USING MICROSOFT EXCEL WITH WINDOWS/386
If your computer is based on an Intel 80386 processor, you can use
Microsoft Excel with Windows/386, version 2.03 or higher. Windows/386
allows you to run applications that were not designed to run with
Windows side by side with applications designed for Windows, like
Microsoft Excel.
Also, if you run Microsoft Excel with Windows/386 version 2.03 or higher
you can take advantage your computer's memory to run several large Windows
applications at the same time and provide Microsoft Excel with more memory
for creating larger data files. For more information on Windows/386, see
"Hardware and system configuration" in the Microsoft Excel reference.
Installing Microsoft Excel with Windows/386:
For simplicity, it is recommended that you install Microsoft Excel
and Microsoft Windows/386 in the same directory.
-If you have already installed Windows/386 on the hard disk on which
you install Microsoft Excel, the Microsoft Excel setup program will
propose the Windows/386 directory for installing Microsoft Excel. To
have both programs share the same directory, you should accept the
proposed directory.
-If you have purchased both Microsoft Excel and Windows/386 at the same
time and are about to install them, install Windows/386 first and then
install Microsoft Excel in the same directory.
-If you have already installed Microsoft Excel and you later install
Windows/386, install it in the same directory in which you installed
Microsoft Excel.
NOTE: If you choose to install Microsoft Excel and Windows/386 in
separate directories, be sure to include both directories in
your PATH environment variable. See you DOS manual for
information on the PATH variable.
To start Excel and Windows/386 from DOS:
1. If necessary, change to the directory that contains Windows/386 and
Microsoft Excel. To change directories in DOS use the cd command.
2. Type WIN386 EXCEL then press Enter.
(You may also type EXCEL alone, but this will prevent you
from running applications that were not prepared for Windows
side by side with Microsoft Excel and will also prevent
Microsoft Excel from taking advantage of expanded memory
provided by Windows/386.)
IMPORTANT: Microsoft Excel was designed to operate under Windows
version 2.02 or higher (runtime, full Windows, or Windows/386).
Microsoft Excel will operate under Windows/386 version 2.01, but
its reliability will be significantly decreased. For best results,
run Microsoft Excel only under Microsoft Windows/386 version 2.02
or higher. If you have Microsoft Windows/386 version 2.01, you may
get an upgrade by calling Microsoft Customer Service at (206) 882-8088.
********************************************************************
UPDATING MICROSOFT EXCEL or WINDOWS
If you set up over an earlier version of Microsoft Excel or Windows,
the WIN.INI file which contains any custom information will be renamed
WIN.OLD. You may wish to copy this file to WIN.INI if you had
important information in your old WIN.INI file. Optionally, you may
want to use a text editor, like Notepad, to copy information from
WIN.OLD into your new WIN.INI file.
********************************************************************
NOTES ON SPECIAL HARDWARE
POSTSCRIPT and PCL PRINTERS. If you use a POSTSCRIPT or a PCL printer
and Windows/286 or Windows/386 2.1 you should update the printer driver
to the latest version which is included with Microsoft Excel. You can do
this by simply copying the appropriate printer driver to the Windows
directory on your hard disk.
PostScript Printers use the driver called PSCRIPT.DRV which is located
on the Microsoft Excel Fonts disk in the 1.2M configuration, and on the
Utilities 2 disk in both the 720kb configuration the 360kb configuration.
A PCL printer is a printer that uses the same Printer Control Language
as the HP LaserJet series of printers. These printers use the driver
called HPPCL.DRV which is located on the Microsoft Excel Utilities
disk in the 1.2M configuration, the Utilities 2 disk in the 720kb
configuration and on the Build 3 disk in the 360kb configuration.
To update the driver do the following:
1. Change drives/directories to the drive/directory you have
Windows/286 2.1 or Windows/386 2.1 installed in.
2. Insert the appropriate Microsoft Excel disk in drive A:
3. Use the appropriate COPY command at the at the DOS prompt. Either
type:
COPY A:PSCRIPT.DRV
or type
COPY A:HPPCL.DRV
and press the ENTER key.
NOTE: If you use a floppy drive other than A:, be sure to
substitute the correct drive letter in the command above.
MAYNARD HARD DISK. If you have a Maynard hard disk, it is
recommended that you use only version 2.4 or higher of the
hard-disk software. An early version of the Maynard hard-
disk software may contain an error that prevents it from
working correctly with Microsoft Excel.
POINTING DEVICES. If you have a Microsoft Bus Mouse, and
Microsoft Excel does not respond to mouse movements, you may
need to change the jumper on the Bus Mouse adapter.
Generally you should set the jumper to IRQ5 for the IBM PC
AT and IRQ2 for the IBM PC XT. For information on how to
change the jumper, see the Microsoft Mouse User's Guide.
TI PRINTERS. If you have a TI850 or 855 printer, set the
mode switch for draft-quality text when you use the printer
with Microsoft Excel. On the TI-855, you can only use the
default character set since this is the one supported by the
device driver. Font cartridges for the TI855 are not
supported.
When printing to a TI OmniLaser, you may experience problems
such as garbled output or messages such as "Can't write
to printer". These problems only occur when the printer
is connected directly to the computer via its parallel port.
Any one of the following work-arounds can be used to solve
the problem:
1. Use the printer's serial port instead of the
parallel port.
2. Click retry if the spooler gives you a message
that says it can't write to the printer port.
3. It is possible to cut the FAULT line (pin 32) on
the Centronics parallel cable. However, doing
so will disable printer error feedback to the
software. Also, this should be done at your
own risk by an experienced technician only.
Note: This problem does not affect printing when the
printer is connected to a network server.
********************************************************************
CORRECTING ENHANCED KEYBOARD PROBLEMS
Some computers that use enhanced (101 key) keyboards have ROMs which
do not fully initialize their keyboard. As a result, some of the key
sequences supported by Excel are not available on such computers
when they are first started.
To verify whether your computer correctly initializes the keyboard,
turn your computer on and observe the NumLock light on the keyboard.
If the NumLock light is turned on after you boot your computer has
correctly initialized the enhanced keyboard. If the Num Lock light is
not illuminated the keyboard wasn't initialized. Try pressing and
releasing one of the shift keys. If this still does not turn on the
light, your ROMs do not support the enhanced keyboard. However, you
can still get Microsoft Excel to recognize enhanced keys.
To get Microsoft Excel to recognize unsupported keys:
1. Copy the file SETENHKB.COM from the Utilities 1 Disk into the
root directory of your hard disk. You can do this by
inserting the Utilities 1 Disk in your floppy disk drive then
typing the following instructions at the DOS prompt. Terminate
each instruction by pressing the ENTER key.
c:
cd \
copy a:SETENHKB.COM
In the first instruction, type a different letter if your
hard disk is not drive c:. In the last instruction, type a
different letter if your floppy drive is not drive a:.
2. With a text editor or word processor, include the following
line in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file:
SETENHKB
After you re-boot, Microsoft Excel will recognize the
enhanced keys on your keyboard. To verify this, open a new
sheet, hold down shift and press the right arrow key in the
t-shaped keypad of your enhanced keyboard. You should have
extended the selection so that it encompasses cells A1 and
B1. If you only moved the active cell from cell A1 to B1 the
keyboard is not fully operational.

USING FONTS DESIGNED FOR MICROSOFT WINDOWS 1.0
If you own Windows 1.0 you may have certain fonts that you
would like to use with Microsoft Excel. Font files designed for
Windows 1.0 will not work directly with Windows 2.0. However,
using the NEWFON.EXE utility located on the Microsoft Excel
Fonts 1 Disk and your old font files, you may create new font
files which will work with Microsoft Excel.
To make a new font file from an old one, follow these steps:
1. Change directories to the disk drive and directory in which
the old font file(s) is located.
2. Create a second, backup copy of the old font file(s). You
may do this simply by typing the following and pressing the
ENTER key:
COPY *.FON *.BAK
3. Copy the NEWFON.EXE program to the directory your fonts are
in by following steps a and b below:
a. Insert the Microsoft Excel Fonts 1 disk in drive A:
b. Type the following then press the ENTER key:
COPY A:NEWFON.EXE
If you use a drive other than drive A:, then substitute
the appropriate letter for "A" in the above command.
4. Start the Newfon program. The form of the Newfon command is
the following: (You must do this step for each font file to
be converted.)
NEWFON [old-font-filename]
For example, to create a new PageMaker font file, PMFONTE.FON,
you would type:
NEWFON PMFONTE.FON
NOTE: You may also specify a new font file name. The form of
the Newfon command for doing this is the following:
NEWFON [old-font-filename] [new-font-filename]
WARNING: You will lose the old font file if you do not make a backup
copy. Be certain to backup your old font files as described
in step 2 above.
********************************************************************
USING INTERNATIONAL VERSIONS OF WINDOWS
You can use this version of Microsoft Excel with versions
of Windows in other languages. Note however that if you do
so the command names in Microsoft Excel's control menu will
appear in the language of the version of Windows that you
use. Thus, the keyboard shortcuts for the commands in the
control menu may differ from those indicated in the
documentation. If this is the case, you will not be able to
run tutorial lessons that rely on the control menu,
including the lesson on the Microsoft Excel Help facility.
********************************************************************
OTHER NOTES ON MICROSOFT WINDOWS
The following items are notes of special interest concerning all
versions of Microsoft Windows; Windows/286, Windows/386 and run-time
Windows version 2.0 or higher.
USING RAMDRIVE.SYS: In general, SMARTDrive gives better overall
performance than RAMDrive. One exception is output performance for
frequently written files. Another is increasing performance on networks.
We recommend that you use SMARTDrive; However, if you choose to use
RAMDrive, a new version of RAMDrive is included with Microsoft Excel.
This version performs significantly better than older versions and
is the ONLY version that works with Microsoft Excel 2.1. RAMDRIVE.SYS
is located on the Microsoft Excel Utilities 1 disk.
If you wish to use RAMDRIVE.SYS in expanded memory, you must use the
version of RAMDRIVE.SYS which is included on the Microsoft Excel
Utilities 1 disk. This is the only version of RAMDRIVE.SYS which
works properly in expanded memory.
For detailed technical information on RAMDrive, see the document titled
"Getting the Most from Your Hardware with Microsoft Excel" which is
available directly from Microsoft, see the Bonus Kit order form in the
Microsoft Excel package.
THINGS TO AVOID
Deleting Fonts When More Than 40 Fonts Are Installed
----------------------------------------------------
If you want to delete a font when more than 40 fonts are installed,
you should use a text editor, like notepad, to modify the WIN.INI
file rather than Control Panel. Control Panel can only handle 40
fonts. In WIN.INI, locate the [fonts] header and delete the entire
line for the fonts you wish to delete.
Using the DOS APPEND or SHARE command during Setup
--------------------------------------------------
Do not use the DOS commands, APPEND or SHARE before running the
SETUP process. Doing so may confuse Setup and cause it to fail.
Having Multiple Versions of Windows on the Same Fixed Disk
----------------------------------------------------------
Windows 2.1 and other versions of Windows including run-time
Windows have many filenames in common. If you have multiple
versions of Windows on your computer, avoid problems by including
the path to only one version in your PATH environment variable.
See you DOS manual for information on the PATH variable.
