22.           Updated Transition to T/20 Internet Routing Servers
  23.  
  24.    This DDN Management Bulletin supersedes DDN Management Bulletin 130,
  25.    Updated Transition to T/20 Internet Routing Servers, dated 29 Jul 93.

  27.    This DDN Management Bulletin provides updated information for DDN
  28.    MILNET Hosts to DISN/DDN Internet Protocol Router (IPR) and T/20
  29.    assignments.  Currently, 107 DDN MILNET PSN Nodes have been reassigned
  30.    due to the addition of the El Segundo DDN IPR, 26.31.0.65. DDN MILNET
  31.    Hosts (NOT GATEWAYS) should start using these new IPR assignments
  32.    effective upon receipt of this DDN Management Bulletin, but no later
  33.    than 5 Jan 94.

  35.    Subject: Updated Transition to T/20 Internet Routing Servers
  36.  
  37.    IMPORTANT - PLEASE READ - Switchover to New DDN Routing Servers and New
  38.    Gateway Assignments for Subscribers.
  39.  
  40.    1. This bulletin provides the default gateway assignments for MILNET
  41.    hosts and the routing server assignments for MILNET subscriber gateways.
  42.    It also provides, in paragraph 4, telephone numbers for assistance in
  43.    configuring user gateways for CONUS and OCONUS users. Request MILNET
  44.    subscriber gateways and hosts switch to the new assignments listed in
  45.    this bulletin NO LATER THAN 5 JANUARY 1994.
  46.  
  47.    2. At this time, the default gateways are CISCO Internet Protocol
  48.    Routers (IPRs) on the DISN-NT Pilot Network, which provide the
  49.    store-and-forward function between MILNET and the civilian INTERNET.
  50.    The routing server T/20s on the MILNET provide dynamic routing infor-
  51.    mation to subscriber gateways. The following information is provided to
  52.    explain the responsibilities of subscriber gateway administrators in
  53.    this transition:
  54.  
  55.    a. Section 8 gives the assignment, by PSN, of the two T/20s that
  56.    subscriber gateways should peer with to obtain dynamic routing
  57.    information. The Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) remains the recommended
  58.    protocol and subscribers should maintain the goal of converting to
  59.    BGP (RE: DDN Management Bulletin 9302). The T/20s will continue to
  60.    provide EGP services to those subscribers that are not ready to switch
  61.    to BGP. To achieve optimal routing for traffic to/from the Internet, it
  62.    is important for subscriber gateways to prefer routes from their
  63.    primary routing server over their secondary routing server. This
  64.    capability exists on most routers. Specifically, it is possible to
  65.    prefer routes from one EGP/BGP neighbor over another EGP/BGP neighbor
  66.    in both CISCO routers and devices using the gateD router software. If
  67.    you require assistance configuring your router to accomplish this
  68.    preference, please contact the technical representative given in
  69.    paragraph 4.
  70.  
  71.    b. Users who want to test their capability to use BGP should contact the
  72.    technical representative to perform a brief test prior to a permanent
  73.    change to BGP.
  74.  
  75.    c. Section 6 gives the assignment, by PSN, of the CISCO IPR's that
  76.    MILNET subscriber hosts (not gateways) should use for default routing
  77.    of Internet traffic. This section also applies to subscriber gateways
  78.    which are incapable of using or choose not to use the dynamic default
  79.    route provided by the Internet routing servers.
  80.  
  81.    d. Section 7 provides the mapping between the names and the IP
  82.    addresses of the T/20 routing servers and the CISCO IPR's.
  83.  
  84.    3. These assignments are based on topological grounds to optimize
  85.    routing within the MILNET. Compliance to these assignments is critical
  86.    to ensure the maintenance of the proper level of services. Please keep
  87.    in mind that geographical distances do not necessarily correspond to
  88.    topological distances on the MILNET. The MILNET topology is changing as
  89.    as it downsizes. The assignments listed below will be reviewed
  90.    periodically to ensure that routing continues to be optimal. Although
  91.    efforts will be made to minimize change, significant topological changes
  92.    may require a revision to future assignments. These revisions will be
  93.    announced in future DDN Management Bulletins. BBN will evaluate the
  94.    topological changes on a quarterly basis. The next re-assignment of
  95.    routers and default gateways could occur as soon as January 1994. IF
  96.    NEW RE-ASSIGNMENT ACTIONS ARE REQUIRED DURING JANUARY 1994, A NEW DDN
  97.    MANAGEMENT BULLETIN WILL BE ISSUED. IT WILL SUPERSEDE THIS DDN MANAGE-
  98.    MENT BULLETIN TO KEEP ROUTING INFORMATION CURRENT FOR BOTH DDN MILNET
  99.    SUBSCRIBERS AND DDN NIC FILES.

  119.    5. The quarterly cluster assignment evaluation was based on MILNET
  120.    routing information and traffic statistics from October 1993. The
  121.    specific nodes within a cluster are determined by performing a
  122.    topological analysis of the MILNET and grouping nodes with IPRs to mini-
  123.    mize average topological distance (in hops) to reach an IPR, reduce con-
  124.    gestion and balance traffic loads directed to the IPR nodes. These
  125.    assignments include a new cluster, ELSEGUNDO, centered around the LA-IPR
  126.    (26.31.0.65). The following is the current list of clusters and their
  127.    corresponding IPRs:

  158.    6. PSN to IPR Assignment (Table 1)
  159.       =====================
  160.  
  161.    a. This table defines the cluster to which the PSN (and all PSN users)
  162.    belong. It designates a primary and secondary IPR for each MILNET PSN.
  163.    The primary IPR defines the cluster to which the PSN and its users
  164.    belong, and the secondary provides backup if access to the primary is
  165.    disrupted. Note that if users are forced to use the secondary IPR (e.g.
  166.    the primary is down), it can result in non-optimal routing, however it
  167.    does maintain general connectivity to all networks.
  168.  
  169.    b. This table is required by users to configure the static default
  170.    gateways in hosts. The primary IPR should be configured as the primary
  171.    default.
  172.  
  173.    7. T/20 Route Server to IPR Assignment  (Table 2)
  174.       ===================================
  175.  
  176.    a. This table assigns four route servers to each IPR (two per EGP
  177.    process). The IPR sets up a routing session (BGP or EGP) with the
  178.    route servers to obtain routes to the MILNET client networks.
  179.  
  180.    b. This table is used to configure the IPRs.

  182.    8. T/20 Route Server to PSN Assignment (Table 3)

  185.    a. This table lists a primary and secondary route server assigned to
  186.    each PSN.
  187.  
  188.    b. This table is required by users to configure the BGP or EGP routing
  189.    processes in MILNET client gateways. In most cases, both primary and
  190.    secondary route servers point to the same list of IPRs.
