This READ.ME file contains any changes or additions to
Norton AntiVirus software and the User Manual that took
place after the documentation was printed. Please read
this information thoroughly and carefully.
Important: If you are using the automatic Install
program, see the note about this program in "Corrections
to the User Manual" later in the READ.ME file.
General
When Norton AntiVirus is executed, the program checks
itself to determine if it is infected with a virus. If
Norton AntiVirus is infected, this message is displayed:
Norton AntiVirus has been tampered with. It may be
infected with a virus. If Norton AntiVirus is infected,
turn off your computer. (Do not press Ctrl-Alt-Del to
reboot your computer; turn it off at the power switch.)
Retrieve an original, write-protected DOS disk and start
your computer from that disk. Then, start Virus Clinic
from your original Norton AntiVirus Program Disk and scan
your system for viruses.
Disk Killer (a boot sector infector virus) destroys
bootable 1.2Mb floppies, so they are not bootable. If one
of your 1.2Mb floppies is infected with Disk Killer and
you boot off this disk, Disk Killer is placed in memory.
To avoid this situation, scan all your floppies
immediately after installing Norton AntiVirus.
When the "Abort, Retry, Fail" is displayed when using
Norton AntiVirus, always select Fail rather than Abort or
Retry.
After having copied or executed an infected file, the
internal DOS buffers may still contain pieces of the virus
which causes Norton AntiVirus to display this message:
<Virus name> was found in memory. When the
DOS buffers get cleaned out (by executing another
application or by copying other files), Norton AntiVirus
will no longer report the virus in memory. These
messages are unavoidable because it is impossible to tell
if the memory image is indeed an active virus or just a
fragment left over from another operation.
If you have a file that is infected with multiple viruses,
Norton AntiVirus only states the last virus that infected
that file. When you repair such a file, we recommend:
1. Making a backup copy of the file in case the repairs
are not successful.
2. Scanning the file after the repairs to ensure that it
is virus free. If another virus is detected, repair the
file again, and then rescan.
New Command-Line Switches
Besides the command-line switches detailed in Appendix E
of the User Manual, the following have been added:
/SS Disables the special sound
/Ss Enables the special sound
/SO Disable alert box on monochrome screen
/So Enables alert box on monochrome screen
/SX Disable alert box on color screen
/Sx Enable alert box on color screen
/SC and /SM will send you into full-screen mode in Virus
Clinic. All other options return to DOS and not into Virus
Clinic. This lets you create .BAT files to disable
features you know conflict with other applications. You
can turn on those features back on when the application
terminates. For example, your file may look like this:
NAV /Ss /SX /SO
WIN
NAV /SS /Sx SO
At the command line, memory is only scanned when scanning
is requested; that is, memory is not scanned when turning
on the special sound.
Norton AntiVirus and Windows
Windows users set "Remove alert after _ seconds" to at
least 1 second.
When installing Norton AntiVirus for the first time when
running WINDOWS, be sure to leave the option Disable alert
box on while in Advanced mode. Auto-inoculate does not
auto-inoculate.SYS files. When WINDOWS is loaded for the
first time, alerts will pop up prompting you to inoculate
the WINDOWS drivers. If the alert is turned off, Norton
AntiVirus appears to cause a crash. The box really only
needs to be turned off if Norton AntiVirus is going to be
run from a small window.
Norton AntiVirus is not compatible with ScreenPeace, a
WINDOWS shareware screen saver.
In WINDOWS, if CGA video mode is chosen, snow checking
will occur and slows down screen refreshing. You should
always run in VGA mode to insure optimum screen
performance.
Virus Intercept
Virus Intercept will not work with the following programs:
SideKick, DesqView, and PC Kwik Screen Accelerator.
Virus Intercept will not protect your system while using
the DOS DISKCOPY command.
With QEMM, load Virus Intercept into memory first. Do not
load IPX.COM (Novell Network driver) into high memory
along with NET3.COM
The mouse cannot be used to select buttons in the Virus
Intercept alerts.
Virus Clinic
You can use Tab or the arrow keys to move between options
in the Configuration Options and Add virus definitions
screens.
If the infected file cannot be repaired for some reason,
the Repair button is dimmed in the Scan Results screen.
The Delete button in the Scan Results screen is dimmed if
there are no infected files or if no more infected files
exist.
A scan in memory for viruses is executed only the first
time you select a file, directory, or drive to scan after
loading Virus Clinic. (Please see the note about page A-2
under "Corrections to the User Manual" to learn how to
deal with a virus in memory.)
Corrections to the User Manual:
Page 2 Audit Trail. The audit trail keeps a permanent
record of all virus-related activity, including all Virus
Intercept alerts and your responses.
Page 11-Buttons
Buttons are used throughout Virus Clinic to perform an
action in a screen or a dialog box. For example, in the
Scan directory dialog box below the buttons are on the
right and are surrounded by square brackets ([]), such as
[Ok] or [Cancel].
Page 1-10 to 1-11. Steps 4 and 5 should read this way.
4. Install asks where you are copying the Norton AntiVirus
program files from. The source drive where the Norton
AntiVirus files are stored will be displayed in this
screen, such as A:\. Press Enter to select Continue.
5. Install asks where you want to copy the program files.
Install shows the destination drive and directory where
the files will be copied, such as C:\NAV. Press Enter to
continue.
Note: If you are upgrading your Norton AntiVirus program
files and Install finds existing program files, the
location of those files is shown on the Install screen.
Install checks the current destination drive and directory
for existing program files. If existing files are found,
you can choose Overwrite to replace those files, or Choose
Back Up Files to create a back up directory with these
files.

Move this sentence from the Tip "Delete the file in the
Scan Results screen before replacing it." to the Note on
page 3-8.
Page A-2
The last troubleshooting question on page A-2 should read:
When I scan a file, directory, or drive in Virus Clinic,
Virus Clinic detects a virus in memory and shows a message
alerting me of that virus. What should I do?
Virus Clinic checks memory for viruses when you perform
your first scan in this session with Virus Clinic. If a
virus is detected, Virus Clinic displays the name of the
virus. To rid your system of this virus, do the following.
1. Turn off your computer at the power switch.
2. Retrieve an uninfected DOS disk and boot your computer
from that disk.
3. After you boot up your computer, use your original
Norton AntiVirus program disk to start Virus Clinic.
4. Scan your system for viruses.
5. Delete or repair any infected files found during the
scan, so your system is virus free.
Error Messages
Unable to access this file.
The file you are trying to access is locked. This can
happen, for example, if the file is stored on a network.
Unable to read this file.
The file you are trying to scan has been damaged in some
way, or the disk may be damaged.
Unable to write to this file.
Virus Clinic cannot create the checksum file for some
reason. Check that the disk where the checksum file is
being saving is not full.
Unable to create this file.
Virus Clinic cannot create a file. This can happen in
several instances. For example, this message may appear
when Virus Clinic is creating a checksum file, or when you
try to save the Scan Results to a file.
Unable to delete this file
This message appears when a file is locked, for example,
when you are trying to repair a file in the Scan Results
screen. Check that the file you are trying to delete is
read only.
Unable to add this virus definition.
This message is displayed after a message that tells you
NAV_.SYS is locked.
Unable to continue.
Returning to DOS.
Cannot recover from an error that occurred. The program
will return to DOS. Try the procedure again.
Unable to set SIGINT, aborting.
This is an error from the compiler. After the message is
displayed, the program returns to DOS. You should replace
your copy of Virus Clinic with a copy from your original
Norton AntiVirus Program Disk.
Unable to write to the file "NAV_.SYS"
This message is displayed when you add a virus definition
or try to save the program defaults. Is the disk you are
trying to save the information to write-protected? Or are
you trying to save the file to a network drive, or if
NAV_.SYS is damaged.
Virus Clinic damaged! Please replace this file.
Somehow your copy of Virus Clinic, NAV.EXE, has been
damaged. Replace your current copy of the file from your
original Norton AntiVirus Program Disk.
Too many items in list box
Out of memory
The number of items you have in a list box has exceeded
the maximum allowed. For example, the Scan file list box
allows 1025 items in list box, and if you exceed this
number, this error message appears.
File not found.
The file you have specified, for example, in the Scan file
dialog box or at Load virus definitions, cannot be found.
Check the name of the file and the path you specified.
Directory not found
The directory you specified cannot be found. Please enter
another directory name or check the list box for the right
directory name. For example, when loading virus
definitions, you may need to specify the directory where
those definitions are stored. If Virus Clinic cannot
locate the directory you specify, this message is
displayed.
Virus definition is incorrect. Verify the definition was
entered correctly.
The virus definition you entered is to long or has an
error in the actual definition. Please check the
definition carefully, correct any errors, then save the
definition. .
Virus found in memory! Refer to "Troubleshooting" in the
manual for more information.
When Virus Clinic is loaded, it checks memory for viruses.
A virus was found in memory. You must immediately stop,
boot your computer from a write-protected DOS disk,
retrieve your original Norton AntiVirus Program Disk, and
scan with Virus Clinic from that disk.
Invalid file format.
The virus definitions file you are trying to read is an
invalid format. The definition fields in this file must be
delimited by commas. Check the definition's format.
The file "NAV_.SYS" is missing or is damaged.
Your Virus Intercept file, NAV_.SYS, has been damaged.
Replace this file with a copy from your original Norton
AntiVirus Program Disk.
Error occurred during repair.
During the Repair file or Repair all process, an error
occurred. Virus Clinic cannot repair this file; you must
replace this file with an original, uninfected copy.
This file contains a strain of <virus name>.
This message is displayed in the Scan Results list box
when an infected file is found. The message tells you the
virus that has infected your file.
This file has not been scanned. Access denied.
This is a network error. This file cannot accessed at this
time because it is open.
Sector contains a strain of <virus name>
Sector not scanned. An error occurred.
While scanning a disk, an error occurred, for example, the
drive door may be open. Virus Clinic cannot check for a
virus under these circumstances. Determine the problem and
correct it before scanning again.
Out of memory
This error occurs at many times while using Virus Clinic,
for example, when displaying a list box, during a scan, or
when a huge number of infected files appears in the Scan
Results list box. In the last case, you should limit the
number of drives you are scanning. If you have more than
100 infected files, stop the scan, restore the files from
a backup, repair some files, and then scan again.
