  1. Starting SimEarth
  2. -----------------

  4. To start SimEarth:
  5.  
  6. 1.    Run the install program to decompress the program file, set the 
  7. default directory, video and sound options.
  8.  
  9. 2.    Change to the drive that contains the directory where you installed
  10. SimEarth.
  11.  
  12. 3.    Change to the directory where you installed SimEarth.
  13.  
  14. 4.    Type Simearth and press the Enter key.
  15.  
  16. The program will then load and display the SimEarth title screen.  Press 
  17. the space bar or mouse button to clear the title screen and you will be 
  18. presented with a tutorial window. 
  19.  
  20. If your machine is capable of displaying more than one of the supported 
  21. video modes, SimEarth will allow you to switch to a different mode from 
  22. the command line.  You will first have to either run the install program 
  23. to copy the appropriate files for each video mode or you can copy all the 
  24. files from all the data disks to your SimEarth directory.  Remember if you 
  25. run the install program, the default settings will be set to whatever was 
  26. selected the last time you ran the install program.

  28. Once the you have installed all the video modes, you may use the following 
  29. command line switches to override the default options:

  31. Switch    Graphic mode
  32. /dV    Sets VGA 16 colors 640x480
  33. /dE    Sets EGA 16 colors 640x480
  34. /de    Sets EGA 16 colors 320x200
  35. /d2    Sets MCGA 256 colors 320x200
  36. /dT    Sets Tandy 16 colors 320x200
  37. /dM    Sets EGA mono 640x350
  38. /dm    Sets VGA mono 640x480
  39. /dH    Sets Hercules 720x348

  41. Switch    Sound board
  42. /sa    Adlib
  43. /sb    Soundblaster
  44. /sc    Covox
  45. /si    IBM internal
  46. /st    Tandy

  48. For example, to run SimEarth in the EGA lores mode with Adlib sound type:

  52. and press the Enter key.

  55. Ghost Mouse
  56. -----------

  58. If you run SimEarth using Microsoft's mouse driver version 7.00 in VGA or 
  59. EGA Hires modes, Ghost cursor images may appear on your screen.  To correct
  60. this problem you may either run SimEarth using the /B command line option 
  61. or order the latest mouse driver from Microsoft.  The /B command line option
  62. may slow down the simulation speed.

  65. Querying in the compressed edit window
  66. -------------------------------------

  68. Because the compressed edit window only displays every other tile, when 
  69. you do a query on a tile it may not display all the information.  If you 
  70. would like to see all the information, turn off the compress edit window 
  71. option.
