Above DISC READ.ME file
Changes since last manual publication 6/89, updated on 7-21-89:
Installing the Above DISC command in AUTOEXEC.BAT:
NOTE: If you have a drive change, a menu program, or a DOS SHELL
command in your "autoexec.bat" file, then you will
need to modify the "autoexec.bat" file to call Above DISC
before it executes this command or program.
Otherwise, Above DISC will not be installed in RAM.
The drive change or the DOS SHELL command may never get
to the ABOVE command in your "autoexec.bat" file. Your
autoexec.bat file should read:
CD\ABOVE
ABOVE
CD\
Users of Above DISC in 386 mode on 386 machines:
40K of extended memory will be used by 386 code and
cannot be used as EMS.
Users of Above DISC in 286 mode on 286 machines:
80K of extended memory will be used by 286 code and
and cannot be used as EMS.
If you are using 286 mode and specifying a memory segment
(option 5), the expanded memory location must be extended
memory not disk (option 4).
If you are using any type of DOS redirection such as having
the output of the DIR command sent to the printer or to a
file:
dir > prn or dir > filename
you must invoke Above DISC with the switch "O" (letter "O")
as follows: ABOVE /O.
Users of Above DISC in 386 mode on 386 machines or 286 mode on 286 machines:
Running the command "EMSTEST /M" from the Above DISC
subdirectory, will indicate which segments are avaialble.
If none are available, you must free up a segment in order
for Above DISC to use the minimum amount of conventional
memory.
ABOVE DISC with:
Adobe Illustrator is not compatible.
Allways 1.0, the version which uses EMS is not compatible with Above DISC.
However, there is an Allways patch availabe which does not use
EMS (non-EMM version) and which is compatible with Above DISC.
Clipper works well on 386 machines with Above DISC in 386 mode.
DisplayWrite 4 works well on 386 machines with Above DISC in 386 mode.
PC Tools 5.0, the PC Cache is not compatible.
Publisher's Paintbrush works well on 386 machines with Above DISC in 386 mode.
SuperCalc 5.0 revision B works well in with Above DISC version 3.0A.
Ventura Publisher 2.0 works well on 386 machines with Above DISC in 386 mode.
MS-Windows/286 on a 286 machine will not recognize or use the expanded
memory made available by Above DISC. Thus, the "About MS-DOS
utility" under Windows, will only display the amount of available
conventional memory but will not report any expanded memory.
HOWEVER, any Windows' application programs which use EMS such as
EXCEL, PAGEMAKER, DESIGNER will be able to recognize and use the
expanded memory.
On a 386 machine, MS-Windows/286, itself, will recognize and use
the expanded memory created by Above DISC.
For details on the use of SMARTDRIVE and HIMEM, refer to
the Above DISC User's Manual.
NOTE: If using HIMEM.SYS, make sure it is version 2.05 or
greater. If you have an older version, the Above DISC master
diskette comes with an internal debugged version of HIMEM.SYS
called HIMEMFXD.SYS which is fully compatible with Above DISC.
Other Notes:
Above DISC is not a DOS extender program and will not increase the amount
of conventional memory on your system. Above DISC is designed to provide
expanded memory (EMS) from extended memory or hard disk memory on your
machine.
There can be only one expanded memory manager resident on your system at
one time. Above DISC cannot be used in conjunction with any expanded memory
board unless that expanded memory board is configured as extended memory.
