  8. The following discussion describes new features of Searchlight BBS
  9. which may not have been included in your printed user manual.
  10.  
  11.  
  12. Installation
  13. ------------
  14. IMPORTANT PLEASE READ: Registration numbers are required for all 
  15. versions of SLBBS starting with version 1.74. We will provide you with 
  16. your registration number and password when you receive a new copy of 
  17. SLBBS or an update from us. To insert your registration number, just run 
  18. the provided REGISTER.EXE program one time before you begin.  
  19.  
  20. To replace an old version of SLBBS with a new one, you need to:
  21.   - Copy the new *.EXE and STRINGS.SYS files to your working drive;
  22.   - Execute the REGISTER program and input your registration number;
  23.   - Execute the CONFIG program once before restarting your BBS.
  24.  
  25. Please note that due to the larger size of the program files, the 
  26. arrangement of the files on the distribution disks may not be the same 
  27. as is stated in the manual (some files from disk #1 may be on disk #2). 
  28. Note also that you will have 2 disks only if you received the system on 
  29. 360K floppies; otherwise, all files will be on 1 disk.  
  30.  
  31. Files on your distribution disk that end with .SL are compressed text 
  32. files. To unpack these files, we include a utility called TUNPACK. Just 
  33. type TUNPACK followed by the name of the file to unpack.  
  34.  
  35. Your distribution disk contains several additional programs: SLSTAT, 
  36. TOPTEN, NEWFIX, STRINGS and SLPACK. The documentation for these programs 
  37. is provided in the corresponding *.DOC files. You will need PKUNZIP(tm) 
  38. or a compatible program to unpack the ZIP files.  
  39.  
  40. From time to time, people running multiuser systems have reported that 
  41. their system "slows down" or "takes several minutes to save messages", 
  42. etc. This can happen if a node or the system crashes while records are 
  43. locked. To solve the problem, just bring up the CONFIG menu and select 
  44. "Clear Record Locks".  
  45.  
  46. SPECIAL NOTE TO DOS 4.0 USERS: A DOS error occurs under DOS 4.0 during 
  47. certain operations if RELATIVE pathnames are used in the CONFIG setup 
  48. menus or in *.DEF files. This appears to be an error in DOS 4.0. To 
  49. prevent it, make sure all of your pathnames are absolute pathnames (ie.  
  50. beginning with a \ character or drive letter) and not relative paths.  
  51.  
  52. Additional support for Searchlight can be found on Wise Byte BBS at 
  53. (212) 962-1920. This is a PC-Pursuitable number in the NYNYO city code 
  54. for those with access to PCP. Ron Chibnik is the Sysop. Both Wise Byte 
  55. BBS and Searchlight Support BBS (516-724-0971) are now using high speed 
  56. US ROBOTICS 9600 HST modems.

  59. New Features
  60. ------------
  61.  
  62. Here are some of the new features of this version:
  63.  
  64. 1.76
  65. ----
  66. o Clock Tick Source - Version 1.76 adds a switch (located on CONFIG menu
  67.   #2, option 15) for configuring the method SLBBS will use to obtain a 
  68.   clock tick source (used by various routines for timing purposes). This
  69.   can be set to BIOS, DOS, or Direct. The default is BIOS.
  70.  
  71.      - Machines which run multitasking operating systems, complex TSR's
  72.        or other such software should probably use BIOS or DOS settings.
  73.   
  74.      - Some machines experience problems with the system date (date 
  75.        changes twice at midnight, or not at all) when using the BIOS 
  76.        setting. Try DOS or Direct instead.
  77.  
  78.      - Some machines cannot use the DOS setting (program will lock up or
  79.        pause for unusual amounts of time, lose keystrokes, etc). Use 
  80.        BIOS or Direct on these machines.
  81.  
  82.   On multinode systems, be sure to set the appropriate clock tick source
  83.   for each active node.
  84.  
  85. o Message Preview - The full screen editor features a Message Preview
  86.   option, available by pressing ^KP. Message preview can be used to 
  87.   display color codes and include files contained within a message in
  88.   the editor.
  89.  
  90. o Thread Command Submenu - The Thread command displays a new submenu
  91.   in place of the "Enter starting message number" prompt. The new 
  92.   menu displays these options:
  93.  
  94.        Read Thread:  Replies  Originals  Specific  Quit
  95.  
  96.   To read the thread starting from the first original message or from
  97.   the first reply, you need only select "Originals" or "Replies" from
  98.   the submenu. To start with a specific message, enter "Specific" and
  99.   then the desired message number. "Quit" cancels the thread.
  100.  
  101. o Adjustable Subboard Sizes - Message subboards can be configured with
  102.   a maximum size other than (but not greater than) the previous limit of
  103.   480 messages. When a smaller maximum size is selected, Searchlight
  104.   will limit the subboard to that number of messages. When the message
  105.   count is reached, Searchlight will either not allow new messages to
  106.   be added (if AutoPurge is turned off) or will delete the first 
  107.   nonprotected message to make room for a new message (when AutoPurge
  108.   is set to Yes). By default, all subboards are set to a maximum size
  109.   of 480 messages; use the 1-Subop command to make adjustments.
  110.     
  111.   SLMAIL version 1.35 (which will be released with Searchlight 1.76)
  112.   will recognise the maximum subboard size when importing echomail
  113.   messages. Please note that previous SLMAIL releases will not honor
  114.   maximum subboard sizes less than 480 messages.
  115.  
  116. o Files System Update - The Searchlight Files system has undergone a 
  117.   major upgrade and now provides for indirect file parameter passing to 
  118.   external protocols, batch download from multiple directories, two
  119.   way file transfers, and a more versatile filename/wildcard input
  120.   procedure. Please see the included FILES.DOC file for details.

  122. o Several bugs were corrected regarding Message Threading, Multiuser
  123.   chatting, system clock useage, and ZIPfile displays.

  128. o EchoMail Support - Searchlight now supports Echomail. The 1-Subop
  129.   command allows you to designate message areas as echomail areas and 
  130.   provides for inputting Fido node numbers. Importing and exporting 
  131.   of echomail is provided via the SLMAIL program. Please see the 
  132.   documentation accompanying SLMAIL for further information (if you
  133.   do not have a copy of the Echomail version of SLMAIL, it is available 
  134.   as a separate download at the support bbs; leave a message with the 
  135.   Sysop for downloading instructions).

  137. o Command Access Levels - A new CONFIG command, menu option #8, allows
  138.   you to configure minimum access levels for all commands found on the 
  139.   main menu and files system menu. Please see the included COMMAND.DOC 
  140.   file for additional information.
  141.  
  142. o Message Auto Delete - Searchlight can automatically delete old 
  143.   messages from a message subboard when the subboard becomes full. To
  144.   activate this option, set the Auto Delete option on the 1-Subop menu
  145.   for subboards where auto deletion is desired.
  146.  
  147. o LHARC Support - Searchlight's VIEW command can display the contents
  148.   of files created by the LHARC program. In addition, ZIP and ARC file
  149.   viewing has been streamlined; viewing of large ZIPfile comments and
  150.   self-extracting ZIPfiles is supported.
  151.  
  152. o Full Text Searches - The Scan/Search and Mail/Find commands can now
  153.   search the entire texts of messages for particular search keys instead
  154.   of just message titles and authors. After entering your search string,
  155.   you will be prompted as to whether you wish to search the message 
  156.   text. Searching can be aborted with ^C.
  157.  
  158. o Personal Message Search - A new command, Scan/Personal, can be used to 
  159.   scan public message areas for messages addressed to you (ie. replies 
  160.   to messages you have posted on that subboard).
  161.  
  162. o Com Ports - Additional base addresses are now available for COM3 and 
  163.   COM4. The newly added values correspond to the standard values used on
  164.   IBM PS/2 machines for COM3-COM8.
  165.  
  166. o Default Subject - Searchlight now provides a default subject for all
  167.   replies, both public and private.
  168.  
  169. o Door Menus - When using layered Doors menus (ie. one Doors menu which
  170.   calls up other menus), Searchlight will now return to the last active 
  171.   menu after executing a Door program (previously, it returned to the 
  172.   first menu).
  173.  
  174. o WHO Command - For consistency, a "Who" command appears on the main 
  175.   menu in both single and multiuser versions. For single user systems, 
  176.   the Who command displays the name of the current user and the status 
  177.   of the Sysop's availability (ALT-S) flag.  
  178.  
  179. o The Sysop-Next (ALT-N) feature has been improved to work when front
  180.   end programs are used with Searchlight.

  182. o A bug which caused small files (less than 1K) to be ignored during
  183.   batch uploading has been fixed.

  185. o A bug in the file transfer ratio calculations has been corrected.
