Ultima VI Character Editor Docs
-------------------------------
Typed up by Rescue Raider
Special thanks to Alan Flynn for supplying me with his U6 characters for
testing.
** WARNING! ** This editor will edit your stats and/or inventory. Don't
run this if you want to play without cheating.
To run the editor, you must place 'U6EDIT.EXE' and 'U6ITEMS.LST' on the
same sub-directory your saved game files are on.
PLEASE MAKE A BACKUP OF THE FILES 'OBJLIST' and 'OBJBLKCC' just in case!
Due to the complexity of the game's saved game format, the editor has
limited capabilities. You can't add or delete new players or items. It is
up to the user to input a new stat value. If the game doesn't work with it,
go back to the editor and change it to a new value.
The editor will only load in the first 100 items of a character's
inventory.
Acceptable range values for edits:
Level ranges from [1-8].
Str, dex, iq, magic pts, and hit pts range from [1-99].
Experience ranges from [1-9999].
Max # of a certain item [1-255] (icons with a number below it in the game)
Maximum strength (to print number correctly in the game) is 49!
STATS EDITING
- Use the cursor keys to move the "->" pointer to select a stat.
- Press 'return' and then input the new number (display on the
upper right window).
- Press 'ESC' to abort the edit and leave the stat as is.
- Type in a new # and press 'return' to edit the stat
- If the editor doesn't edit your stat correctly, your input was
out of range.
- The editor will not cure you of poison.
INVENTORY EDITING
- You can only exchange an item for another.
- You can't exchange equipped items. Those have an "*" at the left
of the name.
- You can't exchange carry bags, spellbooks, or spells.
- To get all possible spells in the game, place the cursor at your
spellbook in your inventory. Press 'return' and read the msg on
the upper right window.
- You increase the number of items (i.e. strands of spider silk), you
have to find it in the inventory list, and then press 'return'. You
will then see a list of items at the upper right window. Scroll the
window up or down until the item you want is highlighted in black.
Press 'return' and then input the # of items you want. The maximum is
255.
- You can exchange any item that doesn't have '-' or '*' on the left of
the name.
- Do not overload your character with too many items. This will hinder
him/her during combat. If you look at your inventory during the game,
the weight you are carrying should be less than twice your strength.
Other notes:
- To save, keep pressing 'ctrl-S' until the you see the "saving stats"
message. It saves the stats for only one edited character at a time.
- A highlighted window border is your current location in the editor. So
if the window border of your character's stats is light brown, that
is where you are. The rest of the windows are dark brown.
- Press 'ESC' at any time to either abort a selection or input or go back
to the main menu.
- The editor only works on one character at a time. For instance, you
edit Shamino and go back to the main menu and edit Iolo. You then
press 'ctrl-s' to save. Only Iolo's stats will be updated. Shamino
will still have his old stats before you edited.
This doc may seem unclear but once you fiddle around with the editor, you'll
get the hang of it. It's not that great, but it should help those that
are in dire need of something. Also included in the selection list are
the runes for each shrine. I advise you not to get them unless you
freed the shrine already and lost the rune somewhere. I haven't played
this game at all except for moving one room out of Lord British's throne
room. I can't say what's legal or not. I leave it up to you to select
the things you really want.
Happy adventuring! - Rescue Raider [PSI]
p.s. At least now you can concentrate more on the game's intricate puzzles
rather than begging for more gold and hit points.
Last minute revision
--------------------
In case you have an item that is not on U6ITEMS.LST, the item will appear
as 'unknown' in your inventory. When you want to exchange this, the editor
will prohibit you from doing so. There will also be a message telling you
the item number for it. Write that number down. Run the game and write down
all the items that character, who has the unknown item, has. Now, load up
U6ITEMS.LST using any text editor. Search for the occurence of all the
items you wrote down. If you can't find an item in the list, it's
probably the 'unknown' item (provided you only had one 'unknown' item.)
Now you can play 'create an item' by going to the end of the U6ITEMS.LST
file and append the new item.
The format is: Item name, item #, code.
Type the item name first, then the item # that you received from my
editor. As for code: 10 = ordinary item, 1 = group item (where the game
lets you have more than one of it like reagents), 11 = carrying bag or
something you can hold multiple items in. Use these numbers only. Once
done, save it and write it back to the 'savegame' directory. Run the
editor again and you'll see that you created a new item!
Note: Don't create items at random. The game will might screw up. Create
one if the editor doesn't recognize it and you have the item #. Sometimes
you might have more than one unknown item. So there is a chance that you
associated the new item with the wrong item #. Just go back and edit
U6ITEMS.LST until you get it right.
This was provided because I don't know all the possible and USABLE items
in the game. A lot of the items are for the game's graphics like floors,
trees, statues etc. You will also notice that you can't exchange an item
with an 'unknown' one. (Let's not get too carried away, ok?)
For additional help or problems, call Fungus Land, Roach Motel,
Cemetery Gates or Rocky Mountains.
