Description
DOS Reader is a DOS/text based application for synthesizing text from
a file into speech.
Reading text
Before text can be read, a file must be opened. To open a file, select the
File\Open option from the main menu and use the file open dialog to load
the file you want to read.
There are two ways to read the text of the newly open file. The first is
to select the specific text you want to read and then press Enter or click
on the Read item in the status bar at the bottom of the screen. The second
method to read text is to position the cursor at a desired starting point
and press Enter or click on the Read item in the status bar at the bottom of
the screen. In this case, text will be read starting at the current cursor
position and continue until speech is stopped, or the end of the file is reached.
Selecting text
You can use the mouse or the keyboard to select text for reading. To select
text with the mouse, move the mouse to the starting position of the text you
want to select. Click and drag the mouse to the ending position of the text
you want to select. As you drag the mouse, the selected text becomes
highlighted. To use the keyboard to select text, use the edit keys to position
the cursor to the starting position of the text you want to highlight. Hold
down either shift key, and use the edit keys to mark the end of the text you
want to select. As you hold down the shift key, the selected text will become
highlighted.
Reading selected text
When you have selected text, press Enter or click on the read item in the
status bar at the bottom of the screen to start reading the selected
text. After all selected text has been readf or speech is aborted by
pressing Esc or clicking on the stop item in the status bar at to bottom of
the screen, the selected text will remain selected.
Free reading
When there is no selected text, simply press Enter or click on the read item
in the status bar at the bottom of the screen and text will be read starting
with the word at the current cursor location. The text will continue to be
read until the end of the file is reached, Esc is pressed, or the stop item in
the status bar at the bottom of the screen is clicked. As speech is read, the
cursor is advanced. This allows you to continue reading from the point where
speech was stopped.
