  2.                        INFORMATION REGARDING PCL PRINTERS

  5. You have selected one of the following printers:
  6.  
  7.    HP LaserJet              Epson GQ-3500             Tegra Genisis
  8.    HP LaserJet Plus         Kyocera F-1010 Laser      Wang LDP8
  9.    HP LaserJet 500+         NEC SilentWriter LC860    Olivetti PG 208 M2
  10.    HP LaserJet Series II    Okidata LaserLine 6       Olivetti LP 5000

  14. These printers are known as "PCL" printers.  Your PCL printer has
  15. been installed; however, it has not yet been configured properly.  To
  16. properly configure your PCL printer, use the Control Panel.  For more
  17. information on how to do this, see "Configuring Your System" in
  18. Chapter 7, "Using Control Panel", of the Microsoft Windows User's
  19. Guide.  Be sure to select the proper font cartridge for your printer;
  20. if you do not, your font options may be limited by some applications.
  21. Also, be sure to properly set up your communications port.

  25. Using Soft Fonts With Hewlett Packard Laser Printers:
  26.  
  27. The following describes how to use soft fonts with Hewlett
  28. Packard Laser Printers.  To use soft fonts, your printer must
  29. have the proper hardware.  The HP LaserJet will not support soft
  30. fonts.  The HP LaserJet+, HP LaserJet II, and HP LaserJet 2000
  31. all support soft fonts.  If you have a printer which emulates an
  32. HP Laser Printer and wish to use soft fonts, you should contact
  33. your printer dealer or manufacturer to determine if your printer
  34. supports soft fonts.  
  35.  
  36. Soft fonts that you copy onto your computer and download
  37. to your printer.  Many soft font installation programs, such as
  38. PCLPAK from Hewlett-Packard and Fontware from Bitstream, include
  39. installation programs of their own.  If you plan to use one of these
  40. installation programs, make sure that you install the font as Windows
  41. compatible fonts.  In general, three types of files can be included
  42. in a soft font package:
  43.  
  44.   - Printer Font File
  45.  
  46.     Printer fonts are what actually get installed on your printer.
  47.  
  48.   - Printer Font Metrics File (PFM)
  49.  
  50.     Printer font metrics are an optional file that are either
  51.     included by the soft font vendor or generated by Soft Font
  52.     installer that is part of the Windows PCL printer driver.
  53.  
  54.   - Screen Font File
  55.  
  56.     These are screen equivalents of your printer fonts.  They should
  57.     be installed using the "Add fonts..." command in the Windows
  58.     Control Panel.
  59.  
  60. You can download fonts to your printer two ways; as "Permanent" fonts
  61. or as "Temporary" fonts.  Permanent fonts are copied to your printer's
  62. memory before you print.  Consult your soft font manual for instructions
  63. on downloading "Permanent" fonts.  These fonts are kept in your printer's
  64. memory until you turn off the printer.  "Permanent" fonts print faster,
  65. but take up much more of your printer's memory than "Temporary" fonts.
  66. "Temporary" fonts are automatically downloaded to your printer as you
  67. print.  After your printing has finished, they are removed from your
  68. printer's memory.  This conserves on your printer's memory, but means
  69. that fonts will be downloaded every time you print.

  71. You can use the Soft Font Installer to add temporary or permanent fonts, 
  72. move fonts between printer ports, and remove fonts from your printer.
  73. To use the Soft Font Installer that is part of your PCL printer driver,
  74. bring up the printer specific dialog by selecting the "Printer..."
  75. command in the Windows Control Panel and choosing the PCL / HP LaserJet
  76. selection.  Clicking the "Fonts" button in the printer specific dialog will
  77. bring up the Soft Font Installer.

  79. If you want to install soft fonts on your system, insert the soft fonts
  80. disk in drive a:, bring up the printer specific dialog, click on the
  81. Fonts button, and then click on the "Add Fonts ..." button.  The installer
  82. copies the printer fonts and PFM files to your hard disk.  If there are
  83. no PFM files, the installer will create them for you.
  84.  
  85. If you want to move or copy the soft fonts to another PCL printer on
  86. another port, bring up the printer specific dialog, click the Fonts
  87. button, and then click the Copy button after selecting the fonts you
  88. want moved or copied.

  90. If you want to remove the soft fonts, bring up the printer specific 
  91. dialog, click the Fonts button, and then click the Remove button after 
  92. selecting the fonts you want removed.

  95. Steps for Installing Additional Font Cartridge Support:

  97. 1. To add new font cartridge support, you need to first obtain a 
  98. .PCM file for your cartridge from your font cartridge vendor.
  99.  
  100. 2. Run the Control Panel to set up the PCL / HP LaserJet printer.  
  101. From the printer dialog box, select the "Fonts" button to bring up 
  102. the Soft Font Installer.  Select "Add Fonts" and type in the drive/directory 
  103. containing the font cartridge PCM file.
  104.  
  105. You should now see the title of your cartridge in the add fonts 
  106. listbox.  There will be a "(c)" next to the name, indicating it is a 
  107. font cartridge (PCM).  Select this as you would a soft font, and select 
  108. "Add" (see instructions above for more on Soft Font Installation).  
  109. Once the cartridge is installed, select "Exit".

  111. 3. You should now be in the HPPCL main dialog box.  Scroll to the 
  112. end of the "Cartridges" listbox.  Your font cartridge will be listed 
  113. at the end.  Select your cartridge, and choose "OK".
  114.  
  115. You do not need to repeat the cartridge installation in step 2, unless 
  116. you remove it through the soft font installer.
